  1. I think you'll find the properties of SS are such that in situations of great temperature range, such as when bolted on the back of turbo's it has a tendency to become slightly more brittle than mild steel. Not to say it WILL crack. Most likley it wont. Alot of turbo rotary owners I know over here swear by mild steel on turbo dumps and so forth simply because they have constant cracking issues due to the amazing amount of heat that rote's put out. Anyway this is bound to start a shit fight, go with what your happy with. Im happy to use mild steel as are alot of people. Red17
  2. Ive also got the problem with my steering wheel. Good to know someone can retrim it cheaply. I love the standard wheel. I did have electrical tape on my boot due to my wing breaking but ive managed to fix the wing (the studs on one side were rusted through). It involved drilling two 12mm holes in the fibre glass and putting new bolts in, everything we tried just wouldnt work. This was the only realiable way. So now instead of having holes in the boot, ive got holes in the wing *sigh* Of course I dont have the standard GTST wing (which sucks)... my car is fitted with a full GTR kit. Lovely jubbly. Red17
  3. I recently got my dump done by Speedworks over here in Perth and they have a new supplier for their dump/front pipe combo's. Well priced and very well made. Available in stainless steel or mild. Email: glenn@speedworks.com.au Red17
  4. Just a quick word, if youve got one of these BOV's be aware they have a tendecy to jam over time if unlubricated. I had to disassemble mine this morning and found the plunger was stuck. Bit of silicon spray and a clean up later, all is good Red17
  5. Summoner, I know plenty of people who work at holden service centres who will disagree. The Gen3 in their opinion is a heap of junk (and these guys LOVE their holdens), they get endless customers complaining. Yet it doesnt seem to happen with holdens other motors. Sure theres probly alot that havent exhibited the problems. For one reason or another. Ill stop bagging HSV's when HSV owners stop bagging me. I know quite a few top blokes with commodores, but ive also come across some right assholes who deserve to be put in their place. Figure out which one of these categories you fit into enjo boy. Red17
  6. "Hey skaifie, is that the new Gen 3 commodore?" "The one with the noisy gudgeon pins?" "..and the excessive oil consumption?"
  7. You got a pic of them on a skyline? I like em, and im in Perth, but cash flow represents a problem at the moment. Red17
  8. Strich9ine, Nobody is saying Speed doesnt kill. Of course it does, drive at 140 into anything and you'll die, thats a fact. Im saying Speed is not a factor in a majority of all road accidents. And is not a factor in a majority of all fatal accidents. That is also A FACT! Theres a difference between saying speed kills and saying speed is the root cause of all accidents, which the government would have you believe. Red17
  9. Ive just done some examination of the road safety figures and discovered in all road accidents in the Year 2000 on WA roads the following was recorded: Speed was not a factor in 68% of all metro road accidents Speed was not a factor in 75% of all rural road accidents Speed was not a factor in 58% of all fatal road accidents 82% of all metro accidents occurred on straight roads 73% of all rural accidents occurred on straight roads 80% of all accidents occurred in dry conditions 75% of all accidents occurred in daylight I could go on and on all night. Now aside from the fact that clearly most accidents are not caused by speed. Why the hell are we having most accidents on dry, straight, during the day? Theres some interesting reading, check em all out at: http://www.officeofroadsafety.wa.gov.au/Re...0/contents.html Red17
  10. Ok a few things to cover in this post. Firstly, whats this crap about cops wanting to be able to confiscate vehicles for 6 months and be impounded at the owners expense? I can see that law being abused just as much as the laws surround defect notices currently are. Good on ya WA police. Its enough for me to install cameras in my car along with a datalogging system to ensure my car isnt impounded just because a cop doesnt like the look of me. Secondly, this story in the west: http://www.thewest.com.au/20030422/news/la...e-sto95554.html Now its an awful shame to see people die of the easter break and we all know driver education could really do with some serious work in this state. And lets face , the accidents are usually down to poor education or sheer incompetence/stupidity. But for the police minister in the final paragraph of that story to blame uneducated drivers for deaths is a bit irresponsible. After all arent the police and transport dept the ones responsible for handing out the education? If a driver is not sufficently educated, why is he/she on the road? How can the police commissioner blame driver education when the entire police force is run under a "Fine first, educate later" policy? Thirdly, and certainly not least important: http://www.thewest.com.au/20030422/news/la...e-sto95585.html I find it hilarious to think that 40 percent of all drivers want more speed cameras on our roads. Who did they survey? The local old peoples home? So were the worst speeders in the country! Not a big surprise there. But our main reason for NOT speeding is fear of being fined. Not fear of DYING! Surely this comes back to lack of driver education? Reducing speed limits, double demerits, more cameras is not the bloody answer! EDUCATION IS! Making it more difficult to get a drivers licence until some genuine competence is shown. Thats enough of me ranting, what the hell do you lot think about all this? Flame me up baby! Red17
  11. Rob77, My 32 is boosting to 11.5psi (dropping back to about 10ish) now with the boost controller off. So essentially its running standard boost. Thats just from having a full exhaust system from the turbo to tip. Dump pipe made a HUGE diffrence to when the car comes on boost too. I suppose i could set my boost controller up for 12, but hey, its only .5psi. Besides, i think my HKS dinosaur boost controller has finally given up. It behaves very strangely. Red17
