I have booked my car into pedders for a set of lowered springs. They tested my shocks today to see if they also needed to be replaced, but they were fine.

Am I making the correct decision going for pedders springs? The guy at pedders said if I went for King springs they wouldn't be any different, but the King springs can pop out of where they sit if the car gets lifted off the ground. When he told me this I assumed the Pedders springs were the way to go?

How do you think these springs will change my handling?

I've had Pedders on my last two cars (TEIN on the current one) - Pedders are good, nothing wrong with the springs - But if you want your car to handle really well, go for the whole package - Like the Whiteline one....

my dad installed a all round whiteline setup on his r33 and i'd have to say i wasn't all that impressed!

after receiving the wrong shocks and haveing a HUGE mess around with payment we finaly got it all together and the 1st thing i noticed was how badly the springs fit the shocks. We had the custom whiteline springs with DMS adjustable oil shocks and the spring apeared to big for the hight adjustment rings, they over lapped quite a bit.

However we installed them on the car and took it for a drive, the handling was remarkably better but the shocks were extreamly noisy. The springs would creak and tinkle and it wasn't long till a very disturbing grunching noise started coming from one of the front shocks!

turns out its faulty so now we have to send it back! after the dramas we had getting them up here in the 1st place who knows how long that will take!

i'd have to admit though, having the height adjustment was pretty cool, and the feel of the car through corners when the shocks were on there hardest setting was awesome.

On my last car (R31), I had bought a set of lovells springs (they dont exist anymore), and they were great! The felt very stiff, and handled well considering I didnt upgrade shocks, swaybars, etc....

One of them broke eventually, so I had to get new ones... Since they weren't around anymore, I decided to get some king springs....

They were CRAP compared to the lovels! The car was bouncing around like crazy (with new shocks). They took a few months to sag, and became even worse! To say the least, my cars handling was better with the original springs....

Well, thats my experience with king springs. The springs they manufacture for R33's may be completely different, but I thought you might like some feedback from someone who has had a negative experience...

I'm getting the pedders springs installed at pedders. They quoted me around $650 for the installation of 4 lowered springs and full wheel alignment. I thought it was a little pricey but I want to get it done properly. Probably worth paying a little more.

When I first took my car in so they could show me what the ride height would be they completed a free check of my shocks to see if I needed new ones, I thought that was pretty cool.

If you check King Springs web site you wont find them but with the right account they are there :)

Mine were $550 fitted, 4 wheel alignment + Camber Adjustment.

i had some pedders springs on my car with stock shocks before changing to my current tein nr coilovers...

good springs, not too bumpy a ride.

whoever told you that about king springs is telling you bs, any spring if its too short (that is if you're going for a spastic reduction in height) or if you cut them is going to pop out when you jack the car up, otherwise there wouldnt be enough travel in the shock. but within reason, that should never happen, unless you lower your skyline 5 inches.

You're right... lowering the car does not make it handle better, cos it effects the roll centre. Honda for instance go to a lot of trouble to get their roll centre to optimum by making pivot points and contol arms relatively of equal lengths. Al you are doing by lowering your car is using 50-90mm of the suspension travel, consiquently your handling is moved in the range of movement.

As for the drop off or rattle, DMS and Tein have a "helper" or Anti-rattle spring that when the car is static, it is fully compressed. On over extension it is strong enough to keep a little pressur on the main spring and prevents "banging" and rattles....

When I got my car from Japan it had (still has) HA Tein shox and springs... Lowered to 320 hub centre to guard lip. Looked horn, but impractical for my requirments (Targa Tas).

So if its asthetics you want, just throw in the springs. If you want handling, like a race car.... buy a race car. or race car suspension

I got my pedders springs installed with the original shocks. Handles heaps better and feels a lot more stable on the road. I think the $628 I paid for the four lowered pedders springs was worth it. The car came down 1.5 inches and the standard springs that were taken out were in excellent condition.

Looks like I didn't need race car suspension to obtain better handling :D Oh and from an aesthetical sense it looks heaps better.

    • The rain is the best time to push to the edge of the grip limit. Water lubrication reduces the consumption of rubber without reducing the fun. I take pleasure in driving around the outside of numpties in Audis, WRXs, BRZs, etc, because they get all worried in the wet. They warm up faster than the engine oil does.
    • When they're dead cold, and in the wet, they're not very fun. RE003 are alright, they do harden very quickly and turn into literally $50 Pace tyres.
    • Yeah, I thought that Reedy's video was quite good because he compared old and new (as in, well used and quite new) AD09s, with what is generally considered to be the fast Yokohama in this category (ie, sporty road/track tyres) and a tyre that people might be able to use to extend the comparo out into the space of more expensive European tyres, being the Cup 2. No-one would ever agree that the Cup 2 is a poor tyre - many would suggest that it is close to the very top of the category. And, for them all to come out so close to each other, and for the cheaper tyre in the test to do so well against the others, in some cases being even faster, shows that (good, non-linglong) tyres are reaching a plateau in terms of how good they can get, and they're all sitting on that same plateau. Anyway, on the AD08R, AD09, RS4 that I've had on the car in recent years, I've never had a problem in the cold and wet. SA gets down to 0-10°C in winter. Not so often, but it was only 4°C when I got in the car this morning. Once the tyres are warm (ie, after about 2km), you can start to lay into them. I've never aquaplaned or suffered serious off-corner understeer or anything like that in the wet, that I would not have expected to happen with a more normal tyre. I had some RE003s, and they were shit in the dry, shit in the wet, shit everywhere. I would rate the RS4 and AD0x as being more trustworthy in the wet, once the rubber is warm. Bridgestone should be ashamed of the RE003.
    • This is why I gave the disclaimer about how I drive in the wet which I feel is pretty important. I have heard people think RS4's are horrible in the rain, but I have this feeling they must be driving (or attempting to drive) anywhere close to the grip limit. I legitimately drive at the speed limit/below speed the limit 100% of the time in the rain. More than happy to just commute along at 50kmh behind a train of cars in 5th gear etc. I do agree with you with regards to the temp and the 'quality' of the tyre Dose. Most UHP tyres aren't even up to temperature on the road anyway, even when going mad initial D canyon carving. It would be interesting to see a not-up-to-temp UHP tyre compared against a mere... normal...HP tyre at these temperatures. I don't think you're (or me in this case) is actually picking up grip with an RS4/AD09 on the road relative to something like a RE003 because the RS4/AD09 is not up to temp and the RE003 is closer to it's optimal operating window.
    • Either the bearing has been installed backwards OR the gearbox input shaft bearing is loosey goosey.   When in doubt, just put in a Samsonas in.
