Ok I need some advice.

I am considering buying a r33 series 2 with 150,000 kms for really, really cheap. As the kms are so high i have a few questions

1. Within 12-18months all going to plan (nothing breaking down etc) I would probably purchase a new rb25det and drop it in. How much would I be looking at for labour to do this? Are there any major problems that I should be aware of in doing this or is it just a matter of dropping in the engine? Would I be looking at the 5-6k mark incl labour?

2. With 150,000 kms is this going to be dicey driving around as a daily driver? I assume at this stage things will be wearing out left, right and centre? I do a fair bit of driving. What things should I look out for?

Basically I just wanna know if it will be cost effective to do the engine swap and if the car will be reliable for use in the meantime.

All help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

mines on 130,000 and still flies around. not many problems at all, still handles the same as it did when i picked it up with 54,000 on the clock. rather than buying a new rb25 just reco your current one and or 3 litre bottom end if you wanna spend a few more $s to gain some power / capacity

the only prob you may come accross will be turbo, but these cars in stock form will last you up to the 300 000k mark if and only if you look after the motor. Keep it seviced.

150k on the clock, who cares?

Forget about the odometer reading with an import, especially one as popular as an R33. It is a popular excercise to wind them back as most people know so judge each car on its own merits.

I gaurantee there is a lot of cars out there with 150k on the clock in ten times as good nick as others with "80k".

Has it a bleed valve, boost gauge, pod etc?? Does it have any service history? Are the rear tyres bald? Brake pads worn out?

If unsure on what to look out for get it checked out by an expert including a leak down test on the engine and take it from there.

$200 spent on a comprehensive inspection ( not from nrma etc) could save you thousands later. Good luck.

So the car should be right for a while as long as its been well maintained and not too heavily boosted?

If and when the time does come for a reco how much do they usually cost? Like for a reasonably comprehensive one?

I just dont wanna buy it and realise a reco is gonna cost me an arm and a leg and find myself worse off

    • Yea - I mean I've seen my fuel pump which is decades old and uh, while I'm not saying this with real knowledge... but I sure get the ick at using anything in the fuel system that produced the state of that pump. Many years ago I went through multiple pumps (and strainers) before I dropped the tank to clean it out with extreme violence. I'm talking the car would do maybe 50km before coming to a halt, which resulted in me cleaning out the filter with some brake cleaner and going on my way. None of my stuff ever looked like what came out of your fuel tank. I don't think I'd be happy with it unless every single component was replaced (or at least checked/cleaned/confirmed to be clean here).
    • I'm not going to recommend an EBC pad. I don't like them. Just about anything else would suit me better. I've been using Intima pads for a while now.
    • Agreed, and in particular the earth strap that should go from the subframe to the chassis but it often broken or left off. There is a section in the R32 workshop manual you can follow for troubleshooting if you don't see anything suspicious, and depending where you are (there is no location on your user profile) you should be able to get your hands on a second hand replacement unit still if needed
    • Yeah they mention as a R34 for 2.5 Turbo...but then again thos "small" were also for R34 by that different site. But i look into it and that 310mm EBC is for R34 GTT. And by those you linked the specs are the same 🙂    EDIT: I found these on one site here: DBA 4000 series T3 DBA42304S They are 310mm...and it says are for R34GTT...are there good? EDIT2: ok they have pads too.  What "color" should i get for street use? I dont want/need some noisy ones...(and if they are not that dusty that is good too)
    • Yeah, shame. Maybe  driver's carpet is available 🙏. I am waiting for both amayama and nangun to confirm.
