Hey guys, im new to this form.  I just got my 89 GTR last week, im from Canada.

My 4wd light come on here and there im not sure what the problem is.  Some times it stays off and sometimes it turns on when its on i only have rear wheels working.  Please help.

thanks

Normally on the GTR if one is driving at low speeds and turns the ignition on and off quickly it disengages the 4wd, the light comes on and you are in 2 wd, comming to a stop re engages.I would say that you have a electrical fault , something loose either in ignition or loom to your relay in the box on right inside gaurd in engine bay . Have alook any way , it,s a start .

Failing that down load in PDF the manual which will give you a schematic , which will help you trouble shoot .

Good luck.

I haven't seen the skyline wiring diagram, but with most new cars you can't really trace what operates the lights on the dash as they are usually controlled by a module that controls eleventy billion different other things.

On the GTR's what does the 4wd light indicate? that its engaged or that their is a fault?

If you have a mate with a diagnostic tool it *may* offer some insight to what could be giving problems.

Cheers

Matt

thanks alot guys.

I will check whatever i can, but i do have 2 other friends who have GTR's. Im in Ontario, Canada and there arent many GTR's here so getting help will be a little hard but i have to do my homework and reasearch whatever i can first. In the province of Ontario there are probably around 6 GTR's maybe little more or less. Its very RARE here to have a GTR we could only import cars that are 15 years or older. Anything newer is illegal.

Anyways guys thanks for your help i will check my car tomorrow and see if i still have that 4wd light comming on.

thanks

Fluid low

Low Voltage (alternator or battery problem)

Or just needs a bleed (2 points, 1 at the transfer case the other above the rear diff)

That covers 99% of the problems. The light indicates an error. The ATESSA unit in the boot has a light that will flash a number of times to indicate what it is, so if it is not one of those problems download the R32 workshop manual and check it out.

hey guys

alright so when i turn on the GTR the steering fluid in the trunk goes down to the MIN line so i added fluid when the car is on the the max line. Today i noticed the 4wd light turned back on. Would the 4wd light come on if i turn on the car and movie it right away?? Well thats what i did and i turned the car off and turned it back on and the light never came back on again. Ill get the lines bleeded when i take it to the shop tomorrow.

thanks for your help!

    • You very likely need to get it on a dyno and tune it. My assumption is, you've got an RB25DET tune in it, which has a different manifold, different injectors, and different cams as a minimum. What O2 sensor are you running?   When you say it runs extremely rich from idle all the way to redline, is this just free revving it you see that?
    • I seem to the be only person that is using a Haltech 2500 on an NA motor, I've installed a Bosch DBW throttle body to the OEM intake manifold and am having problems maintaining AFR even with the wideband o2.  It will run extremely rich at idle and up to redline, but under load it will go extremely lean in the 20s and i'm essentially having to rev it over 4k and feather the clutch to get it up to speed.  I've read a few other threads of about the butterfly, it seems removing the vacuum to it is supposed to have it remain open, i've noticed no difference under 4k with the vacuum line to it plugged.  I'm hoping someone here has had luck using the NA manifold with Haltech, and if they happen to have a tune for it.
    • I don't know any details, but I really wouldn't be surprised if they do it as a LHD only version, at least initially.
    • Thanks for the replies everyone. Definitely a coolant push. Oil catch can is empty and always has been. As the engine is out now I'll be having a good look over things. I do have some detonation on the piston tops from a trigger issue back about 5 years ago. I felt it and shut off then bought a new ecu and changed the trigger. Never been an issue since. It never hurt the power, its made almost 80hp more since that incident but I will pull the bearing caps to take a look. If the bearings are damaged I will do a bottom end refresh. Head is being re conditioned at the moment and the block will be cleaned and checked to ensure it's flat. I'll go with a kameari gasket and see how it ends up. The other thing I'm not super keen on is the cylinder colours. I suspect this is from the inlet manifold. The plan will be to put it back together, retune and then stick a plazmaman billet inlet on it and retune. I'm happy with the power, if it makes a little more, then great, but I would rather just make everything more efficient at this stage.
    • Maybe they'll look to do a bunch of presales to help inject some cash fast for their financial issues...
