so hang on, is my suspension crap or the tyres? i thought theese were good tyres, at $400 each fitted they would bloody well wanna be good tyres. whats some good tyres

direzzas (dz101s) are decent tyres for the power u have, it will be your suspension that u should fix..

Try your suspension ($100 i surely doubt it) but honestly i don't think its going to fix your problem. You've got some decent power, enough to spin your wheels and hence why your asking the question. I have more power than you and stronger torque and i could wheelspin 2nd gear on the role everytime. It was fun but it was becoming a joke. Rear camber was checked and pineapples for squat fitted but didnt do enough. I even tried stock suspension to get some squat, but that didnt do enough either.

Fitted some R compound rubber and bingo, i can get traction in 1st. As i mentioned in another post, it now launches like a GTR. Ask Silva33, he's been in my car on launch and was outstanded.

Look you have Duncan who has arguably the 2nd fastest Production Skyline in the country telling you to have a good look at your suspension. You have me who does the suspension work on arguable the fastest Improved Production Skyline in the country telling you to have a good look at your suspension. And there are 2 or 3 other guys with lots of Skyline experience telling you the same. Compared to one guy who says tyres are everything and suspension does somewhere between nothing and very little.

Don't listen to any of us if you like, but please take it to Chris at Centreline and ask his opinion.

Im no amateur and have done my fair share of drag racing (not track racing).

Your call mate, believe SK who probably has never lived with an R33 as a daily driver and has experienced the frustration that you have. Or believe me, who has experienced your frustration but has fixed the problem. Your only as good as the rubber lets you.

You are correct, I have never lived with an R33GTST as a daily driver, however I do have an R34GTT with 265rwkw that has run an 11.9 at 120mph on radials that I drive almost every day. And once again you are right, I have never experienced the frustration that you have, maybe because I set up the suspension before I touched the engine.

If you want wheelspin frustration you should try the R32GTST with 420+rwkw, now that's a whole different ball game.

No, that's Ben's R34GTT, well ex-Ben anyway, he sold it after they tried the GT30 turbo upgrade. The guys at Whiteline used KYB shocks on his, mine has Eibach springs with Bilstein shocks, as I prefer them. I used MT ET radials on ours for the 11.9, couldn't drive with them on the street, absolutely useless around corners and dangerous in the wet. We have found them to be much better than the Nittos on the track though. On the road it runs my usual choice, Michelin Pilot Sport in 245/40/17 on the R33GTR 17X9's.

Yep, the 420+rwkw from the RB31DET in the R32GTST is quite nice, it has 245/45/17 A032R's on it. One day I might stick the MT's on it and try for a time, it should do a mid 9 at around 145mph. That's if I change the suspension settings from its current circuit spec. At the moment it would be lucky to do a 10, too much rear camber, anti squat geometery, bump valving in the shocks, toe in and the spring rate is a little high.

Just because I am a circuit racing specialist, doesn't mean I don't do drag cars.

So hows the Michelins in normal road use when you give it a bit of curry in 1st and 2nd??

Damn good, but after 30+ years of racing I have pretty good throttle control. Let's face it with 265 rwkw and power from 4,000 rpm to 8,000 rpm I hardly ever meet a car that I realy have to try to beat anyway, up to the speed limit of course. The roads in Sydney are never flat, so the suspension is very important in gaining the necessary traction via improved tyre contact with the road surface. Then there is always a corner, where the gap just grows expedentially.

Hi Guys,

Been a while since I posted in here but here's an update of where I am;

I have sorted out the Active-LSD problems (no more single spinner diff)

I have brought two new hankook 255x40x17's for the rear (35psi on all 4)

Today it's at Centreline getting the following done;

Camber Kit front and rear

Castor Kit front and rear

Pineapple Kit for the rear

4 Wheel align and balance

Can't wait to see how she handles after all this is done, will pick up at the end of the day. I think active LSD was a big let down for my car as it never worked, but works happy happy now that's been resovled and works all the time

if your car is launching like a GTR you should be pulling much better 60ft times that 2.03. i would think any numbnuts (namely me) can do a low 1.8sec 60ft in a car launching like a GTR (namely a GTR).

Your wrong , the 2.03 was done on Sumituno's street tyres not the RA-1. I haven't been to the track yet with the RA-1's but judging by road traction, they are 100% better than the Sumo's.

They are very similiar to the Re55, some guys who have had both reckon they are better, but anyway im not complaining at all, traction is simply brilliant. Guns running big horsepower should certainly look at their tyres to get some rubber down on the street.

I noticed a huge improvement with the pineapple kit... my car comes on boost hard with 18psi low in the rev range and stock suspension and very rarely get wheelspin since installing them alone..

