Hey everyone.

Just spent the day doing Stage 2 advanced driving course with Ian Luff..

After going on the skidpan and doing some 2nd gear drift/skidpan driving my car suddenly developed a whine in 1/2/3 and prob 5 gear under load..

reving it in neutral causes it to "quietly" whine.. however in 1st and 2nd as soon as you put load on it, the gearbox sounds like i'm running a dog box, very loud and quite noticable..

Some possibilities that people suggested..

"gearbox oil has been cooked"..

"issue with the thrust bearing??"..

maybe something with the flywheel - this has arrisen from it being heard when reving with the clutch out..

car doesnt' do it on deceleration, or when i'm maintaining my speed, tends to be only when the gearbox is under load..

I'm going to take it to my mechanic tomorrow - but what do people suggest, maybe get the gearbox oil changed with some redline - ASAP?

Yeah pretty much doesn't make much noise.. nothing compared to the others..

spoke to some of the guys today at the Dyno day.. seem to have ruled out thrust bearing, and probably the main bearing..

What does it take to fix this? do I need to have the box reconditioned, or can they pull the gearbox down and replace that one bearing???

Thanks heaps for the reply.. i'm a bit worried, as it looks like i'll be paying around $1000 to get it all fixed..

its your input shaft bearing. they are a common problem with skylines and i dont think its that big of a deal for now. i wouldnt bother replacing it coz its gonna cost a shit load to take the box out and apart. as long as you dont go giving the box a really hard time everyday it will be right. just leave it until it gets worse then get it rebuilt or replace the box. i had that problem and the box lasted fine for a long time and it seems there are lots of others out there who have this problem and drive around for a long long time before doing anything (if they do at all).

-actually the only thing i would do for now is make sure u have enough oil/replace the oil in the box.

I'm getting the oil done on tues.. i'll get some "thickener" put through it or whatever the additive is they use..

it's pretty damn loud.. :/..

but I might just need to save my pennies and get it done at a later stage..

would it be better to take it to a "gearbox specialist" to find out how much and if they can isolate the issue further..

Well i'm not sure whether the r33 boxes have the same weaknesses but i only suggested the main shaft bearing because thats exactly the symptom and cause of my old r32 box, when i stripped it down to repair it the mainshaft bearing had all of 4 balls left in the race... :/

Sorry.. thought the input shaft and main shaft bearing were the same..

I think kwazza yours sounds like the same issue as mine.. where it whines in all the gears bar 4th..

can someone please explain to me what the whine exactly is?

also - how many bearings are there..

a thrust bearing near the cluth..

an input shafter bearing located ??

a main shaft bearing located i'm guessing on the main drive shaft that the 4th gear is directly fed..

also - kwazza how hard is it to change the main shaft bearing? what breaks in it to cause the whine? ball bearing come out??

I wouldnt recommend trying it unless you have the know how as you really need to get all your synchro clearances correct and make sure everything meshes correctly otherwise you'll end up with another screwed box a month down the track..

there are quite a few bearings in a gearbox, theres the main shaft bearings and counter shaft bearings, input shaft one plus a whole collection of needle rollers for each cog.

basically mine let go due to too much lateral forces on the bearing (full load up a hill in third for alittle too long), the bearing basically melted and most of the balls popped out the back of the cage.

the arrow points to where the bearing is that let go.

IF yours has the same problem i had, the whine is caused by too much lash on the gearsets due to the shaft wobbling around. :/

best to get someone to check it out though, take it to someone who knows thier nissan gearboxes.

that looks like a fair bit of work to replace that one as it's on the main shaft and dead center in the middle of the gearbox, i'm guessing they have to take almost everything off to get to it..

Next question - does anyone have someone in sydney they recommend???

Well I was doing 2nd gear skid pan work for a fair bit, which would a) generate alot of heat and b) put quite a bit of force on it, if it was letting go already that would be enough i'd say..

i'm guessing I need to get it check sooner rather than later..

For anyone interested..

Got my gearbox pulled down today..

Looks like the thrust bearing has infact gone.. grease everywhere in the housing that shouldn't be there..

Not sure why this occured.. maybe some water splashed into it..

Whining appears to have been caused by the lip of the bearing resting on the pressure plate "fingers" and causing it to spin while I accelerate..

Once apply pressure (pushing the clutch in) it seems to go away..

Anyways - getting it all put back together tomorrow.. hopefully everything will be a-ok..

Well $1000 later my problem is still around..

1) Thrust bearing was screwed..

2) Replaced Clutch - Thrust Bearing with a PBR RPM kit..

3) While getting fixed - a delivery ute backed into the front of my car.. now getting the bonnet redone - f**king son of a..

4) re greased my diff up - I doubt it's that..

5) I still think either a) the input shaft bearing is gone - or b) tailshaft bearing - i'm still going with a..

Anyways.. gonna see how it goes for 500k's.. see if the diff loosens up/quietens down..

anyways - thought i'd provide an update for people..

Youch!

i hate hearing dodgy workshop stories like that! better off to cut your losses and go straight to a transmission/gearbox specialist, even if its just to get them to have a quick look at it, should be able to tell straight away.

and the bearings in the box will quiten down when the clutch is in as it takes the load off them and stops the input shaft spinning.

hopefully it fixes itself :O

Have to wait and see..

I'll probably take it to a gearbox place in the next couple of weeks after i've done some km's in it to see if it fixes itself..

Chances are I don't think it'll happen.. but we can hope..

How can it be your diff if you can hear it when your not moving? (You said you can hear it when you're in neutral right?)... If so can't be your diff.

When you had the gearbox apart did you notice any wear marks on any of the teeth?

If the noise doesn't happen in 4th, that says to me it has to be something to do with the bottom shaft since 4th is straight thought and doesn't put load on it...

