Well folks now that the F1 season has come to an end it's time to look to the next one.

After hearing the news on sunday that tyre changes are back in and that we will have a new more interesting qualifying system i decided that i will go to the melb GP afterall. So i have booked and paid for some tickets in the Brabham stand. I can't wait.

Who else thinks next year is going to be good?

What do you think about the new rules?

I think its great that they are reverting back to letting the teams change tyres during the course of a race.

Im also interested to see if the new v8 engines they will use will be just as fast as the old v10's. Also interesting to see if the engines will rev the same and what note they will have.

Hope there is more passing next year, and Webber and Williams get their act together and win plenty of races + the championship if thats not to much to ask :)

yeah mate, october 31 is the cut-off to be able to buy grandstand tickets at the previous years pricing :) I got in on the last day!

I am hoping the new rules will give some chance back to the bridgestone runner who have been absolutely pounded by michelens this year.

I don't understand the qualifying changes. Whats the point of qualifying for qualifying? Just one run to see whose the quickest is good enough.

It seems to punish the fastest as they have to spend more time qualifying, but I guess in way it makes it more even I suppose.

I'm not bothered by the tyre changes, but michelen is pretty pissed off. They'll probably just let bridgestone be the only tyre supplier for 2007. Undecided as to whether this is a good thing or not. I suppose it brings the performance down to the car makers and drivers rather than the tyres.

yeah i still think the old system that was in place for 30 years was much better than anything they have dreamt up lately.

Syshter: I would be quite sad to see michelein leave F1 as the tyre war really adds to the excitement seeing different teams trying to make the most of two very different tyres.

Cant wait - they have already started to get the roads set up for the F1 next year (i drive it every day and my office looks over the track).

Being right after the Commonwealth Games - they are expecting more numbers next year.

New rules / qualifying will certainly make it interesting!!!

Look at it from the manufactuer's point of view. Max Mosley and Co. are blabing on about cost saving and what have Michelin saved? They spent an entire year developing tyres to last 1 weekend, and now they have to go back to developing short life tyres again! Back to square 1. If I were Michelin I'd be pissed off too.

The good thing is we get to see tyre changes in pit lane again. Have you seen the drawings of the 2008 cars? They want teams to develop cars with a gap in the rear wings.

Yeah it adds another dimension to it. But some manufacturers can be disadvantaged by the tyres they use. As you said every team with Bridgestones was getting their arse kicked by the teams with micheleins. If they all used the same it would show how good the manufacturers are at building race cars and how good the drivers are. But then again I suppose how good they are at building f1 cars doesn't exactly correlate to how good they are at building road cars.

Yeah exactly. I think that was their point that by pissing michelein off, michelein will leave f1 so Bridgestone is the sole supplier. This would cut development costs for tyres, as teams wouldn't be competing with other teams tyres.

we hopefully will be displaying our cars there again in 2006... and needless to say, this is what my boot looks like every event in relation to car shows :P

Oh, and i wouldnt like to see it become a one tyre branded race.

The competition is what makes it on certain circuits etc

I agree, competition is a good thing, although the chances of Michelin hanging around after 2006 are looking pretty slim...if MM has his way.

I'm glad tyre stops are back. The one set of tyres per race did do it's job in dishing up some exciting racing towards the end of races, but it just didn't seem right not to have the mechanics in the pit lane changing tyres during the stops.

As for qualifying, I personally didn't mind the current format. It provided it's fair share of grid shake ups through the season and that led to some of the more exciting racing through the season with the likes of Raikonnen and Montoya carving their way through the pack from the rear of the grid.

The only thing I would have changed would be the way the running order was worked out. Instead of it being based on where you finished in the previous race, it should have been based on provisional qualifying results.

In saying all that, the new system could be ok. It all sounds a little confusing, but I guess you get back some of the excitement of having the top runners on the track battling it out for pole towards the end of a session. I think I'll just reserve judgement on this one till a few races go by... :P

I'm also keen to go down to Melb for F1 next year as I'm keen to hear the V8's in action for the first time. Hopefully all the changes lead to some more exciting racing next season.

i still think both michelein and bridgestone are equally disadvantaged. as bridgestone also spent last year delevoping 1 race tyres (they just weren't that good at it lol).

The V8's were the better part IMO.

Especially the Utes... it was gold. Its more like destruction derby than a race.

You need to fork out good $$$ to get a decent spot to see @ Albert Park.

Or get there very early to get into the grand stands.

Otehrwise (where we are) isnt too bad but they just go past you too fast!

yeah i will be in the brabham stand again. it's $620 a ticket but i figure if i'm going to make the effort to travel down i may as well get the best tickets they have! :)

i'm sure it's going to be awesome as the 2005 race was a little lame. :D

kel where is there any infor on 2006 GP rally? I've searched and searched but all i can find is 2005 info. I was actually keen to compete in the 06 one.

