hey all i have just bought myself a skyline so i am a bit new to the workings of the car so i was wondering if u guys could shed some light...

1. my hicas light keeps coming on????

2. i fitted a turbo timer and it all works fine. but on my car the doors lock when you start driving and then when u turn the car off they unlock so when the turbotimer turns off the doos unlock??? know how to get around this??

3. whenever i shift gears mainly 1-2 and 3-4 at high revs it crunches gears... i know its not my driving, the clutch releases really close to the floor but it doesnt slip at all?? and the gearbox is tight and no rattles??? so i have no idea what the problem is maybee a bent clutch falk??

any feedback on any of these would be great thanks leigh.

hicas light = check your power steering fluid, crunching of the gears sounds like synchros mate, i had the same from 3-4 change, i had to get the box pulled apart, and it cost me a pretty penny, but thats mainly cos my box is the same outside size as a gtr box, so harder to pull out and in...good luck mate :)

2. Get rid of the timer. If you can control yourself for 1 minute before you are ready to stop, then you don't need the timer - it is quite safe to turn the engine off immediately.

3. Synchros. But, if the clutch engages quite close to the floor, then it might be time for a replacement clutch.

I would have to disagree with it being quite safe to turn the engine off immediately.

Yes...for the engine, but it will totally screw your turbo. That is why the timer was designed.

As for the clutch, take it to a mechanic to have it checked- -they don't have to know anything about imports to tell you what is wrong with it and there are so many possibilities that I do not care to go into depth about it - it iwould take all night.

Hicas light.....does it just come on and stay on all the time or only after a certain amount of driving. Do you have an aftermarket steering wheel? Does your speedo play up at all? Does the steering go extremely heavy, semi heavy or not change at all when the light comes on?

In regards to the timer, what sort of alarm system do you have? Its probably a program some called "anti-hijack". Find out what system first and take it to your nearest security installer and un-program it.

My HICAS light basically stays on all the time now, but ive removed the hicas at the rear for a lock kit, my steerings all the same no lack of, although i understeer heaps (skyline trait) ive just moved on i think my hicas rear unit was screwed anyways.....all in all man, put alock bar on it and remove the hicas rear steering all together its better that way i can tell u the proper way to do it if u buy one without instructions.

3LIT3 FORS3 I would be interested to hear your reasons why not having a turbo timer will "totally screw your turbo"?

The turbo timer was conceived long before advances in turbo design and oil lubrication have made it an unnecessary waste of money.

It was developed to prevent cooking of the oil in the turbo oil lines which would cause blockages and starve the turbo of oil. New synthetic oil compounds and the removal of certain impurities prevent this from happening.

Doing 10 hot laps at the track and immediately shutting off the engine may have some effect, but the occasional romp at the track doesn't warrent wasting money on a turbo timer.

As for the crunching of gears. I'd say it was the syncros. This is common.

It has absolutely nothing to do with oil cooking in the lines and causing a blockage.

It is called coking. Coking happens when oil (of any type - no matter how good it is) is subject to high heat and high friction.

Turbos can sit comfortably at 700 degrees C and spin at speeds of an average 150,000 rpm.

The bearings spinning at 150,000rpm cause the oil to severely thin out and sometimes froth up. Your turbo is spinning this fast as soon as it hits full boost so it doesn't take any amount of track work to get it there. With this extremely thin, frothy oil covering your bearings, if you switch off the car immediately it does not give the turbo sufficient time to cool down to an adequate temperature. This added heat on the oil that is already very thin and frothy causes it to bake onto the bearings. Once you get a collection of this baked on crud it starts wearing the bearings away...just like having grit in them. Say bye bye turbo!

On the other hand you can do what experts advise and listen to people who have decades of experience in this area and install a turbo timer. This timer will keep your engine running at idle for a minute or so and, thereby, cool down the turbo. This also has the effect of fresh oil being flushed over the turbo bearings removing any thin frothy deposits that may be present. I CAN 100% GUARANTEE THAT A TURBO VEHICLE WITH A TIMER FITTED WILL HAVE IT'S TURBO OUTLAST ONE THAT DOESN'T.