Before the pineapples it used to spin 2nd like robo's every time and thats with semi slicks

i stand corrected on the short times thing. new tyres should make a good difference. I'm just not convinced that those RA-1s can perform as well on track as the RE55s or A048s or even RT215s which have vastly more contact patch.

The first tyre pictured is the RA1 and while not in the league of the re55 it will certainly produce better lap times than the RT215 . Toyo make the R888 to compete with the bridgy and it has has very good results , compared to the equivelent yoki AO48's at the recent historics( which it has been recently approved for ) round at PI.

well after all the suspension stuff is done i have to go back in 1000k's and have all the bolts and stuff checked. it seems to handle a stackload better, no more wishy washy handling when you bag it up at the rear. the axle tramp has been reduced but some is still present.

when u go sideways it seems to go the way u point the wheels instead of sliding and carrying on which is tops. the rev limiter seems to come up stacks quicker as its more interested in gripping than spinning now :) also on the freeway is tops, the car goes straight, doesnt wobble and carry on (steering wheel).

all in all very very happy but unfortunately suffered exhaut gasket failure on the same day so ill have to get that sorted. chris has suggested (spoke to him after a quick road test) that we try the "drag" suspension setup at the 1000k check but he said that normal suspension performance is hampered a little when in the drag launch setup, as its a comprimise. currently im on best all round performance.

Yeah, that's what i had though. as i have used the R881 (both GG and GGG compound), and R888 which are semi-slicks so i wasnt sure where the RA-1 was in the scheme of things. i thought maybe it was an R881 replacement, but it has street tyre looking tread so i was a bit confused.

    • I think the concept is highlighting the various scenarios where thicker oil helps, and thicker oil potentially doesn't help and only generates heat and costs power, in turn for safety which isn't actually any safer (unless you're going real hot). If anything this does highlight why throwing Castrol 10w-60 for your track days is always a solid, safe bet. 
    • Jason should have shown a real viscosity vs temp chart. All the grades have very little viscosity difference at full operating temperature.

    • Yep, if you are applying filler it sounds like there is something wrong with the body lol. Safe to assume there is going to be a lot of sanding going on if your still applying fillers.  Picture a perfect bare metal panel, smooth as glass. You lay down your primer, it's perfect. (why are you going to sand it?) You lay down the colour and clear, it's perfect. No sanding at all took place and you've got a perfectly finished panel.  You won't be chasing your tail, sounds like you were prepping to start laying filler. If your happy with the body after the sanding, there is some bare metal exposed and some areas with primer, no issues at all, start laying the filler. You are safe to lay filler on bare metal or primer (of course check your technical data sheet as usual for what your filler is happy to adhere to).  This isn't a 100% correct statement. There is primer that is happy to adhere to smooth bare metal. There are fillers that are happy to adhere to smooth bare metal. Just make sure you're using the right materials for the job.  Typically if you are using filler, you would go primer, colour and clear. I've never seen any instances before where someone has laid colour over body filler (maybe this happens, but I haven't seen it before). So your plan sounds pretty normal to me. 
    • I don't think there's any way someone is push starting this car.. I honestly can barely move it, and moving it and steering it is just flat out not possible. I'm sure it is, but needs a bigger man than me. I have a refurbished starter now. The starter man was quite clear and consise showing me how nothing inside a starter really should contribute to slow cranking, and turned out that for the most part... my starter was entirely fine. Still, some of the wear items were replaced and luckily it didn't show any signs of getting too hot, being unfit for use, etc. Which is 'good'. I also noticed the starter definitely sounded different, which is a bit odd considering nothing should have really changed there.... Removed and refit, and we'll pretend one of the manifold bolts didn't fully tighten up and is only "pretty" tight. GM only wants 18ft/lb anyway. I also found a way to properly get my analog wideband reading very slightly leaner than the serial wideband. There's Greg related reasons for this. The serial output is the absolute source of truth, but it is a total asshole to actually stay connected and needs a laptop. The analog input does not, and works with standalone datalogging. Previously the analog input read slightly richer, but if I am aiming at 12.7 I do not want one of the widebands to be saying 12.7 when the source of truth is 13.0. Now the source of truth will be 12.65 and the Analog Wideband will read 12.7. So when I tune to 12.7 it'll be ever so slightly safer. While messing with all of this and idling extensively I can confirm my car seems to restart better while hot now. I did add an old Skyline battery cable between the head and the body though, though now I really realise I should have chosen the frame. Maybe that's a future job. The internet would have you believe that this is caused by bad grounds. In finding out where my grounds actually were I found out the engine bay battery post actually goes to the engine, as well as a seperate one (from the post) to the body of the car. So now there's a third one making the Grounding Triangle which is now a thing. I also from extensive idling have this graph. I have not actually put the formula into HPTuners. I will have to re-engage brain and/or re-engage the people who wanted more data to magically do it for me. Tune should be good for the 30th!
