Just put in a HID kit into my flatmates r32.

When he puts on his high beams however, the normal low beams are intermittantly cut out. This is a problem as the HID don't like being turned on and off quickly.

Can anyone please tell me how to turn this off, so that when my mate puts on his high beams, the low beams stay on?

Thanks - any help greatly appreciated!

im not sure whether the lights normal use a relay to change between the lights, or whether its just done through the switch. so you may have to add or remove a relay. if its changed through the switch, which it sounds like, then all you have to do is put a relay in the 2 circuits so that when the high beam is turned on, the relay closes and keeps the low beam on aswell.

anyone feel free to correct me as im not quite sure.

cheers

Hmm interesting idea NZM but switching relayed circuits sounds like a bad idea, because it's still switiching it. I'd like to keep the HID life as long as possible by keeping the same circuit powering them.

Any other suggestions? :(

yep the HIDs on my 33 do this, low beams are the outer lights and high beam is the inner lights. i cant run both at once its either one or the other. ive found now that i have the HIDs i never use the high beams anymore.

What are HIDs? How much? Where?

Read my sig please ;)

Do a search, there was a thread on how to re-wire the lights to make them both come on! i was reading it not to long ago. Its possible to do it.. im sure of it.

Hey any chance you could post it or give me a title to search on please? I've had a look through all headlight searchable threads and none come up with the info I needed.

i understand what you are saying, that is just what we used to do when putting projector beams into 31s. there'd be a way to do it, what if you ran your lights off constant power, so whenever the car is running, the lights are on. thats one way to skin the drift cat.

cheers

The problem with running the lights on constant power is that when you start the engine the HID ballasts are sucking a lot of juice which would be fighting with your starter. Also you don't always want lights on.

I'm keen to see if anyone has any electrical ideas.

I can only think of 2 ways they could have done it.

1- When you hit high beams the power source is quite literally switched, which would probably be a relay that does it simply.

2- When you hit the high beams there is a relay that cuts the low beam current while the high beam current is turned on (on a seperate relay).

I'm really hoping it is the latter, this way I could just bypass the relay that cuts the low beam current.

If it's the former, then I'd have to bypass both relays and re-wire them so it works the way I'd like.

With either solution what I'd really like is someone who knows how to do this to outline just how the lights works and I could probably work it out from there. Obviously if someone knows how to do it straight out then I'd appreciate that input too :)

Thanks for the link man, I'm still looking for a way to disable the low beams being turned off, rather than having them turned on (after being turned off) when the high beams are applied.

I know it's only a slight difference but the reason I prefer it that way is because it's for HID and not normal globes.

    • Thanks for doing that Duncan! Makes you a good person in my books. We don't get kangaroos or wombats here. But we have bats and it's similar. AFAIK it's often the mums with a baby attached that get hit because they drop lower when starting from a tree. If you hit an animal, check on it. https://www.ifaw.org/au/resources/wildlife-rescue-app An app to get the closest wildlife rescue contact.
    • My dream is also to have a proper hoist, but I don't think it will ever happen. My quickjack is probably as close as I'll ever get, it really is very good though.
    • Yeah we keep on in the dailies, it is pretty poor how many animals get hit and the driver leaves without checking....have saved a couple of little ones over the years. Bit of a gruesome job though, pouches generally need to be cut open because they are so tight and often the joey doesn't realise mum is gone so they are still locked onto the teat. I checked the modules in front of the DS wheel where an oil cooler should go.... There is the radar unit - that can go for race use) One of the 2 HX water pumps, the silver cylinder. That needs to be kept but might be able to be relocated But the bad news, the big computer mounted vertically in front of the wheel (blocking any potential air exit) is the electric steering computer. That is required until/unless i do a hydraulic steering conversion, and in CAD based modern car design it is not like I can just pop a big unit like that somewhere else (plus the loom would be too short anywhere else too). So, the passenger side is OK to clear out (just use a smaller washer reservoir, potentially elsewhere), but the DS no beuno
    • Well, all the best with the new camry It was interesting to hear about the UK process, it is generally a lot more streamlined here with a shipping agent looking after all the import side (noting the exact final price can still be a surprise.....) and I've used a few different brokers on the japan (or US) side, and never had any trouble with any of them....luck of the draw I guess. You mentioned you didn't get the auction sheet (understandable since you bought it from a dealer, not auction), but I always try and get hold of that because they are pretty thorough. I've imported 2x R grade vehicles over the years and both were fine, repairs in Japan are pretty thorough compared to here in Oz.
    • BTW I measured the jack I have, it is 70mm at the saddle but you only have about 700 until it returns to 150mm high at the cylinder so it is good but no magic bullet.
