WazR32GTst,

Just last nite.

13.3 @ 106mph (2.3 60ft). Letting down the tyres wrong let me down.

I had 14.5psi in one and 18.5psi in the other and it was not predictable at all. The S-afc had to run a really rich map (read power killer) and I couldn't take it past 6000rpm because of a mystery knock that I can't get rid of.

Had a real mixed bag of passes , most slow. 13.7s, a 14 even a 15.

Other than that it was good fun as always. I went toe to toe with a drag torana in a burnout that had all the staging lane covered in smoke for a couple of minutes, so that was good.

Give them a ring & ask!

Mate told me they originally made them for speedway racing, but the drag guys found out about them & started using them.

You can get them as a slick or they will cut a few treads into them, so if you had them on the car on the street, the cops shouldn't be able to do anything because they are just a retread tyre. They make a really loud howl when you do get them to spin it sounds really cool unlike any other tyre howl that i have ever heard. I think mate paid around $150each tyre for 265/50/14 & he supplied the cases.

What was your 3rd run Merli? It looked like a 12sec pass but the stupid c0ck head comentators were too busy jibbering about the new drag strip and didnt bother reading out your time.

Congrats Merli ;) Good stuff! Great to see a fellow GTS25t break the sub 13 barrier.

Gotta be happy to crack into the 12's for the first time. High 11's is possible with that mph.

I've got the same top end (115.83 mph - best so far). Just need to get my damn 60ft into the same 2.0 range as you.

Thanks Matt ;)

Yeah, good to finally get a decent time out of her... I've got some Nitto NT555Rs coming soon, and I'll be putting them on R32 GTR rims that I've already sourced, so hopefully that will allow me to launch a tiny bit harder and go for low 12s...

With slicks, and God holding the gearbox together, 11s should be possible if the mph is any indication.

Andrew,

Were you running the D01J's? If so, what launch technique did you employ? What sort of burnout, tyre pressures, slip or dump, rev's etc. Thanks mate ;) My 540's have yet to give their best. Thanks to a shot clutch (now upgraded).

11's will need a very hard launch (low 1.9 60) NT555R's will do it. My next rear rubber will be the same.

I slapped on my 17" D01Js that I use for circuit racing...

I also have 18" D01Js on my normal street tyres, but they are rock hard, it seems if you don't drive them hard and get some heat into them often, they "go off" and turn rock hard ;)

So I decided to put the softer D01Js that I use for track use on.

My turbo comes on boost HARD at 4000rpm, so it's a hard car to launch properly... I was launching at 3500rpm, and the car would bog down, slowly spool up, hit boost and break into violent wheelspin :(

On my 2.034 60 foot pass, I dialed up 5000rpm, and jerked the clutch out quickly to the friction point... This caused the car to launch forward violently, where I then kept slipping the clutch for another second or two until I knew I had enough traction to floor the car and release the clutch.

This technique effectively kept revs at about 4500-5000rpm, never letting it drop below 4000rpm, so I didn't have to wait so long for the turbo to spool after the initial launch.

540s are great tyres, but their sidewalls are stiff, as they're primarily a circuit tyre, just like the D01Js. Not good for drags, because they don't flex much... The NT555Rs nowever have a very soft sidewall to absorb the shock of the launch ;)

merli... your car sounds similar to mine. late boost = violent when it hits boost.

I did a 60ft of 2.03, same thing watsisname Dropped mine from around 5500, edged the car off and slipped it just to the point where i felt it edgy on the traction

Simex 215/60 on 16 inch 32 GTR wheels.

roughly minda power you making also merli ??

Thanks for the feedback guys - very handy!

Andrew,

My car has the same power delivery as yours & R31Nismoid’s.

As you said, it's very tricky to launch. I've had the same problems. Dump @ 3-3.5k & it bogs down. Dump @ 4.5+k & it hooks up for a sec, then blazes the tyres. I've yet to be able to do the, "clutch slip feed power on launch", as the old clutch gave up the ghost at the slightest hint of me slipping it ;) The new clutch is up to the task no prob. Just need to practice on the strip now.

