a mate suggested i take my car to one of those tyre/suspension places that lower your car to any height for like $150 (chopping the springs i assume)

any recomendations?

It's illegal, instant defect. That means call a tow truck to take your car home, you won't be allowed to drive it:cheers:

They actually re-form the springs by heating them while under compression.

save up and buy lowered springs so if you want to raise the car again you can....

also if you chop your current springs and if you get a defect sticker you will end up buying standard springs and with that total cost you could of had standard springs and new lowered springs....

When I was young and stupid at 18 and had a TE cortina I got lowered by getting the springs heated and then compressed. The springs started to sag after awhile and I ended up taking to the back springs with an angle grinder to make it lower and had to angle grind out the rear wheel arches with the same angle grinder to stop the rear wheels rubbing!!!! :crazy:

It made for a very bumpy ride for anyone in the rear as the shocks (monroe gt gas) were under constant compression with the height of the car. It was funny whenever the rear of the car was jacked up the rear springs would just pop out by themselves!

Chopped springs will make your car bounce on bumpy roads (aka, Sydney roads) and float like a butterfly (but won't sting like a bee) around corners.

Drove my cousin's Mirage with chopped springs and I was shitting myself driving at 60km/h.

Not worth the headaches.

you can just get lowered springs but not too extreme or the standard shocks will not be able to work properly but as long as its reasonable height (legal) then it should be ok... then you can move onto getting better shocks or go all out with a coilover... but for normal driving lowered springs should be enough...

when i was younger i got extremely low springs and the car looked damn nice but the ride was terrible and pretty much killed the standard shocks and had to get newer ones... so do things in moderation then you will save money in the long run....

the kings springs will fit straight in? will it make a height/ride difference with the standard shocks still in place?

yes.. the standard kings lows will drop the car about 3cm in height. Its probably not enough for the fullsik low look (which requires about 5-7cm), but if you want the car to handle (and also not chew tyres) that shouldn't be your primary concern.

    • This looks great! Awesome to have the 5 speed with an LSD in this. The Recaro's look like SR2's or SR3's. It's a shame they've been retrimmed as they would have looked sweet in their original colours. I think I'd want my agent to be a little more up front and informative too.     • Thanks for doing that Duncan! Makes you a good person in my books. We don't get kangaroos or wombats here. But we have bats and it's similar. AFAIK it's often the mums with a baby attached that get hit because they drop lower when starting from a tree.     • Yeah we keep on in the dailies, it is pretty poor how many animals get hit and the driver leaves without checking....have saved a couple of little ones over the years. Bit of a gruesome job though, pouches generally need to be cut open because they are so tight and often the joey doesn't realise mum is gone so they are still locked onto the teat. I checked the modules in front of the DS wheel where an oil cooler should go.... There is the radar unit - that can go for race use) One of the 2 HX water pumps, the silver cylinder. That needs to be kept but might be able to be relocated But the bad news, the big computer mounted vertically in front of the wheel (blocking any potential air exit) is the electric steering computer. That is required until/unless i do a hydraulic steering conversion, and in CAD based modern car design it is not like I can just pop a big unit like that somewhere else (plus the loom would be too short anywhere else too). So, the passenger side is OK to clear out (just use a smaller washer reservoir, potentially elsewhere), but the DS no beuno
    • Well, all the best with the new camry It was interesting to hear about the UK process, it is generally a lot more streamlined here with a shipping agent looking after all the import side (noting the exact final price can still be a surprise.....) and I've used a few different brokers on the japan (or US) side, and never had any trouble with any of them....luck of the draw I guess. You mentioned you didn't get the auction sheet (understandable since you bought it from a dealer, not auction), but I always try and get hold of that because they are pretty thorough. I've imported 2x R grade vehicles over the years and both were fine, repairs in Japan are pretty thorough compared to here in Oz.