Its def not the diff - i'm aware of that.. and hence quite a bit pissed off and will have to take that up with the mechanic..

I still believe this issue is the input shaft bearing as in neutral while revving there is no load really on any of the gears as they aren't engaged.

I'm still weighing up my options - as well as cooling down a bit to re-think what it could be..

If its the input shaft bearings, i'm pretty sure you would hear it in 4th as well???

Even if it was something to do with the gears themselves and not the bearings, you'd still hear it in neutral without load, the load of turning the gears is enough to make a noise if somethings not right....

Out of interest - can you feel any vibration through your clutch pedal if you rest your foot on it while in neutral?

Ok just listened to that video.... does sound kinda like a bearing rather than a gear, but i'm no expert and its hard to tell without hearing in person :(

That's cool.. mechanic is pulling the box off again on tuesday - went up and saw him.. he's gonna pull it apart and find what the problem is.. which is schweet!

Might be something has just come out of balance - yeah I can feel a vibration - however that could be the new clutch + machined flywheel as it didnt' do that before..

Hopefully we'll be all sorted next week..

TLDR - recommended engine shops for RB rebuild.
    • Gday Thought it was about time I started a build thread! As expected this project has snowballed into a huge financial liability, but unless you’re strong willed and responsible, it’s not a surprise. Background -  My first turbo car was an R32 GTS-4, got my full license and then totalled my Au Falcon a week later, so while trying to sell my RMZ450 dirtbike to buy another car a bloke offered to swap the R32 which at the time I felt like I was ripped off but looking back and seeing prices of those now ($40kish) it was a good deal, I didn’t know enough about these cars to appreciate what I had so sold it before the RB20 blew up. Between here and there, out of 12 cars I’ve owned the note worthy ones are a V8 Lexus SC400 (soarer), a couple of XR6 Turbos and my beloved S15 which I had for about 3 years, picked it up for $12500, repairable write off but she was fine, gun metal grey/pewter and bone stock/unmolested until I got my hands on it. Ended up spending about the value of the car and 280kw, 2 demerit points by the time I got defected and sold it for $14500 (also $40kish in today’s market, rip) Fast forward to the present day, I’m in a much better position financially and daily an MQ Triton (great cars, pipe down Ranger Bois), I cruised marketplace and car sales for a few months looking for another R32, the best deal I could find was an absolute rust bucket half finished project for $12000, until this R33 popped up in Port Macquarie for $18k - unregistered and barely running but decent shape, kept an eye on it for a few weeks and the price steadily dropped, $16k then $15k then $14k, that was the point where I was like shit someone’s gonna snatch this up! It was owned by a young bloke who had big plans but him and his missus just had a baby so smartest move financially for them but big gain for me. So 2 days later I’m towing a car trailer to pick this thing up. Roughly 2 weeks and $3500 later I’m cruising around Newcastle in my beat up R33 all smiles and dose noises! It only needed some basic shit to get it going, coil packs and air flow meter, electrical stuff and all fluids changed, 158k kms and running pretty good, nice smooth engine after oil and coolant flush - when I say coolant I mean it had been filled up with tap water, every gallery and heater element was filled with rust, 8-9 flushes later and still had brown liquid coming out but she’ll be right. The car was painted R34 Bayside Blue at some point but whether it was a cheap job or just not looked after is anyone’s guess, clear coat flaking like sausage roll.  Was rethinking my choices and contemplating life, had it up for sale for $22k - still cheaper than any registered R33 but got little interest, next minute I had an opportunity at work - 6 months overseas for good money, so that was a no brainer, fast forward again and here we are with a 50% finished project. Current Mods - 200ish KW according to butt dyno Was tuned with Apexi PowerFC EBC (old school Greddy Profec)  Stock turbo (more shaft play than a Tinder date gone right) 3inch turbo back Varex muffler  Aftermarket injectors of mystery size, Power FC showed 36% duty cycle at full boost so not behd good size Someone had good intentions but stuck with the stock R33 MAF so we had misfires at 6000rpm due to the MAF hitting 5.2V So far I’ve redone the entire interior with carpet form Car Mats Direct, new Seats and steering wheel from Autotechnica, also sound system by Autobarn (mainly Kicker) Also MCA pro comfort coil overs - Hands down best purchase yet, worlds of improvement over the tired 30yrold shocks Goals - 450kw/600hp on flex tune New paint job - Midnight Purple 2 Engine is at the shop getting rebuilt with forged rods a pistons, new valves and springs, ATI Harmonic balancer, Aeroflow 7.5L sump, rear head drain and oil restrictors as per oil control thread* and cam covers modded for larger breathers, other stuff I can’t recall of the top of my head Parts purchased and to be installed once the engine is done -  Engine loom from Wiring Specialties including these options: Haltech Nexus S3 R35 Coil pack conversion  PRP Dual Trigger kit Fan controller  Other Parts -  262 Kelford Cams Turbo - Hypergear ATR43SS3-ProS with T51R mod (whistly boi) 6 boost manifold (high mount) 50mm Turbosmart Pro gate (plumbed back for legal reasons) HKS Super Turbo Exhaust with High Flow Cat Custom 3.5inch dump and front pipe 1500cc Bosch injectors  Fuel Pump walbro 525 Haltech MAP and IAT sensors Haltech Flex Sensor Fenix Radiator with dual thermo fans LS1 Alternator Kit Oil Filter Relocation from EFI solutions and Cooling pro oil cooler Many other things sitting in my garage waiting for that engine to come back.     • Losses have to be less with DC coupling. Provided the battery inverter has decent MPP tracking ability - which really shouldn't be a problem. It's not 2005 any more.
