Bilsteins Direct From Germany
djr81 replied to rehab2010's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
Harshness is mainly a function of low speed compression damping. The stiffer this is the harsher the ride. Beyond a surprisingly low point the stiffer this is the less grip the car offers. -
Benefits Of Mounting Intercooler At A Slant?
djr81 replied to eXquiSit's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Actually if you look at the old school F1 car intercoolers they are mounted (As are radiators) at and angle to the air flow. It reduces drag for a given amount of heat exchange. In a road car it is just for packaging. -
Yes the standard pump has a larger outer diameter (81 vesus 77mm) and more teeth. But you cannot see that unless you pull the pump off the motor & the backing plate off the pump.

Bilsteins Direct From Germany
djr81 replied to rehab2010's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
Well I wouldnt because I dont reckon that any cheap (ie <$2k) adjustable shocks are actually any good. They all tend to have the same issues - the adjusters dont adjust all of the damper curve, they dont do it in a very repeatable manner, they dont do it in a linear manner, they vary greatly from shock to shock etc etc. If you seach google under images for PSS9 damper curves and the shortcomings of the shocks you will dig aup a bit of chat. The Bilsteins are not alone in having issues. On the other hand a fixed damper can accomodate a good range of spring rates. The bottom line is: how many people get the damper curves with the dampers and understand enough to translate that to a better setup? Not many I would wager. Most people end up by screwing in too much damper force anyway and having a pretty horrible setup. Better off talking to proper suspension people and getting B46's re-valved if needed. -

I think people are (mistakenly) assuming the PSS9 valving is as good as the non adjustable Bilstein valving. It isnt. -
What, you were in a gifted students program too? The crux of it was that the (legitimate) protests by Gardner & many others were not in keeping with how the thing was done in Europe - which was not by the book by any means. Anyway a search dredged up this: Joe Saward, touring car writer for Autosport in Britain, found it all mildly amusing. "Hey, this isn't Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. There's a lot of money at stake here, and if Bathurst wants to lose the World Championship, it's going the right way about it." The inference was that the rules are a little more malleable in Europe. Everyone knows the score. Everyone knows how to play the game. Yet the dumb Aussies actually believe in the letter of the law. 87 was an interesting year, but I enjoyed 89 more after 88 broke my black heart.

Yeah well my view point on it is that he mostly just makes sht up. I got fed up with his pet agendas long ago - back when he used to write for Motorsport News. Hell I still havent forgiven him for what he wrote about the Texaco Sierras at Bathurst in 1987. Not that I hold a grudge, you understand.
-
False rumour #3: Joe Saward is JUST an independent journalist. Actually Joe Saward is just a muppet. If you disbelieve everything he writes you will be right pretty much all the time. Independent? Journalist? He fails massively on both counts.
-
Hmm, not sure. Last year he couldnt win a race (until it stopped mattering) because he couldnt deal with the tyres. This year it is because the car sucks the big one. Not sure that either makes for a happy driver. Also, just because Bieber has been rubbish so far is good as far as it goes but doesnt help as much as you would hope.

Dunno, lost count. Anyway as long as Williams & Ricciardo are going ok I can live with it.
-
Lets see: Pole positions: 0 Wins: 0 Podiums: 0 Championship position: 4th So, yeah, on track.

Well I take the view that it is simply too much to take on and, anyway, why the hell should it be up to car enthusiasts to fix? Why cant we be the same as any other bunch of sports people? I mean I dont see them building more soccer fields to stamp out soccer hooliganism. Or boxing rings to stop people down the pub punching on. Other sports dont get burdened with fixing societies ills, why should we? Its an easy fix. Just say no to HRT jackets. I would put across the point of view that any muppet who rips hektic single pegger skidz in his Commodore neither understands anything about cars nor is he the sort of person you would want anywhere near you on a race track. From my experience they are completely incapable of effectively competing in any events anyway.

What are you going to use for tops? They dont look to include them from the pictures. -
Whoever attends please keep this in mind. Hoons = idiots ripping skidz etc. Car enthusiast = people who do stuff properly eg track days etc. It is NOT the job of car enthusiasts to save anyone from hoons. So please dont advocate more facilities (or anything else) on the basis that it will lessen the instances of fkwittery on the roads.

Bonnet And Boot Rubber Stops R32 Gtr
djr81 replied to r32gtrv-spec's topic in Exterior & Interior Styling
No point looking at wrecked cars for the rubber parts. They have all perished and just snap off if you try & remove them. Try Nissan/rhdjapan. But it is likely to be ugly. -
Bilstein - Coilover Conversion
djr81 replied to simpletool's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
I changed my spring rates again as I wasnt totally happy with what I had. Went up another 25lb in rate front & rear. The setup is such a massive improvement over how it was with the Nissan tops it just isnt funny. I think I got about 30mm extra shock travel front & rear although the rears werent critical. -

I just bashed mine through with the new bush and a soft hammer. They pull up and align anyway when you tension the nut on the damper. -
How did you get on with this? Also, has anyone used these? You have to scroll down a bit. http://www.lewisengines.com.au/

Why the hell is everyone so keen on using old Lotus colours. Red & gold??? Where is the tobacco sponsorship? I mean really they shouldnt be allowed to have cigarette money only Ferrari can do that.

Hsd Hr Coilovers For R32 Gtr
djr81 replied to JD32R's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
Look, for an R32 R the unsprung weight over the fronts is about 400kg per tyre. So to trap/capture a spring (even an 8kg on) to the extent of having enough preload to affect it in bump means winding in up by 50mm from the point of starting to take up on the spring. Which isnt very likely. It is more likely he is checking on the spring length to see if it is long enough in the first place and therefore not bottoming. Anyway best answer is to buy some good springs/dampers & match them with some sway bars. Nismo use 5.5/4.5 kg/mm front and rear on their intro series and that is a pretty good set of numbers. -
Depending on your set up - oiled up AFM's will have that effect. If you are running a recirculation system for blow by gases and it is leaking oil out the bovs (common on GTR's) or you have re-oiled a foam air filter there is a fair chance the AFM's are messed up. This causes them to read high - the consequence being single digit AFR's, less ignition advance and no horsepowers. If you had it on the dyno what are the AFR's?

New Rims Don't Fit R32 Gtr
djr81 replied to zr200's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
Just about anything in a 17" will give you good clearance on stock callipers. It is just stupid rims with dish that fail. But then again they fail in every other respect so no surprise there. -
New Rims Don't Fit R32 Gtr
djr81 replied to zr200's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
Just cut your losses and get some rims that fit - proper size, proper offset & clearance for the brakes. Its not hard you just have to stop listening to the fitment people. The Sumitomo calliper is already pretty small as is the rotor it sits on. Arguably too small for the car anyway - so a yet smallet calliper is going to cost money & cause other issues. Better to spend it on good rims instead. -
I Have Always Wanted To Build An Ultima Or Caterham
djr81 replied to Roy's topic in Motorsport Discussion & Builds
The Birkins are pharken nice. There is a yellow one over this way (You may also have seen it at the Aus Super sprint championships)that goes well hard on the track. Worth looking at especially with all the carbon bling you can get on them.