  12. Hi all, For those of you out there with R32's have you noticed the reference under the driver side sun visor about "SRS-Airbag" ? Now the rest of the note is in japanese so ive no idea what its referring to. But as far as i know the R32 doesnt come with an airbag? The steering wheel is in no way big enough to hold one for starters. Was it an option? Red17
  13. Hi all, Just a quick question I have about installing an aftermarket oil pressure gauge. Now ive picked up an apexi off someone cheap second hand, it matches my current boost gauge so i thought id get it. Problem is the sender is missing. Now does anyone know if I can connect this straight up to the standard oil pressure sender circuit without any issues? I presume the voltage being sent to the standard gauge would be similar or thereabouts to most aftermarket ones. Also does the oil pressure sender connect up to the small black box on the firewall next to the boost guage pressure input? Thanks Red17
  14. Mines now done 107,000 and its pulling like a train. I had a problem a while back with 2 exhaust valves burning but it was mainly due to previous owners mistreatment with too much boost. However when we pulled apart the head and bottom end to do the work we found the rest of the motor was in pristine condition, everything within spec. I think you'll find unless you severely mistreat a jap motor, most of them wont have any wear of significant value until you hit 150+. I had an SR20DE pulsar that had done 240,000 and still didnt burn oil and was just as quick as the day i bought it. Red17
  15. I heard it was 15 degrees for Autos and 20 degrees for manuals. Red17
  16. Ive now heard different opinions on what base timing for an RB20DET is. Ive heard 15 degree's 3 times, and 20 degree's twice. Which one is it????? I found the car keeps dying just trying to set it around the 15 degree mark, runs fine at 20. This makes me think the people stating its 20 degree's are correct. Red17
  17. http://www.silviawa.com/ Has a pretty active forum from guys in Perth and around oz. Some handy info there. Red17
  18. Percentages are a silly way of calculating it, For instance: 1000hp GTR Skyline would by your example have 300hp of drivetrain loss? Do you know how much heat that your claiming the gearbox is absorbing? The gearbox would melt, as would parts of the car. So the more i modify my car, the more i lower my gearbox efficency? Drivetrain losses are generally fairly constant. Sure they would vary according to certain factors like heat, but not by huge amounts. Drivetrain loss for an R32 GTSt ive seen listed as 38hp. It will vary in every car, so its difficult to determine exactly without pulling the motor out and engine dyno'ing it. Red17
  19. Shortcuts isnt necessarily the reason. I spoke to my compliancer about this very issue. He said the paperwork he recieves from canberra sometimes has it listed, sometimes it doesnt. A compliancer will only do what is listed as a requirement. Apparently the ADR papers vary not only in years of production but in MONTHS of production too. Its very strange. Red17
  20. Hi everyone, Ive been experiencing some issues over the past few days with my car ever since i turned on my HKS boost controller. Now ever since ive had the car, when you turn the controller on and set it to LOW, then its identical to driving the car with the controller OFF. eg: standard boost. But whilst driving the past few days its seemed like when on boost that the pressure the turbo is producing is all over the place, keeps spiking up and down even with constant throttle. So while trying to diagnose this problem (not even thinking it could be the EBC) i drop it into third at about 60 and watch the boost guage spike to 1.1bar. (Further tests since show it seems to be spiking around 0.9, only occasionally hitting 1.1). My reaction at this point was OH **** ive been driving around for a week on 1.1 bar! Instantly I reach for the glovebox and turn off the controller. Do the same test again, 0.7bar, standard boost. Hmmm ok. Now considering ive never adjust or messed with my boost controller since getting the car. Why the hell is it now producing what ever boost it feels like depending on the wind direction or what mood its in? The model in question is a HKS EVC 1... a dinosaur as far as boost controllers go. Its a bit scary when you cant rely on your boost controller to limit boost like its meant to. I only wish id noticed it sooner, hopefully I havent done any damage. Anyone else experienced this? Is it a fauly pressure switch or something? Red17
  21. Why do people persist on getting high flow air filters for the purpose of trying to gain miniscule amounts of horsepower. Personally, id rather a filter that actually stops dirt from entering my motor, rather than having a whopping 2hp more. The exact reason i flogged my HKS foamie off to some unsuspecting sod and replaced it with a K&N. "High Flow" is merely a buzz word for "doesnt stop half the shit its meant to". Red17
  22. I recently got my dump pipe done and its been a fantastic improvement. I went with a single pipe with a really wide opening at the top. Having had a look at the standard pipe its obvious how much better this is. The stock one on the 32 has a cast iron flat section just about blocking the wastegate area off... its horrible. A larger single pipe is probably enough for most people. And theres little guarantee it will be better if you buy one with a separate wastegate pipe. This is because it may rejoin too early or too late causing similar turbulence issues within the system. You'll see improvements either way, however the difference between the 2 styles of dump pipes probably cant be felt on an arse dyno (only a real one). Red17
  23. I dont know what theyre like to do on R33's but the 300ZX ones are an absolute bastard to get to. You have to take the entire dash out to get to it. Took my mates workshop a day and a half to do the job, nearly $800 in labour. If you REALLY want your heater to work then id say try and do it yourself. Anywhere you take it is going to charge quite a bit in labour to do the job. I presume its the heater core your talking about right? Its leaking water inside the cabin? and thus causing the car to overheat? Red17
  24. Ive found whilst rim shopping that 8 front and 9 inch rear combinations seem to be quite common in offsets for skylines. Personally I wouldnt got 9's on the front. Red17
  25. Im sorry, skylines have batteries in the boot? Every 32 or 33 ive seen under the bonnet of has had it in the engine bay. Red17
