My first was a 1.3L '93 Charade, used to cost me $20 for a full tank and took me to uni and back no problems. I used to think it was the bomb too yo, but in a good way hehe.

This was when petrol was 67 cents a litre. loved that car

Next car was Eunos 30X that was hella fun but I had constant power craving

Back to topic, if I wanted a first car now I'd kill for a teg VTiR

Yeah man go a charade!! he had the big bore model, mine was a '80 1.0L 3cyl  That was replaced by a '93 charade.

Seriously tho, i have much respect for those cars. Okay not the fastest, but absolutley bulletproof, reliable, and IMO look damn good for a hatchback of that era. Plus used to cost me NOTHING to run.

If i had that sort of cash back then i'd probably look at spending say 6K on the car, then saving the rest. THEN depending on what route i wanted to take.

If you're handy with a spanner try an old zed, s2/3 rx-7- sexy looks, classic car, decent resale, parts ok, goes and handles quite well.

I'd be more inclined to go for something a bit newer- agree that a telstar TX5/ mazda 626 is good, or an AE92 corolla/seca, N13 pulsar... they're all good cars.

Or do what i did for my third car - 91 MX83 Cressida. Rear wheel drive, 3.0L 142KW (same engine as N/A supra). Enjoy the luxury and comfort, excellent ergonomics and heaps of space, whilst having the abilty to still stick it to the VL/VN boys if required :D Just be prepared to change a headgasket or two if you're buying a cheapie one.

But yeah, if i'd had my skyline as a first car i WOULD have crashed it, end of story. May not have written it off or anything but definatley would have gotten myself in trouble. Not because i was a shit driver or a massive hoon, but just because i was inexperienced and couldn't read the road as well as i do now. Plus back then, i definatley wouldn't have been insured, so if/when i crashed, i probably would have been forced to sell off the wreck to cover costs and buy a $2000 runabout anyway...

My first car was an AE86, paid $5400 in 1995 for it, it ws nice back then, blew an engine a few years later put in a 4AGE, k-mac suspension, then it gradually went to shit over the next 4 years.

To think they finally appreciated right after I sold it. Bugger!

GREAT first car, but not for the current money. And try to find parts...ouch!

Currently got a RB30 R31 skyline, so cheap, so smooth and amazingly not that bad to drive.

my 1st car was Datto 200B. nothing flash, but transport.

my 1st "real" car was an R31 silhouette. it was good for learning the basics of certain driving techniques. like rear wheel drive, powerslides and LSD's. cause i can just see you getting a little excited on the throttle in the wet, coming on boost and spinning out or worse.....(i've seen it happen, not good). i'd rather crash a 31 than a 33, cause parts will be much cheaper for the 31. (not saying you will.)

but hey, its your money, you do what you like. i just thought i'd share my experiences ;)

    • It was a great, but typical track day, and some VB was ingested at the night time debrief 🤪
    • And so, to round this out, I couldn't be happier to confirm @MBS206 has decided to buy the car. He drove down from sunny QLD with a trailer last week and it is off to its new home today. I'll let Matt confirm on next steps but I understand broadly that the plan is to leave it pretty much as is, and just get some quality wheel time with a nicely balanced car that is pretty much track ready. There are a few a jobs still to be done first but nothing too major and I think its a very smart buy Dinner last night at the Paragon with a round of VBs (mostly) for Neil
    • Well, 50 pages and the end of a chapter for this car. We took it out for a shakedown at Wakie yesterday, and everything went well. There were a couple of niggles: - Oil cooler fitting leak - tightened, cleaned, stopped leaking - Radiator cap overflow fitting was leaking....Mark called it, the overflow fitting was threaded in and not tight....tightened, tested and held pressure - Small oil leak at the rear of the block, probably the turbo oil feed - too hot to get at it comfortably but probably just needs to be nipped up - leak at the driver's side rear brake line where it meets the hardline. Fitting wasn't loose, so Matt backed it off and back on, no further leaks - there's also a leak somewhere on the top of the fuel tank, maybe that cross over fuel line - that was has been left to fix when its on a hoist Otherwise than those niggles the car went great, turned great and stopped great so it was a very successful day out. I'm always really nervous when a car first hits the track after a long break, especially with a brand new engine as well but it was great. VID-20251011-WA0007.mp4  Big thanks to @The Bogan who dropped by and helped out, @MBS206 and my nephew Lachlan the apprentice.  Neil's wife Mel also surprised the hell out of all of us by dropping by; she's up in Tamworth these days but was travelling to Melbourne so had plausible deniability for turning up at the garage, it was great to see her but also obviously a bit sad all round.

    • Unsolicited advice? Keep the engine as close to stock as you can. Nothing wrong with adding some boost and making a little more power, but given where you are, you really don't want to try to make it into a monster. I can't imagine the roads are up to it, and the lack of locla support when it grenades will be a ball ache. FWIW, If there is a dyno around that you can access, then brand new injectors are a good idea, which will lead you to (at least) putting a Nistune in it, which will allow you to put an R35 AFM on it, all of which will make it possible to make it much much nicer to drive and live with.
