"Fully synthetic" has been deemed to be a minimum of 70% synthetic compounds. 100% synthetic is just that (which is why Nulon had to change their engine oil packaging). For reference, I enquired about Anglomoil's "Roadmaster 500" as I have heard good things about it in the past and it is around $55 per 5L tin (yes, a tin, like in days gone by). Here is their response to my questions if you can be bothered reading a wall of text; The Roadmaster 500 is a Group 3 based synthetic, I don't know of anyone making this type of oil from Group 5 base. Before the advent of Group 3 it was the norm to use a mixture of Group 4 and Group 5. The reason for this is that Group 4 is not a very good solvent for the additives and has limited seal swell characteristics. The Group 5 (Ester) was added at about 10% to enable the Group 4 to perform satisfactorily in these areas. This type of formulation was quite expensive to produce due to the cost of the base oils, the only product that comes to mind made this way is Mobil 1 due to Mobil being the worlds largest producer of Group 4 (Poly Alpha Olefin). The Group 3 base oil is a severely modified mineral oil with the same characteristics as Group 4 and has been determined that it can carry the title synthetic at a more economical price. This approach to most synthetic motor oils in the market is in the majority. There should be no problems with using E85 and Roadmaster 500. Yep I used Amsoil 10w40 years ago. Felt okay, but only used it twice as it felt/sounded loose toward the end of the 5k interval (back when I did 5k changes lol)

Haha, I think I like the top one. The angle of those lines in the lower one make me think HSV (VY specifically) plus the gently lines work with the rounded disposition of headlights and might flow a little better with the rest of the car. Nice drawings though

Just how tough did you think it was? It did overheat prior to this problem due to a radiator issue and has been pushing over 300awkw for a while now. Not bad for an unopened 2.5.

You make me laugh Craig, so fired up over this. You wanted to know surface area so I gave you some unbiased maths. Since you are directing at me: No, I don't want the standard airbox as I already have the intake sitting in my garage. The reason I went for a pod is because R2C don't make panel filters. From what I have seen their filter medium is the most efficient, best filtering, re-usable, dry filter on the market (at least that I could find).

lol, that would be the factory paper panel filter. So tell me again why you ditched it years ago for a K&N and more recently a Blitz? Something about restricting flow?

I will humour you and give you some maths to work out. I just measured the R2C pod that will be going on the Nismo intake I have for my Stagea (when I finally get it lol). Okay the closed end diameter of the filter medium is 130mm. Open end diameter is 150mm. The length of the filter medium between the two ends is 140mm. There are 44 folds in the filter medium each of which are 13mm deep. right then so to find lateral surface area (S) we need to use S = Pi(r+R)s Closed end radius ( r ) = 65mm Outlet end radius ( R ) = 75mm Slant height ( S ) = 140mm S = 3.1416 (140) 140 S = 61575 (rounded). This is for a solid surface and obviously doesn't take into account the folds. I presume your panel filter will be width x height? I don't have a panel filter lying around so I'll go off the K&N specs on their site which may or may not include the frame of the filter. http://www.knfilters...?Prod=33-2031-2 279mm x 167mm = 46593 not including folds. So if both were solid, the R2C pod has almost 1.5x the surface area of the oem panel filter. Feel free to work out the element size if you include the folds And just because I went all geek just then, here's something to even it up.

Hmm, that is interesting.

If you take the filter apart and straighten out the filter medium in both the pod design and the panel design, you'll find that generally the pod will have a larger amount of filter medium, thus larger surface area. I'd be interested to test out a decent pod on your car actually, but you'd have to extend the intake piping to either in front of the radiator or down to the area in front of the passenger front wheel. As it is, I do actually have such a pod sitting in my garage....

Agree 100% POD designs generally have a larger surface area than a panel filter, that said it also comes down to the efficiency of the filter medium. Definitely nothing against an airbox, nor a properly set up pod.
