I am aware that fitting say a 3.5 inch exaust and airfilters to my stock GTR will increase power, and most likely fuel economy..

however will this increase in power be potentially damaging to the engine or is it just a good thing all round.

thanks guys,

just wanted to make sure, dont really need the extra performance although it would be nice, just thought it would be better to improve the economy and dont want it to blow up on me.

i drive the GTR for work every so i put alot of miles on it.

thanks for the info.

I didn't really get any better economy. If you do a lot of kms make sure you select a quiet exhaust...I have a kakimoto which is pretty quiet. Good to free up the exhaust though otherwise any other performance bits or boost increase you are not getting the full benefit of.

It my understanding that a bigger exhaust is better for top end, but can lose power at low revs (no backpressure).

So just don't go sticking a 5in exhaust on, and you should be fine. 3.5in should be dandy

I heard that with turbo's you don't need to worry about backpressure? I don't understand how or why? or even what the deal is with backpressure.. maybe someone could explain that... but that's what i've heard

Good point.

*now* I remember, the less restriction after the turbo the better.

but as low rpm, would the turbos provide enough of a restriction? Or it is just that as soon as boost starts to kick in, there is more than enough exhaust...

ideas?

Gasses only flow because of pressure differentials. If you have too much back pressure in the exhaust system, then the exhaust gasses aren't going to flow as readily through the turbine. Then the turbine doesn't spin as fast, and you don't get as much boost pressure.

the engine is pretty strong by itself, will last a long time on low power if looked after. Be More worried about the turbos letting go, if you want to be safe .8bar should be fine, if you want a bit more power a lot of guys run std turbos on 1bar fine.

Remember, the candle that burns twice as bright, burns half as long.

    • There's restrictor pills in the stock boost control hoses. That's how they set the amount that was bled off and hence the "high" boost setting. The usual mod in the day was to remove it and send the "high" boost setting up to about 14 psi.
    • Thanks Duncan, that's the best info I've read. Furthermore after learning about the PCM programming side controlling the factory boost solenoid, the purpose of the solenoid is to "bleed" boost when pin 25 is earthed, thus allowing spring pressure in the wastegate actuator to overcome diaphragm boost pressure, thus closing or reducing the position of the wastegate flap creating more boost as the turbo is able to spin faster. It's pretty cool to see a designated Pill to do exactly this, would have liked to have seen it with a tiny filter over the end for those moments in vacuum.  The constant bleed pill has now been removed completely from the system and solenoid boost control has been restored once again.   Case closed 😂
    • The wideband reading is meaningless if it's not running. Why are you using shitty old sidefeeds on any engine, let alone a Neo? What manifold and fuel rail are you using to achieve that? Beyond that, can't help you with AEM stuff as I've never been their ECU/CAS combo.
    • Manual boost controllers (where a little of the boost was bled off) were quite common back in the day, because they were cheap and easy. Generally they had a manual adjustment screw rather than being fixed like yours. Down side is they always bleed boost, not just when you want them to so an electronic boost controller that uses a solenoid will have less lag.
    • Hello , im new here and i have A31 home build  RB25det neo stock eng / turbo  aem ems 2 blue connector  aem 3.5 map aem cas disk aem wideband connected to ecu  355 lph pump 550 nismo yellow injectors side feed aftermarket regulator  and won’t start with base aem tuner basic tune eventually flipped cas 180 degree so it triggers on correct stroke not in exhaust cycle  Now it won’t start Wideband reads 10 and 11 at lowest fuel setting  and will share calibrations soon for aem tuner i think something is wrong in aem tuner    please if you have any information, am very grateful
