whats your opinions people.

a turbo exhuast housing bag or a metal cover over the top?

whats the good and bad points of each?

hks turbo cover is like $180, the turbo bags im unsure.

ive been told the turbo bags make the turbo have more thermal stress and wear out quicker?

dont wanna wreck my brand new $3400 turbo anytime soon :confused:

I would say the turbobag would be better because it seals off the housing's heat better than a sheild can do.

Although personally I would take off the turbine housing and get it ceramically coated too, as an internal coating helps keeps the heat out of the metal in the first place. (I would also do the manifold while you're at it!!)

Heavily vented bonnet works best for getting rid of heat :)

If its plastic surround componants you want to save then the turbo bag is the best.

If its the turbo you want to save before but still want to help keep the heat near the turbo then the heat sheild is the way.

anyone know shops who are selling the hks metal cover? or even some plain ones for a more reasonable price? or i might just make one up myself :(

i'd like some vents for the pod and turbo area but the cops wont like it at all, and the rain is an issue :) plus stagea bonnet r not easy to find second hand if i gotta get it back to stock, and i'd prefer the sleeper look.

yeah im not sure about the bag but i think the chrome cover is just for looks...but i have to say the HKS cover would look damn hotl... specialy on the T04Z

i took the cheap option and got a chrome cover from autobahn that was meant for an air filter and bolted it into place.....but then again i have the dump wraped and a vented carbon bonnet for my HKS T04S..my cover gets damn hot after a flog

ok ive been chasing prices on the metal heat sheilds and local hks distributor in WA wants $280 for one thats suits a hks T51 turbo and needs modifying, hahah good value :)

over east rang bd4s and they want $270 as well, for a pissy piece of metal and a bracket.

gcg want $220 for a plain non branded one

perfect run emailed and reckons hks japan dont even have them anymore :)

nengun is like $180 i think, just i need it within the next 2 weeks and nengun take forever.

might have to make one up until i get the hks one.

are they ally or stainless steel?

how far off the actual housing do they sit? 10mm? 20mm? or what?

i have heard rumors of heat bags trapping too much heat in and causing the turbine seal to leak prematurley. we run heat bags on some of our engines at work which range from 6ltr inline 6 single turbo to 69ltr V16 quad turbo's, but these are desiel hahaha.

from my experiance on desiels the non bagged ones last longer.

just some input, hope i dont confuse you.

Putting a Bag on it will heat cycle it ALOT more as you're containing the heat. A heat shield would be the way to go as it let's the heat dissapate, though wouldn't decrease overall underbonnet temps as much as a bag.

Any sort of steel will do. SS would be best for looks - just don't go too thick so that it can loose the heat quickly otherwise you'll end up with heat storage in the shield..

Just get a sheet of 2mm SS, make a bracket and bend the SS to suit. $180 is crazy pricing - let alone more..

i got a turbo bag on mine and i rekon it shits on a heat shield

there was a test in hpi magazine not long ago also stating this, and u can also get a dump pipe bag which they said had great results,

the bag traps alot more heat in and i personally cant see it doing any damage, ive had mine along with alot of mates have theres for 1000's of kms and nothin wrong at all

plus with the heat shield my air con and surrounding plastics were melting

I reckon the bag is better because the turbo will cool down slower than an a fully exposed one.. therefore the cooling stress on the metal is less. Although one could argue that a 'bagged' turbo will heat up faster...

Its a catch 22. In the one hand i like the bags as they are far more effeicient at insulating the emgine bay from the heat.

But, my main concern with this is it traps the heat around the cartridge. Even if the thing is water cooled i dont like the idea of holding all that heat around the cartridge.

So i thin the best solution is a stainless shield over the exhaust housing (combined with HPC coating the exhaust housing). Racepace in melbourne have about the best type i have seen as the cover actaully saddles the cartridge and acts as a kind of partition...its the way to go

u can raise the back of the bonnet up a bit if u want.

take off bonnet and put some washers on em to act like spacers and raise is 5-10mm doesnt look too different and dramatically realeses heat from the RB26 lol. i would put a shield around ur ABS actuators and a turbo bag. and shield ur exhast.

the bonnet idea is a good one, though my mate did it to his mz20 soarer and every car that he pulls up next to at lights tell him he has left his bonnet up haha.

the water on turbo is more of an issue if its boiling hot after a big thrash and then suddenly water hits it it changes temperature soo quick (immediately almost) that it shrinks and ive heard problems of cracking the housings though i dont know how true that is :confused:

the heat bag issue as roy has said is exactly what my point was about the bags being too efficient and not letting the air circulate at all. i'd imagine the turbo getting more than twice as hot as one without a bag on it.

whats these racepace ones worth? might give em a call tommorow, does anyone have a contact number and dont forget the state phone number first as im unsure which state they are in.

    • A few small updates since the previous post and lessons. I decided to do a little interior light upgrade on the 110. I quite like the iilumo items, even if they're a bit of a premium over other brands. You'll also note the Stedi Fogs, that will go into the S15 fog lights as I needed to match the bulbs since I got the new ones earlier. I hope they fit as the body is quite a bit longer than your normal bulb.  Annoyingly, I managed to trip the fuse, which normally wouldn't be an issue until I located the fuse. I can't say I've ever come across this. I had lucked out that someone nearby had a spare, but oddly enough Toyota dealerships seem to keep this in stock. I ordered some to keep in my stash and as luck would have it, someone else nearby tripped the same fuse so I passed on the favour.  I also did a little service on the 110 ahead of some additional work coming up. It's been annoying that Goleby's stopped carrying this particular HKS filter for the 110, so now I need to keep them on order from Japan. I also took the opportunity to install a bash plate and number plate riser. The plate riser is such a cheap but nice fix to help really tidy up the car. I'm tempted to now also replace my headlights, on this car. Both items were from Project Aero.    I also needed to replace the rear tyres on the 110, and after trying to get it aligned learnt that I need to replace some bushes in the front end, so that's next.  Closing out this update with a nicer picture as always!

    • Appreciate the correction on the "ground", that will make a huge difference to looking at this. That makes complete sense about AF70/AF71 which is what I had come down to being the issue, one of these. I'll have another look in the ignition wiring when I get a chance next week. I'll also make up a jumper wire for running that AF73 test.  ECU is fine, relay itself is fine, pump harness is fine and the pump itself is fine. I am going to upgrade the Walbro 255 anyway with a DW300 I have since I need to replace the fuel sender and I'm going to upgrade the FPR with my chasebays kit ready for new plenum/injectors/dbw, but I'll get this working first. That's why this is so frustrating.