Yeah I knew the 540's weren't the greatest drag rubber (stiffest sidewall R compound there is!). I got them as they're well priced over here in Adelaide (paid $280 - 235/45/17 & $310 - 255/40/17) & they're great on the street.

I've got a contact for 555R's - $425 for 275/40/17

anytime.

i've only raced twice at any strip and only night in the GTS-R

Mine hits boost about 4500 though and is furious, but in saying that i have a twin plate (i think it is as it makes that shh shh metalnoise when you push the clutch) and just get it just to friction and slowly roll to to the second white (pre stage i think) then push it in a tad (you stop) then your laughing cause you only ease it a touch back and you launch hard. I got wheelspin all the way through 1st but very minimal with no bogging at all.

Handbrake is something me never thougt of

*he's going to practice that one*

R31Nismoid, I made the following figures:

280rwkw @ 1.2 bar on CRD's (Croydon Autosports) dyno, and

263.8rwkw @ 1.1 bar on C&V's dyno.

If you're wondering why my terminal speed is a little low for that power, it's because I ran 100% street trim. Not one iota of weight reduction. I ran with FULL stereo, subwoofer, about 40kgs of sound deadening, spare tyre and all interior trim and seats.

I've ordered some 245/50/16 NT555Rs for the two R32 GTR rims I have... I could have gone for those 275/40/17s, but I thought I'd trade a little width for more sidewall... I hope I made the right decision.

ice180: Last time I went to the drags, I tried loading up using the handbrake, and I promptly snapped my right driveshaft clean in half ;) I ain't gonna try that again in a hurry, cos I felt like the biggest dickhead having to be towed off in front of everybody ;)

    • This looks great! Awesome to have the 5 speed with an LSD in this. The Recaro's look like SR2's or SR3's. It's a shame they've been retrimmed as they would have looked sweet in their original colours. I think I'd want my agent to be a little more up front and informative too. I've never imported but I reckon it would make me a little nervous, so the more info the better.
    • Thanks for doing that Duncan! Makes you a good person in my books. We don't get kangaroos or wombats here. But we have bats and it's similar. AFAIK it's often the mums with a baby attached that get hit because they drop lower when starting from a tree. If you hit an animal, check on it. https://www.ifaw.org/au/resources/wildlife-rescue-app An app to get the closest wildlife rescue contact.
    • My dream is also to have a proper hoist, but I don't think it will ever happen. My quickjack is probably as close as I'll ever get, it really is very good though.
    • Yeah we keep on in the dailies, it is pretty poor how many animals get hit and the driver leaves without checking....have saved a couple of little ones over the years. Bit of a gruesome job though, pouches generally need to be cut open because they are so tight and often the joey doesn't realise mum is gone so they are still locked onto the teat. I checked the modules in front of the DS wheel where an oil cooler should go.... There is the radar unit - that can go for race use) One of the 2 HX water pumps, the silver cylinder. That needs to be kept but might be able to be relocated But the bad news, the big computer mounted vertically in front of the wheel (blocking any potential air exit) is the electric steering computer. That is required until/unless i do a hydraulic steering conversion, and in CAD based modern car design it is not like I can just pop a big unit like that somewhere else (plus the loom would be too short anywhere else too). So, the passenger side is OK to clear out (just use a smaller washer reservoir, potentially elsewhere), but the DS no beuno
    • Well, all the best with the new camry It was interesting to hear about the UK process, it is generally a lot more streamlined here with a shipping agent looking after all the import side (noting the exact final price can still be a surprise.....) and I've used a few different brokers on the japan (or US) side, and never had any trouble with any of them....luck of the draw I guess. You mentioned you didn't get the auction sheet (understandable since you bought it from a dealer, not auction), but I always try and get hold of that because they are pretty thorough. I've imported 2x R grade vehicles over the years and both were fine, repairs in Japan are pretty thorough compared to here in Oz.
