  1. Birds is spot on That girl Verity is a novice, it was her first comp, not sure she has done too much training I like this girl, Inez. It was her first comp too, she has joined PTC Perth. This is strong
  2. Heres the issue. You say this burns fat Someone quotes you Then we have people saying they are confused with info out there. Why is there confusion, its very basic stuff I believe in accuracy, its my job were discussing. Its like when someone lifting a weight thinks hes building muscle, quite the opposite Birds, Eric Marocher owns that gym, met him in 2010 in Idaho, lovely guy, his wife is Dawn, the strong bencher They are both teachers and run the gym in the evening, funded by the lifters. They cant run it as a business because of an assortment of shit like medical cover. If they had to pay there own, it would cost them $40,000pa (kids)
  3. But elite athletes are actually trying to minimise energy expenditure by becoming more efficient, the exact opposite to Joe Blow in the gym. No exercise burns fat, none, they all burn calories. Imagine if there was actually an exercise that burnt fat People would be dying and it would be outlawed.
  4. High end cyclists arent doing cardio, nor are they riding to burn fat, quite the opposite They are participating in a sport That, I feel is where most go wrong There is a reason why gym lifters NEVER make the same progress as those that compete I'm living proof, I speak from experience
  5. Now thats Martin at 80kg, he cut to make weight for a comp, dropped about 3-4kg. He is now moving up to the 90kg class, is around 88kg at the moment
  6. A healthy heart is very important, for everyone. Problem is, 90% of people who think they are doing exercise for the heart, are not. We just had the Pacific Ironman event or whatever its called in Frankston in March, they literally close Frankston down for the day Anyway, a competitor from Austria who flew out for the event asked if he could train at PTC in the lead up. I dont know why, nothing I can do to help a guy whose event lasts a day. Anyway, I expected this guy to be freaky fit, what a disappointment. He honestly couldnt get through my beginners workout, yet had no problem running, riding and swimming for over 10 hours. High rep squats had him breathing like a freight train. I found this with the footballers I trained. So my point is, exercise for the heart etc is not walking or jogging only, its hard work. The heart is a muscle, most forget that Those that do cardio for fat loss are just ill informed. I get clients every week wanting to join, asking about cardio and sit ups, serious. I keep a pic on file to show them of a client who has never done direct ab work and sure as hell has never done cardio, not even a KB circuit
  7. Amy Hapgood is their best female lifter, she used to Crossfit but now powerlifts
  8. Their novice comps are very, very friendly
  9. Leesh, PTC Perth in Malaga is an incredible gym. Paul and Dan are 2 of the nicest guys you could meet in this game. They are only a year old so most of their lifters are novices, but they do have a handful of strongish guys and girls. It is not expensive to get a little coaching there, its not like a commercial gym, I cant recommend you go see them enough, even if its just once a blue moon for a check up on technique and to get some reassurance I think they only have around 10 competing powerlifters there, 2-3 are girls, the rest are just like you, working hard to improve
  10. Nina has always eaten clean. She'd never been to Maccas till she met me. We actually upped her calories, she has very little rice, no pasta, very little bread, loves sweet potatoes She's been like that for 30 years, except for the booze when she was younger lol Birds, it took 19 years for Nina to listen to me, you and Leesh have a way to go
  11. Thats 1% of what they do, the rest of the time they try and lift heavier in the squat, bench and deadlift Sound familiar?
  12. When someone tells me they run, or box, walk, whatever, I ask them why they do it. If they say because they love it or enjoy it, I tell them to keep going. If they say to get leaner, I stop them. It won't help, it makes it worse Firstly, you should do what you love doing, no pointing being lean if your unhappy. Nina was unhappy because she wasnt lean. Whats a powerlifter in your mind Leesh?
  13. Okay. In 2007 Nina was very unhappy with the way she looked. She was running 4 -6 x week, between 5-7km each day, lifting weights like most on here do, nothing specific. So she asked for help.........finally, we had been together since 1988, only took 19 years. I told her to enter a powerlifting meet. She was perplexed. She had never done any powerlifting specific training. I explained if she entered a comp, paid her fee and committed she would work much harder. She agreed only if I would train her. I agreed only if she did EVERYTHING I said. Done. First thing, stop running. She weighed 63kg at 164cm. She was confused, she was going to lift in the 60kg class, how would she lose the weight without running. Weigh in on comp day, Nina is 57kg, not one cardio session, no running, just very heavy max effort lifting for around 8 weeks. Most dont know this about Nina but she would much rather run than lift weights. She is poorly suited to powerlifting, she is successful because she is determined, not talented. The reason she powerlifts is because of how lean it keeps her. Last time she had her body fat % measured it was 12%. Only Max measured leaner in our gym back then. The numbers are irrelevant, she is very lean, hasnt run for 6 years, might do a kettlebell circuit every 3 months. She is strict with food intake 90% of the time, very high protein diet, every meal. Any exercise that doesnt contribute to the body getting into an anabolic state is forcing the body into a catabolic state. There is no neutral ground. Now ALL exercise is catabolic, but heavy weight training produces an anabolic state, "cardio" does not Anabolic build muscle, muscle burns fat Catabolic wastes muscle lowers basic metabolic rate Nina had been doing cardio based exercise since she was 17, 1981, followed Pritikin diet, health nut. When she started PL she finally looked like one. Hope this helps Leesh If you want to talk to Nina directly she is on Facebook, very friendly and helpful
  14. This is only for Leesh. Cardio will make you fat. Fat is not scale weight, which is what everyone is talking about, I mean adipose tissue. Start using your eyes instead of scales when chasing body recomposition. Listen to those you trust and ask them to be honest about your condition (Birds), and ignore everyone else. Doing a good progressive resistance training program and making smart food choices for 90% of your meals will take you further than anything else you can do. There is no secret.
  15. How do you know leesh?
  16. Dan does, he is very tight in the hips, yet can kick over anyones head (2 x World Kickboxing Champ). Very flexible, yet lacks mobility in the hips. Mobility World seems to be the best site for that stuff, has some very good information on there
  17. Flexibility and squat depth is irrelevant. Max cant touch his toes, squats deeper than anyone here Its mobility you should be looking at No one here stretches, but most do mobility exercises, although Max and Martin don't. What they do do is perform every rep of every set to its correct range of motion, even warm ups with empty bars Just food for thought

  19. Good to hear youre still training Ali
  20. Bozdos, where is your local powerlifting club and where do they compete
  21. Closer to home, Martin, powerlifter, squats 250kg, benches 160kg, deadlifts 290kg. I hope you guys that think powerlifters are fat are leaner OR stronger than him
  22. I hate the notion the PL are fat. How many of you even know a competing powerlifter This is the best powerlifter in the world today, maybe ever
  23. I have well over 100 clients and 25 compete in PL, what about the others? Protein powder is absolutely a supplement, in no way is it food, it can be used as a food replacement, but its not food,it hasnt got a chance in hell as being as good as steak. The truth is most are too lazy to prepare 6-8 meals a day, so its convenient, simple as that, and like I said earlier, there is no shortcut to any place worthwhile. Birds won a DL comp at his gym deadlifting 1.5 x bw for some reps, I bet most people at that gym take supplements. So Bird is the strongest there, and I have 4 girls here who could beat him at that lift, what does that say about the rest of the lifters at that gym? That is not a slight on Birds, he knows how strong our girls are, but it is a slight on mainstream gym members, and their "knowledge" on most things weight related, like the comment that protein powder is food. Now Bozdos, I'm not sure what you do for a job, lets say your a cabinet maker, if some clown was telling you sticky tape was as good as nails, its still a fastener, would you respond? Now you know how I feel
