Okay,

Here's the story... I busted something, what I believe is a turbo gasket/manifold thinggy.

First of all I blew an intercooler pipe (the one right up near the throttle body) which basically just loosened and sat there, it didn't pop off anywhere....

I heard a funny sound so I limped it home.

This caused intake oil to be sprayed all over the goddam place, down the intake pipes, on the rocker cover, even reaching the opposite strut tower. The place was a mess.

Now I also have a funny "exhaust leak" (well, that's what it sounds like anyway) coming from around the turbo area. I pulled it all off last night (no sick connotations pls) and didn't see anything physically wrong with the turbo, everything looks norm.

Of course in doing this I rounded two nuts off the bloody heatshield cover (the ones closest to the firewall that get really hot), lucky i still have the other 3 holding it on.

So the next step i think would be to take off the turbo manifold heatshield and take a look under there to see what I can see. Who knows, maybe it's just the gasket between the turbo and the manifold (common fault I hear)

My question is, what else could it be ? And where would I goto get such a thing fixed? Do i take off the part and bring it to someone or what ?

Any help would be great guys.... but for now my car is off the road and I'm not risking driving it until it's fixed. Probably won't be at the cruise on sunday. grrr!

Back to the Accent we go.....

-Kym.

if it is the turbo exhaust gasket that has blown kym that is a bitch. remember that happened to gary's car when he first got it.

unfotunatly from what he was told. he was lucky he was still under warranty bcause it is rather expensive to fix. maybe hopefully someone here will be able to help u though and it wont xost too much money

good luck man.

Psiker

P.S still come on the crooz. just car whore like me

Kym,

You can get a lift with one of us for the cruise, it wouldn't be the same without you.

As far as your car goes, I don't mind having a look at it, then giving you some advice on who to fix it. If you want me to have a look at it then call me on 0422 972 195 and I'll try and help.

See'ya:burnout:

yay! heavy-handed goons to the rescue! thanks guys... as I found out last night, getting the turbo off could be quite hard...

while ive got everything else off, i might clean my IC and install a proper catch can methinks.... ho hummm...

right now my car is sitting in the garage having a nap.... *sigh*

Strich9 if you guys are gunna take it off, you should know how to put the gasket and turb back on.

There are a few tricks tho to remember, i can give you a hand as well if u want,

I would say bring it over but ive my turbo to take back off and adams in the next few weeks

Turbo/Exhaust gaskets are pretty common from what I've heard too, but not too difficult to fix either, just a matter of putting the time aside for it.

One question for you though Kym..is that gear oil any good because I've never used it before, I was gonna give Redline a go next but the only deterrant is the price.

I'm always open to suggestions btw.

Personally, I would take it to a decent workshop or mechanic, get him to fix it and then DONT ****ING TOUCH SHIT YOU DONT KNOW ABOUT! :) I'm no good with my hands and I'm certainly no mechanic, I dont even attempt to change my oil myself (even though its piss easy and I should, but I know if I do I'll **** something up and it'll cost me more money). I think its time you stopped touching things and left it to people who know what they are doing :)

Heheh, with heavy goons like Bully and Got Boost to help me on the saturday It all made light work!

Thanks VERY MUCH for your help guys! Much appreciated.

The fault WAS the turbo gasket, dead simple to fix really, just time to do it was a pain. Lucky sean had a few spare lying around.

Im always amazed at the amount of people willing to help when something stuff up on someone's car. You guys all rock!

    • Hi everyone, I've been wrestling with this for a while now and have been trying to find out the cause. For context, the turbos used are Garrett 2860 -5s, the BOV is a BNR32 HKS SSQV IV kit, the car is currently tuned to ~470 whp on 17.5 psi. The car drives normally, pulls well when it doesn't happen, and I can replicate it fairly easily. It does not sound like turbo shuffle or flutter. The engine has only a thousand or so miles and has had this behavior since it was completed. After my engine was built for my R32 GTR, I noticed that the car now sometimes makes an air discharge sound on what appears to be positive boost pressure that sounds really similar to a BOV. I had thought that it was a BOV issue but even when replacing it with a brand new unit, the sound persisted. It seems like it's coming from the passenger side but I may be mistaken. The closest scenario I could find was this post here https://www.gtr.co.uk/threads/maybe-a-boost-leak-opinions.147955/https://www.gtr.co.uk/threads/maybe-a-boost-leak-opinions.147955/ started by @yakshii and it sounds very similar. As in, at partial throttle once I reach positive boost I begin to hear the same psh psh psh psh psh sound like air is leaking somewhere when I keep the throttle in the same position. It most commonly happens in 4th gear at around 3-3.5k RPM and 5th gear around 2.5-3k RPM, which seems to coincide with normal positive boost thresholds. It might be similar to what @Austrian GTR mentioned about his own HKS SSQV. Notable difference would be that when he applies more throttle when it happens, it stops. In my scenario if I apply more throttle during this repeated psh psh psh sound, the cadence of the sound gets faster and louder rather than stopping. If I lift off slightly and apply throttle again, it will normally stop and pull without issue. I've checked all rubber couplers to ensure that they are tight, but have not gotten the opportunity to properly do a pressurized boost leak test. If anyone has had similar experiences or thoughts on what might be the cause, I'd be very keen to hear them. I also have a video of it happening from inside the cabin, if that would make it easier to understand: https://youtu.be/2zqZXcx8jbA
    • I'd want at least $40K for mine, but thats easy to say cos I'm not selling anyway.
    • That's incorrect. We have 4 seasons, consisting of pre winter, winter, post winter and a small glimpse of hope!
