G'day all ,

Just wondering if people can suggest places to tap in the adapters for oil pressure and oil temp guages while retaining the std oil pressure solienoid.

also heard that the block has a strange tapered thread or something, is this true? and if so, where can i get an adapter for it.

running both guages from the same location, will need to get 2 adapters to get the 2 sensors into it.

also please note that oil cooler will be installed and would like the temp to be more towards exit temp instead of entry temp so i know how hot the oil is on its way to the cooler.

The RB20 uses a tapered BSP (1/4" I think) fitting for the std oil pressure sensor. RB25 is probably the same. BSP threads are very common in Aus, referred to as "gas threads" a lot of the time.

You can get various double adaptors that will screw into the port on the block which will give you a port for the std oil press sensor plus another to for the gauge sensor.

You will need to know what sort of thread the gauge sensor uses. Some use unusual threads like NPT (eg Autometer).

Any place that sells gauges should be able to help you out with this sort of gear.

I've never set up an oil temp gauge but it's common to use the sump plug as a gauge port. Another option is to modify your sump by welding on a port to suit. If you're using an oil cooler you might also be able to find a special fitting that will fit into your oil lines. You might have to do some of the research yourself on what tricky litle adaptors are available from Speedflow/Earls etc.

The pressure gauge should have come with an appropriate adapter. Otherwise go and see the people you bought it from for the right adapter.

The temp gauge should be installed after the cooler - there is no point in knowing how hot the oil is before it is cooled, you want to know how hot is is before it starts to lubricate stuff. I believe the usual placement for the sensor is to tap a hole through the sump drain plug.

yeah the guages are both autometer. yeah will look into getting an adapter to put in the lines for the oil cooler. dont like the idea of having to modify the sump.

autometer sell the double adpaters i think. just dont think they will bolt into the block. have to pull the existing guage send out and have a look at it and match the thread. any chance you could tell me where on the block the std guage sender is, its not mentioned in the engine workshop manual. cheers

Just grab a greddy oil filter adaptor from Greenline.

Made fitting up my gauges so much easier, and was only about $80 delivered.

i'll have to see if these will work with my remote filter kit.. cheers for the idea.

My thoughts are following the same line as a water temp guage... you monitor it on the way out of the motor, not on the way in. cos then you dont really know what temp it is after its passed through to motor.

I'm certain the thread will be BSP, just not sure what size. In fact all the tapered threads on the RB's appear to be BSP.

The Autometer gauge will be NPT.

The adaptor will look like the one in the middle:

The stock sender is located low on the drivers side of the engine, near the oil filter.

    • A few small updates since the previous post and lessons. I decided to do a little interior light upgrade on the 110. I quite like the iilumo items, even if they're a bit of a premium over other brands. You'll also note the Stedi Fogs, that will go into the S15 fog lights as I needed to match the bulbs since I got the new ones earlier. I hope they fit as the body is quite a bit longer than your normal bulb.  Annoyingly, I managed to trip the fuse, which normally wouldn't be an issue until I located the fuse. I can't say I've ever come across this. I had lucked out that someone nearby had a spare, but oddly enough Toyota dealerships seem to keep this in stock. I ordered some to keep in my stash and as luck would have it, someone else nearby tripped the same fuse so I passed on the favour.  I also did a little service on the 110 ahead of some additional work coming up. It's been annoying that Goleby's stopped carrying this particular HKS filter for the 110, so now I need to keep them on order from Japan. I also took the opportunity to install a bash plate and number plate riser. The plate riser is such a cheap but nice fix to help really tidy up the car. I'm tempted to now also replace my headlights, on this car. Both items were from Project Aero.    I also needed to replace the rear tyres on the 110, and after trying to get it aligned learnt that I need to replace some bushes in the front end, so that's next.  Closing out this update with a nicer picture as always!

    • Appreciate the correction on the "ground", that will make a huge difference to looking at this. That makes complete sense about AF70/AF71 which is what I had come down to being the issue, one of these. I'll have another look in the ignition wiring when I get a chance next week. I'll also make up a jumper wire for running that AF73 test.  ECU is fine, relay itself is fine, pump harness is fine and the pump itself is fine. I am going to upgrade the Walbro 255 anyway with a DW300 I have since I need to replace the fuel sender and I'm going to upgrade the FPR with my chasebays kit ready for new plenum/injectors/dbw, but I'll get this working first. That's why this is so frustrating.
