Hey Guys,

Been outta the loop for awhile cos the cars been off the road :D

Thinking about going the next step and getting some internal work done while my gearbox is rooted :(

Primarily thinking gavin woods because the main thing im looking for is QUALITY

Has anyone got engine internal work done at gavin woods?

Will be making the necessary phone calls etc once the money is there to be used but for the moment can anyone tell me if Gavin does the engine building themselves or contract to another place?

Also, who else can provide quality rebuilds including machining (ill be supplying most of the parts) in brisbane>?

Most likely looking to spend around 6k, something like;

Forgies + N1 rings, N1 bearings and reconditioned GTR conrods plus all the balancing and machining etc

To eventually mate with a 3037s @1.5bar + all supports :D

Any advise would be great, as im kinda throwing ideas around at the moment.

Cheers!

JHH for rebuild. At least talk to John at JHH, I dont have the number handy but it should be in the white pages. He is really quite good. But one thing LISTEN to him, do NOT say I am having this this and this. He knows what he is talking about. One case, the guy gave him cams, and well, dont do that when you have a 300zx, it costs a LOT of money to keep pulling the engine out, and putting it back.

But yeah, JHH for PM!

IF THIS IS ANY HELP TO YOU I AM CURRENTLY GETTING MY ENGINE REBUILT AT TOTAL PERFORMANCE BY ANDREW. IT IS IN LAWRENCE DRIVE, NERANG. SHARING A SHOP WITH DYNO SOURCE. ALL HE EVER DOES IS REBUILD ENGINES FOR SKYLINES. HE HAS DONE A COUPLE OF GEARBOXES FOR OUR FRIENDS AND THEY WERE REALLY HAPPY WITH HIM.

Ok thanks for the replies

Can anyone give me an estimate on the labour/machining/balancing costs?

I was thinking about $2000

anyone thats done this tune in and give me some info

Can the rb26 HKS 2.7L stroker kit be used on an rb25det block safely?

I think you need a keyboard rebuild...

knore, John at JHH did my RB26 & it has performed flawlessly. Unlike many other "engine builders" all he does is rebuilds & machines engines, he is not a tuning shop that sub-contracts the work & puts on a mark-up. Have a look at some potential workshop/s & JHH's & you will probably see one with a lot of specialist machining equipment & one without. He does a stack of RB engines & other Jap engines including Colin Wilshire's 8sec Datson ute etc who also speak highly of him.

I have had this recently done to my RB25

bore and hone 20thou

replace all welsh plugs

complete balance

fix some minor block issues

reclaim some of the crank

linish crank

acip dip and clean

assembly

HEAD

full clean

reface valves, new seats, pressure test, resurface

and someother shit ive forgotten off my invoice for $2509.32 hahahaha

that was through a workshop in Cairns so i'd assume you get better prices down south just to give u an indication

He also does the 'Jett racing' cars from memory. Few others. Daniel who is next door normally does a lot of the pulling out of the engines etc. Id recomend him highly for the 'mechanic' bit.

Ok thanks for the replies guys,

so nobody knows if gavin does the engine work himself?

ill havta make some phone calls but the only way im pouring money into this is if i trust the people 100% otherwise ill just put the new gearbox in my car, sell it and go for a GTR instead

1992-93 GTR are around low 20's landed ;) probably less stuffing around..

Yeah true that,

I was kinda under the guise of either turn current car into a monster or get a shitbox for awhile and save for something thats a big step up.

Still going to do some investigating, but might put new gbox in and front tyres just to see if the gtst will sell quickly, if so, guess its a pintara or magna to put around in for awhile :P

    • It was a great, but typical track day, and some VB was ingested at the night time debrief 🤪
    • And so, to round this out, I couldn't be happier to confirm @MBS206 has decided to buy the car. He drove down from sunny QLD with a trailer last week and it is off to its new home today. I'll let Matt confirm on next steps but I understand broadly that the plan is to leave it pretty much as is, and just get some quality wheel time with a nicely balanced car that is pretty much track ready. There are a few a jobs still to be done first but nothing too major and I think its a very smart buy Dinner last night at the Paragon with a round of VBs (mostly) for Neil
    • Well, 50 pages and the end of a chapter for this car. We took it out for a shakedown at Wakie yesterday, and everything went well. There were a couple of niggles: - Oil cooler fitting leak - tightened, cleaned, stopped leaking - Radiator cap overflow fitting was leaking....Mark called it, the overflow fitting was threaded in and not tight....tightened, tested and held pressure - Small oil leak at the rear of the block, probably the turbo oil feed - too hot to get at it comfortably but probably just needs to be nipped up - leak at the driver's side rear brake line where it meets the hardline. Fitting wasn't loose, so Matt backed it off and back on, no further leaks - there's also a leak somewhere on the top of the fuel tank, maybe that cross over fuel line - that was has been left to fix when its on a hoist Otherwise than those niggles the car went great, turned great and stopped great so it was a very successful day out. I'm always really nervous when a car first hits the track after a long break, especially with a brand new engine as well but it was great. VID-20251011-WA0007.mp4  Big thanks to @The Bogan who dropped by and helped out, @MBS206 and my nephew Lachlan the apprentice.  Neil's wife Mel also surprised the hell out of all of us by dropping by; she's up in Tamworth these days but was travelling to Melbourne so had plausible deniability for turning up at the garage, it was great to see her but also obviously a bit sad all round.
    • Skyline R33 Series 2 sedan tail lights in excellent condition. • Unsolicited advice? Keep the engine as close to stock as you can. Nothing wrong with adding some boost and making a little more power, but given where you are, you really don't want to try to make it into a monster. I can't imagine the roads are up to it, and the lack of locla support when it grenades will be a ball ache. FWIW, If there is a dyno around that you can access, then brand new injectors are a good idea, which will lead you to (at least) putting a Nistune in it, which will allow you to put an R35 AFM on it, all of which will make it possible to make it much much nicer to drive and live with.
