Hey!

I have a coolant leak on the passenger side of the engine.... well thats where the drip is under the car anyway...

Me and a mate originally thought it was that stupid 3inch hose on the drivers side (thats a bitch to get back on too!!) But after starting up...theres still a leak...

Thinking it may be the hose feeding coolant to cool the turbo... (or hoping, coz i don't want it to be the water pump!)

Has anyone else had a similar problem?

Understand its a pretty stupid question, as everyones car is different....but if theres a hose thats prone to go on the RB20DETS it may help me out.... (have only owned car for 3 weeks....its my first turbo too...)

if its time to change timing belt its not a big deal if its water pump.You can presurised water system by testing pump and have a look when engine is not running.I have engine in garage I can have a look what is on passenger side anyway.Give me some idea where is leaking from.

If its the water pump, wouldn't it be leaking out fast..? Coz its just a drip...

Underneath the car it would be lined up near the turbo area...

Its strange, because i noticed the leak two weeks before it decided to over heat, and it was fine in that two weeks, then all of a sudden it went three quarter hot. When i looked under the car, it was dripping faster.... But now its just back to the minor dripping...

Yes they do. I just did a search for "coolant leak" and got this thread, my R33 s2 dropped about a litre of coolant today, and that's just after having the coolant system flushed and replacing the water pump! So it's not the water pump.

I'm buggered where if i know where it's coming from, the farthest i can trace back without starting to pull shit apart is the top of the left engine mount; I noticed a drop of coolant there. Basically what JC said, for all the world it looks like it's coming from the air side turbo / something very close or feeding to it. The other strange thing is it seems to only occur when the engine is cold... However this could be cause it evaporates from the heat before it has a chance to reach the ground/engine mount/whatever.

This just after I think everything is fixed! god dammut. Somebody help us! anyone with their motor pulled half apart around? If not it'll be me tomorrow... I'm meant to be going to the damn Indy and I have a 600k trip to do to get there!

Okay so I just had a quick look on fast... IF it IS coming from the turbo, which i reeeeeeealy hope it isn't, it would probably be leaking from either of the connections circled in red

Hmmm yeah jezzerr....I was thinking its that too...

But mine happens after it has warmed up....i just started it then and let it idle....after a couple of minutes it started to drip... i had a look underneath, and i can see coolant around behind the water pump, but it drips on the passenger side of the block..not where the pump is...but i guess it could run there....

Could be just a gasket?

How much do you reckon it would cost to get the pump replaced...and the timing belt since you have to take that off...

the guy at import spares reckoned $500!!

I got an aftermarket pump off the shelf! Exactly the same as a VL commy pump - same block. 91 bucks. Going slow it would take one person 4-5 hours to replace. To illustrate, once me and my mate knew what we were doing, it took us an hour and a bit, go to whoa, using all hand tools. It's not really as hard as people make it out to be, you just have to accept that there is no quick way to do it, and it's pretty systematic from there. Just make sure you mark the timing belt location on the cams and the crank, and take good note of the slack in the belt, and remember to only make it as tight when you're putting it back together. Otherwise you have to pull the freaking thing right back apart again!

Timing belts are $140 ish, $60 odd for good coolant, so that's $300 odd in parts, and in all reality it should only take a qualified mechanic with all the right tools 2 hours to do the job, but you can bet your life you wont get the job done for $400 anywhere. add that to the fact that they'll probably find "a worn fanbelt" etc, and you'll be up for $600 at least, vs a day getting to know how your engine works.

Meanwhile, my leak has started up again, I pretty sure it was slow enough that it was just evaporating while the motor was still hot. feeling around as best I could, it doesn't seem to be coming from the turbo... sigh.

it'll run off the lines and not appear to come from the turbo if there is a leak up near the washer..

look, all you have up on the passenger side is either coolant feed or coolant return to the turbo.. so if it is definitely in that area, its definitely the turbo or the lines.

Yeah i got a mate that knows how to replace the pump, so can help me out...

I wanna change the timing belt anyway so thats all good....

Hmm...have to work out my finances by the sounds of it, and i just sold my old car too!! FARK!

sounds like your turbo coolant pipes .. they have copper washers as gaskets, replace them

Yeah thats what i thought before... But now i can actually see coolant underneath and behind the water pump area...

having a leaking problem too. only happens sometimes after a long drive. once i stop turn car off it leaks coolant for about 10mins. but no sign of it missing from the container or the radiator :S not sure if its coming from turbo line, when i floor the car past 4k revs makes a funny screaming sound now. no one can seem to help with it.

Jesus 7 year old thread dig up and youve created a new thread.

The screaming sound is probably the studs on your exhaust manifold check all the nuts are up tight I had the two on on number 6 cylinder loose making that noise.

    • I used to have Walbro 255's when they were a pretty common update. (or were they 044? 040?) In any case I had a dirty tank. I thought the tank was good, but I would find the filter would clog in maybe ~50km of driving. If the issue persists, well, your fuel system or tank has crap in it that the pump is sucking up.
    • Hi. Ok thanks for the info. I/we do not know what tune is on that Nistune ECU so it is why there is stock ECU and that Nistune is for later when the car is done. I have guy who tunes Nistune and other ECU so i will then take it to him to see and properly tune for the car   And for the update. On 99,9% it is bad fuel pump. Which is wierd cuz it is like 2 years old(brand new walbro 255) and that filter (also brand new) was dirty.  I was alwaya pumped premium(100) on very good petrol station so i dont know how is that possible...

    • Stock ECU (or more accurately stock tune) absolutely refuses to go over 10psi and behaves like you have seen. The Nistune is the same if it is the stock tune. If the Nistune chip has been tuned, the resulting tune could be literally anything for any combination of parts. The Nistune just makes the stock ECU Tunable.
    • So stock ECU does not like anything above 10 psi?  That Nistune one is just for "try" if it will be any different, I know it need to be tune for that. I know but YOU may know about these problem but i/we dont. They few little Skylines here let alone people who know anything about tham so that is why iam asking here
