My mate was removing his spark plugs, noticed they where on there way out misfiring at highrpm.

His 2nd spark plug was cracked , so he said he pulled it out and bits of the sparkplug(white bit) fell down the bore he said its pinky finger nail size and about .3cm thick.

what will happen now? he got a vacume and tried sucking it out unsure if its out

is his engine stuffed? or will it melt and eventually come out the exhaust ports?

thx

That white part is ceramic - very tuff and can withstand alot of heat. The reason why they use that material in the first place. It needs to be removed full stop!

This will really do some damage, don't know how you could do it without removing the head, have to think about that one.

Get a hugely powerful vacuum - I have one at home for use with asbestos to drag away all the airborne particles. Suction is incredible.

Do an oil change very soon after and filter. Hope it doesnt get into the big end bearings etc..

I guess you could get an oil sample done to see if any foreign particles in it.

or if hes financial enough...why risk it?, full rebuild...good excuse for it!

I find people like the idea of being forced into doing something major to their car like a rebuild as the situation demands it rather then electively choosing to do it. Tell your gf/wife oh the motor is shagged gotta rebuild, got no choice and you act pissed about it but smile when she turns around!

I had the identical thing happen but luckily only one piece fell in and I could see it sitting on top of the piston using a lead light which was at the top of the bore.

I also tried a vacuum but to no avail.

Went to Autobarn and bought a "claw pick up tool", $10.00 and that got it out just, as i dropped it twice and nearly lost sight of it.

Basically, it is a long flexible coil, thin in diameter, with a small claw on the end. It has a button on the top that when pressed opens the claw, and when released closes it up.

TRY THIS AT YOUR OWN PERIL!!!!

As mentioned, if other pieces have gone out of sight it can do horrendous engine damage. If you are lucky and it blows out the exhaust it will then make a mess of the exhaust wheel.

    • Mixing things up - installed some leather recaros to match the leather seat covered rear seats. Interior looks pretty schmick now except for some slight wear on the steering wheel which I will monitor and address if it becomes worse or actually noticeable!

    • I'm normally copping my own abuse from neglecting my daily drivers. "Those suspension bushes will last a bit more", "Don't worry about the oil leak, just keep topping it up". The project cars I'm always doing things slowly on them as I'm wanting them to be done better, and neater, and nicer. Luckily I don't have to deal with 18 year old Matt's "Learning to wire" stuff in the project cars. And there's only one piece of wiring I'm displeased about in the Landcruiser, and it's about to be cut out... However, the box loads of parts that have been going through this place lately for the Landcruiser... Brake pads Brake Rotors Full handbrake overhaul Wheel Bearings Seals Swivel hubs Steering Boxes Half the suspension joints Shocks Air bags (Ones to go in the rear springs for towing) Water pump Timing kit Lower timing case Harmonic Balancer Radiator Lots of other little seals and shits Gas struts for the bonnet New power window switches And god knows what else I've forgotten... Ha ha ha I have my fingers crossed the pinion seals don't start leaking on the diffs, that the transfer case doesn't leak, and the gearbox input shaft doesn't leak, nor the rear main seal. As they're about the only seals I haven't replaced in the driveline! I'm seriously eyeing off buying new caliper rebuild kits front and rear brake calipers... I'll probably recheck all the valve clearances soon too, and hopefully, it should be all good and sweet to haul some long distance trips again!
    • Every time I pull my 3x gauges out of the console and see the crack-addict way that I did the wiring, and I just can't bring myself to tear it all apart and "make it nice", because it is currently working. In fact, the last time I was in there I probably made it worse.
