OK guys, I have been told from multiple sprayers, mechanics and enthusiasts that VHT Caliper Paint is the best stuff for the job...

Problem is that their colour choices are quite limited and hard to find; good luck to you all - I'm going to CarPlus down in Mona Vale on Thursday maybe, will call a few of you to see if you're keen - I'll just get the receipt and you can fix me up later :D

G'day peeps,

I painted my calipers a couple of years back and I recommend that you use proper high heat caliper paint unless you want your calipers to peel after a few months and look worse than stock anyway. Also it wasnt the quickest job Ive done because quite alot of patience is needed in prepping your calipers before you paint them.

Make sure you bring heaps of degreaser and heaps of old rags to clean your brake dust off. With the actual painting youll need to do more than 2 coats for a good job otherwise the finish will look shit.

And you will need to wait till each coat dries for a good job. I had to put my calipers in my mates oven to get the paint fully solid, then i did it again the following night for the second and third coat to male it look perfect. If youve ever taken your calipers apart there are quite a few bits and pieces to them which you dont want to lose.

Once you done the second or third coat put the caliper back together and hook it up remember you will need to refill your brake fluid and re bleed your brakes otherwise you will have no brakes.

I dont want to put you off but it might be better doing this in a garage or a workshop because it does tend to get a bit messy, and you definitely dont want brake fluid on your body work it will eat the paint like acid.

I might come down and give you a hand if im not too trasshed from xmas celebrations.

Cheers :D

Michael

Im there of course :)

Will bring some newspapers also...

Though for the best effect we should take them off? but its a bitch ey?

Any mechanic's wanna come along? lol

we able to do it with them still on? cause re doing the break fluid and so on sounds like a fare hassel

Could I just ask if you guys are painting your calipers on or off your cars?. If I have time I'll come out and help but if I see one car on bricks I gonna steal its wheels and not give them back.

Neil.

I think with the calipers on the car...

bad idea... they need to come off for a lasting job.. when i did mine a friend helped me and it took a while...5 hours roughly... but they still look damn good...there's a lot of cleaning involved... if you think getting the brakedust off yr wheels is bad..... you're in for a treat here.

Sure mate, the car's at the mechanic now getting pink slip. The wheels look good and my car looks drift spec cuz of the stock wheels on the back. Don't worry though, there has been no loss of traction.

I'll bring them to the day, where in Chatswood are we meeting?

I'm pretty sure degreaser is the way to go. They need to be pretty scmick before you paint them. I'll bring sandpaper too. I think the best way to paint them is to take the calipers off the discs and let them dangle off the brake lines so you don't need to bleed the brakes but can still paint the whole caliper

    • A few small updates since the previous post and lessons. I decided to do a little interior light upgrade on the 110. I quite like the iilumo items, even if they're a bit of a premium over other brands. You'll also note the Stedi Fogs, that will go into the S15 fog lights as I needed to match the bulbs since I got the new ones earlier. I hope they fit as the body is quite a bit longer than your normal bulb.  Annoyingly, I managed to trip the fuse, which normally wouldn't be an issue until I located the fuse. I can't say I've ever come across this. I had lucked out that someone nearby had a spare, but oddly enough Toyota dealerships seem to keep this in stock. I ordered some to keep in my stash and as luck would have it, someone else nearby tripped the same fuse so I passed on the favour.  I also did a little service on the 110 ahead of some additional work coming up. It's been annoying that Goleby's stopped carrying this particular HKS filter for the 110, so now I need to keep them on order from Japan. I also took the opportunity to install a bash plate and number plate riser. The plate riser is such a cheap but nice fix to help really tidy up the car. I'm tempted to now also replace my headlights, on this car. Both items were from Project Aero.    I also needed to replace the rear tyres on the 110, and after trying to get it aligned learnt that I need to replace some bushes in the front end, so that's next.  Closing out this update with a nicer picture as always!
    • Yeah mate, never miss it.
    • Any going to watch World Time Attack at SMSP this year?
    • Appreciate the correction on the "ground", that will make a huge difference to looking at this. That makes complete sense about AF70/AF71 which is what I had come down to being the issue, one of these. I'll have another look in the ignition wiring when I get a chance next week. I'll also make up a jumper wire for running that AF73 test.  ECU is fine, relay itself is fine, pump harness is fine and the pump itself is fine. I am going to upgrade the Walbro 255 anyway with a DW300 I have since I need to replace the fuel sender and I'm going to upgrade the FPR with my chasebays kit ready for new plenum/injectors/dbw, but I'll get this working first. That's why this is so frustrating.
