The car was tuned correctly when it first was built (when it did alot of km's as well being a daily driver then). The problem crept up when I added on parts that would alter the AFR's and never got it retuned properly, just patch up jobs here and there, and as an end result it ran stupidly rich on boost. The AFR's on boost were low 11's, and for one small part of the map dipped into the high 10's. Aside from that, cruise was never worse than 14.0:1. Im going to stop being a slacker and get it properly tuned (map wiped and start from scratch) when its back together.

Ferni, dont run octane booster, it does the same thing

Slightly off topic, but does water injection help to keep pistons clean?

I know in an old engine that I blew a head gasket on years ago, the one cylinder where water entered had a very clean piston, whereas the others were all carboned.

Yeah if your careful, you can suck small amount of water in with manifold vacuum (use a few revs for a while) and it will clean the pistons more then you would think it would.

Otherwise get something like suburu upper cylinder cleaner, designed specifically for this purpose (highly recommended by many people) and works better then water alone.

old topic, I know.

When you pull an engine down, the condition of the bore can not be determined by hone marks. Its a common misconception!

The way manufacturers hone their engines, you will see hone marks at over 200,000klm. Im sure some people with that sort of mileage will strongly agree.

The only way to determine the condition of the bore is by measuring it at several different levels as this give you a much better idea of the distortion of the bore. You will often find more wear in the middle of the bore then at the top 1/4 and bottom 1/4. Not only wear but distortion where the bore is oval- this leaks compression as the piston powers through the combustion phase and as it reaches Bottom of the bore.

On some of the better engines, you will often find that bores are machined, honed and measured with a dummy head fitted to account for block distortion when the head is torqued up. Its mainly used on more serious engines as the results of a few thou and insignificant on a road engine.

Lastly, excessive carbon on the top of the piston is unlikely to cause pre ignition on boost. If your mixtures are consistently running that rich on boost- The amount of fuel that the engine is seeing keeps the combustion temps low enough so that the carbon wont cause pre ignition. Im not saying that it is good to run AFR's this rich, im just saying it is safer. I personally would rather run 11.5 AFR on boost then 12:1 on a track day. Yes, the leaner mixture will make up for some power, maybe 5% difference at this level but at 11.5 the engine will run cooler, combustion will be cooler and there is less chance of melting engine internals when your running full throttle for 10-15 min stints 5-6 times in a day.IMO I would rather drop 5% power but be sure to drive the car home.

hmmmm the run in should be done on a dyno and do NOT baby it... 50km on mineral run in oil at 5-7k revs loading it up!

just warm the oil up to the 90c mark with a warm up idle and roll on the dyno first....

drop the oil after the 50km on the dyno, and then repeat with semi syn. oil for another 50km medium to high revs/ load....

then your top wack oil i.e 300v or castrol 10w/60

no more run in required and will have an engine with more power and long life!

yes Im sure there will be controversy over this but it is true

I'm with you on this one maybe not right up to 7k at first though. I usually put 20kw load on and accellerate through to 3/4 of the rev limter max and then decel, then reapeat about 5 times and then double the load and do the same thing and then double the load again. If you engine isn't run in, in the first 500k's then it will probably never be run in. I'm sure this will get some controversy as well!!!

    • Seat of the pants assessment of the new intake: The car is way less "doughy" when hitting the loud pedal, especially off idle when stopped or in traffic, I did use a cheapo lazer thermal thingo to measure the temp around where the pod filter got its air, it was between 55 - 60°C, in saying this the car was shut off and not moving, so the OEM intake pipe was not supplying any fresh air to where the pod was when the car was at least moving A weird bonus was induction noise on the throttle in the cabin increased a bit,  I was worried that I was actually going to lose some of that induction noise I love so much, outside though, when I got the daughter to do a WOT drive by pass for me, the induction noise has increased alot when on the throttle, not quite ITB doort, but well up there I'm extremely happy with the results and have been exploring the country roads in the region  As for house mods: 1.New front fence is up and is awesome, it really upgraded how the joint looks from the street, and the added security is nice 2. Electricians have replace some interior lights, and with more lighting in the garage, a few new motion detecting lights out the front above the garage, front room, and at the front door, which I have already found heaps helpful coming and going, also now has fancy pants CCTV all round the house The only hold point for power though is the solar and batteries due to supply issues, although this will happen over the next few weeks 3. I have done a heap of landscaping out the front and I'm almost ready to do a new small retaining wall with some nice blocks to replace the brick and cemented in rocks around the raised garden beds cemented in river stone "was the fashion at the time" the house was built. I currently have a pallet of retaining wall blocks and 2 bulka bags of 20mm blue metal to replace the wood chip that is in the raised garden beds around the house 4. I now have 3 big raised garden beds for out the back to grow some vegetables, about 70cm high, 200cm long and 100cm wide 5. My 2 compost bins are already pretty full with brown, green and kitchen waste from the landscaping I'vedone so far, but they will probably take a few months to break down, so anything else that gets chopped, trimmed, and kitchen waste will just start filling the base of the raised garden beds to about 30cm before I start throwing 40cm of good compost, and stuff, for the vegetables to grow in, I'll need a few ton of compost and soil, but the local supplier can sent me bulka bags of the stuff Basically the logs, wood chips and a few strategically placed rocks for drainage, will give the beds some good organic materials down low to break down over time, and they will hold moisture during the warmer months to save the water in my big arse water tank if we don't get alot of rain So, all in all, the car and house mods are going well, and I'm really enjoying being retired, I sleep in too 0700 and slowly plod around inside until I feel like actually doing anything, and only work in the yard for as long as want, which has actually been alot over the last few weeks,  although when you look at it, it seems that not a huge amount of work has been done,  until I look at the before I started the work pics Happy days and good times indeed
    • hahaha yeah. Plan is to get side skirts and probably just rear pods. But going to do them one-by-one. I've got a set that I really like from RHDJapen, but that one isn't shipped to AU. So need to find someone who can get it for me
    • Here's an idea, answer the questions I asked you as they are trying to work out WHY the LSD will be binding up in a straight line.
    • You haven't driven many modern cars then have you? Most of them have sfa steering feel with their stupid electric bullshit steering systems.