    • Hey Dave, welcome aboard! Good to see another soon-to-be Stagea owner here. The wagons are awesome — plenty of space, still got that Skyline DNA, and loads of potential if you’re into mods. Definitely post up pics when you get it, everyone here loves seeing new builds. What model/year are you looking at?
    • See if you can thermal epoxy a heatsink or two onto it?
    • The other problem was one of those "oh shit we are going to die moments". Basically the high spec Q50s have a full electric steering rack, and the povo ones had a regular hydraulic rack with an electric pump.  So couple of laps into session 5 as I came into turn 2 (big run off now, happily), the dash turned into a christmas tree and the steering became super heavy and I went well off. I assumed it was a tyre failure so limped to the pits, but everything was OK. But....the master warning light was still on so I checked the DTCs and saw – C13E6 “Heat Protection”. Yes, that bloody steering rack computer sitting where the oil cooler should be has its own sensors and error logic, and decided I was using the steering wheel too much. I really appreciated the helpful information in the manual (my bold) POSSIBLE CAUSE • Continuing the overloading steering (Sports driving in the circuit etc,) “DATA MONITOR” >> “C/M TEMPERATURE”. The rise of steering force motor internal temperature caused the protection function to operate. This is not a system malfunction. INSPECTION END So, basically the electric motor in the steering rack got to 150c, and it decided to shut down without warning for my safety. Didn't feel safe. Short term I'll see if I can duct some air to that motor (the engine bay is sealed pretty tight). Long term, depending on how often this happens, I'll look into swapping the povo spec electric/hydraulic rack in. While the rack should be fine the power supply to the pump will be a pain and might be best to deal with it when I add a PDM.
    • And finally, 2 problems I really need to sort.  Firstly as Matt said the auto trans is not happy as it gets hot - I couldn't log the temps but the gauge showed 90o. On the first day I took it out back in Feb, because the coolant was getting hot I never got to any auto trans issues; but on this day by late session 3 and then really clearly in 4 and 5 as it got hotter it just would not shift up. You can hear the issue really clearly at 12:55 and 16:20 on the vid. So the good news is, literally this week Ecutek finally released tuning for the jatco 7 speed. I'll have a chat to Racebox and see what they can do electrically to keep it cooler and to get the gears, if anything. That will likely take some R&D and can only really happen on track as it never gets even warm with road use. I've also picked up some eye wateringly expensive Redline D6 ATF to try, it had the highest viscosity I could find at 100o so we will see if that helps (just waiting for some oil pan gaskets so I can change it properly). If neither of those work I need to remove the coolant/trans interwarmer and the radiator cooler and go to an external cooler....somewhere.....(goodbye washer reservoir?), and if that fails give up on this mad idea and wait for Nissan to release the manual 400R
    • So, what else.... Power. I don't know what it is making because I haven't done a post tune dyno run yet; I will when I get a chance. It was 240rwkw dead stock. Conclusion from the day....it does not need a single kw more until I sort some other stuff. It comes on so hard that I could hear the twin N1 turbos on the R32 crying, and I just can't use what it has around a tight track with the current setup. Brakes. They are perfect. Hit them hard all day and they never felt like having an issue; you can see in the video we were making ground on much lighter cars on better tyres under brakes. They are standard (red sport) calipers, standard size discs in DBA5000 2 piece, Winmax pads and Motul RBF600 fluid, all from Matty at Racebrakes Sydney. Keeping in mind the car is more powerful than my R32 and weighs 1780, he clearly knows his shit. Suspension. This is one of the first areas I need to change. It has electronically controlled dampers from factory, but everything is just way too soft for track work even on the hardest setting (it is nice when hustling on country roads though). In particular it rolls into oversteer mid corner and pitches too much under hard braking so it becomes unstable eg in the turn 1 kink I need to brake early, turn through the kink then brake again so I don't pirouette like an AE86. I need to get some decent shocks with matched springs and sway bars ASAP, even if it is just a v1 setup until I work out a proper race/rally setup later. Tyres. I am running Yoko A052 in 235/45/18 all round, because that was what I could get in approximately the right height on wheels I had in the shed (Rays/Nismo 18x8 off the old Leaf actually!). As track tyres they are pretty poor; I note GTSBoy recently posted a porker comparo video including them where they were about the same as AD09.....that is nothing like a top line track tyre. I'll start getting that sorted but realistically I should get proper sized wheels first (likely 9.5 +38 front and 11 +55 at the rear, so a custom order, and I can't rotate them like the R32), then work out what the best tyre option is. BTW on that, Targa Tas had gone to road tyres instead of semi slicks now so that is a whole other world of choices to sort. Diff. This is the other thing that urgently needs to be addressed. It left massive 1s out of the fish hook all day, even when I was trying not too (you can also hear it reving on the video, and see the RPM rising too fast compared to speed in the data). It has an open diff that Infiniti optimistically called a B-LSD for "Brake Limited Slip Diff". It does good straight line standing start 11s but it is woeful on the track. Nismo seem to make a 2 way for it.