FURTHER TO THAT, I ALSO 100% GUARANTEE THAT ANY VEHICLE FITTED WITH A TURBO TIMER, EVEN IF IT DOESN'T HAVE A TURBO, WILL OUTLAST A VEHICLE THAT HASN'T GOT ONE AND DRIVEN UNDER THE SAME CONDITIONS.

As for the synchros...you may be right, but he did mention that the clutch engages right on the floor which would indicate a problem with the hydraulic system or pressure plate.

some alarms do this, read turbotimer manual

Try changing gearbox oil, use Redline Lightweight Shockproof -- this "liquid gold" is known to fix many gearbox problems like you describe.

    • Bit of an update to this one. Having some issues on the dyno that held us back (boost spiking) and I want to pass some info over you guys and see what you think is wrong with my setup. The current readout on this dyno is 462rwkw on a low reading dyno so keep in mind it is a real world 500rwkw setup on a hub dyno. Don't read into the power figure too much as a sign of the issue. The short and curly of it is: 2.8 Litre Racepace build RB25 NEO N/A Head with VCT (internally standard however ) Borgwarner EFR 8474  Turbosmart 50mm Straight Gate + Mac valve 6Boost Manifold 4" dump to full 4" exhaust (nil restrictions) Wastegate plumbed back in and all angles in the exhaust system are acceptable and not too sharp. GFB SV52 BOV in cooler piping  Turbosmart BOV in EFR Housing   The issue we are having is it comes onto full boost for example at 4000rpm and spikes to 24/25psi, before dropping down to 17psi before slowly rising back up to the target boost of 23psi. It was extremely uncontrollable and the tuner actually had to ramp in boost progrssively with each 1000rpm on each boost setting we selected to try and reduce the amount of spiking. Sometimes we would see a drop of 10psi from the peak at the beginning of the run, to the low, until it took the next 500-1000rpm to stabilise back up to the target boost. The tuner is pretty confident that the straight gate is just a poorly designed product and leaks too much boost upon cracking the gate open and theres no way to fix it other than going to a poppet valve. He's also confient theres no ignition breakdown or floating valves. The fueling is extremely stable as well. Turbo speed is somewhere around the 109,000rpm area. The spanner in the works for me is that prior to this Borgwarner and StraightGate, the car was tuned on -5 twins at a diferent tuner, and he also had issues controlling the boost with it spiking around the same rpm range, so to me this sounds like the same issue and it can't be anything on the turbo side as this was all changed and I think the behaviour is extremely similar, if not the same. We also removed the mac valve and did a run on wastegate pressure and it still spiked and had the same behaviour. My thoughts on possibilities are: Boost Leak VCT Cam Gear isn't reliably activating consistently - (On this however, we did a run with the VCT disabled and the boost still spiked) Turbosmart BOV is not handling the boost? However this seems unlikely to not be able to handle 20psi. I have a couple of logs that I can't make sense of if anybody knows how to read them and can obtain further logs of other parameters if they are not enough, happy to pay for anyones time. The dyno readout with the power figure is the most recent last week. The other picture is from two weeks prior to that where we couldn't break 400kw (we removed the cat), however the issue of the boost control persisted. @Lithium @Piggaz @burn4005 @GTSBoy @discopotato03 I've tagged those that were quite active in recent pages here, no disrespect to those that know turbos well but I missed tagging.     • I recently purchased a 2018 Infiniti Q60, which has an SD card navigation map. I can see my system has options for real time traffic updates etc, and am wondering if there is something I can purchase to get this working? I can see there are at least updated maps for USA and Canada, but nothing for Australia. Surely Infiniti took changing road systems and city expansions into account when they decided to use an inbuilt navigation over Android Auto/Apple Car Play, or are we doomed to drive on streets that don't exist in the navigation system if you drive to a new area?
    • Luckily I didn't put in etch primer as I just found out it's not compatible with my body filler lol. Also just need to sand the panel anywhere between 150-400 grit so I'm in the clear there. It does say to not apply to soft old paint, I assume that means paint that is flaking, peeling,etc
