Hi all , have any of you mounted an external wastegate down close to the engine pipe rather than up on your manifold away from disapproving eyes ? I was thinking this would look a bit less agro but still work as it should . The problems may be supporting the weight of the gate and dealing with different expansion rates of main and gate outlet pipoes . A friend once suggested using a smallish exhaust pipe flex joint to give it room to expand and contract - sort of a soft point .

I've no idea how cuddly a single turbo R32 GTST is down around where the 3" engine pipe would go but is there any chance of it fitting ?

Also have an old Turbonetics catalog that shows a "Deltagate Maxima" which is basically a throttle valve in a piece of pipe with V band fittings . It has a diaphram on the side with a sort of short rod integral actuator style linkage . If it does weigh 3lbs and is not too huge it could work in this situation .

Any feedback appreciated , thanks Adrian .

What type of manifold were you considering (high/low)? It's pretty tight in the back corner of the engine bay but if you mount the turbo high you will have a heap of room.

Even mounted low and forward as far as possible there is a reasonable amount of space behind the exhaust housing. I think the biggest issue would be making sure the turbo isn't mounted in the centre of the available space but over tight to the block as well (or even angled slightly to bring the exhaust in closer to the block). You would then have room to loop the wastegate pipe around between the front pipe and the inner guard and mount the wastegate right down low and upside down with the outlet pointing straight at the back of the car.

Alternately, mount the turbo out a bit with the wastegate pipe tucked in close to the block. That would also give you mounting options for additional supports.

mine sits way down near the cross member, with the outlet of the wastegate about 2 inches from the exhaust pipe.

not really a place thats hidden if you look under the car, but its plumbed back so not EPA illegal.

that looks really really low, suprised if it doesnt get ripped off from speedhumps, steep driveways.

mines the same but much more tucked in for more clearance, heres a pic...

yeah it looks it in that pic, but it is above the bottom of the exhaust as well as above the cross member.

have to see how the new WG fits.. the one in the pic is SHIT.. faulty and leaks/sticks ..

i can move it up higher if i want, depends on what WG i replace it with.

yer looking at it compared to my pic it doesnt look much lower, i think its the angle of the photo making it appear to hang way down.

cheers

Might not be the sort of thing you are after but this is a 35mm gate on a high mount manifold, RB20 R32. I just took the manifold off again but ill take a pic from underneath tomorrow when i get it back on.

Low mount and max 3" engine pipe .

Out of curiosity what size HKS gates are those and what tube size for the gate ? For the one that is plumbed back do you have expansion and contraction problems ?

Thanks A .

mines a 50mm hks gate, and the tube size is 2" :/

    • Thanks guys,  Yeah I should at least have them dynoed, at least then I know what I've got as a starting point.  The springs on these are hard as rocks. I vaguely remember Russman saying he was going to sell the shocks to me with the rocks fitted, as he was keeping the softer springs for his new setup.  I didn't click at the time but of course that was to let me know the shock/spring wouldn't be matched.  I also remember pricing up new springs around 2014-15, but, house, money etc. it never happened. So that was another reason to have them rebuilt. I have rebuilt the forks on many motorcycles so I think I could handle the seals on these easily enough, but getting the valving right would be a rabbit hole I cbf exploring.  Duncan, interesting to hear RP was tuning these back then. I might give them a call.  In the mean time I have been busy fitting sway bars. The Whiteline rear sway bar I purchased 15 years ago finally got fitted, along with the Whiteline front bar that showed up last week. Just waiting on new links for the front sway bar to finish that off.  And my spare set of advan AVS VS5's should be back from the powder coaters in a Pearl White finish sometime this week, with a set of Hankook RS4's lined up for fitting.  And then I just have all the suspension bushes to do. A comprehensive kit is on the way... Lots to do before the Ararat hill climb. Cheers guys 🍻
    • Nice car! I’m glad folks in the US have gotten past the FnF and are buying real cool cars like the 260RS I was with a bunch of mates in Portland about a year ago and spotted a green Stagea (just a regular 2.5T AWD) parked about 2 blocks away and they were like “a what?” So I made a bet with them for a round of beers and said “ok one of you run down there and tell me if the steering wheel is on the correct side” 5 mins later the American comes trudging back up the hill and goes “he’s right guys. Ok what beer do you want?”
    • Should replace OR drop the tank, give it's good clean. Might be worth replacing that entire fuel level/pump/cradle thing with this: https://frenchysperformancegarage.com/products/fpg-s13-180sx-r32gtst-single-pump-hanger-kit-billet-hat-6-v3-fpg-089?gQT=2
