I managed to get my car started after how many attempts (see thread 'R32 GTR starting problem'). still didnt know why it wouldnt start previously. i let it idle for a bit and noticed a really strong fuel smell from the exhaust. i let it idle for a bit and warm up, gave it a few revs and noticed it was blowing some fuel smoke. There was also a noticeably louder ticking noise. i brought it down the road and took it for a quick lap and i could feel the power kicking in and out. I pressure checked the fuel line and its OK. so is the fuel pump. i kinda have it summed down to either being the following:

>Crank Angle Sensor

>Gummy injectors(?)

>The ECU

>Spark Plugs

>The coil packs/Power Transistor or something electronially anyway, seeing that the car wasnt starting a few days ago.

I turned the car off, only to have it not start on me again just a few minutes later! The Exhaust Temp light is also flashing and i was told that it also doubles as a 'check engine' light. Would anyone have any ideas as to whats goin on? Has anyone ever had the same problem before? This is really ticking me off now, and im startin to lose the Skyline spirit. i think i should have stuck to my 180sx........ :P

now that you mentioned it, when i turn the key to "ON", there comes a slight noise that seems to be coming from one of the injectors. not sure if it usually does this, but still not too sure why its blowin smoke which seems to be unburnt fuel if it does have a stuck injector.....

anymore ideas? :

There is a good chance that the spark plugs are now fouled due to the motor turning over for an extended period without firing (the fuel injectors would be adding fuel during cranking which hasn't been burnt). I would suggest if it doesn't improve after a good drive (eg 50km) that you look elsewhere.

I would also suggest checking ECU diagnostics and I wouldn't be surprised if the Crank Angle Sensor (CAS) is the source of the original problem judging by your symptons.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Yep. I thought i would have to eventually check the ECU diagnostic system. I'll either bring it into a workshop which have the 'Nissan Consult' computer module or buy the program and adapter for my laptop. Cheers mate! I really should have given it more thought into buying the 32 GTR, being fairly old now and less reliable than newer cars.....

Still open for more ideas as to what the f__ck is goin on people!

could even be an AFM problem that triggers intermittently when the plug is jiggled by bumps in the road, or even the unit itself has decided its had enough.

This will make the mixture very rich when the AFM isnt reading correctly and black smoke will blow from all the fuel being burnt. This increase in fuel corresponds with you saying that the car lacks power when it happens. Also, the exhaust light comes on which means the cat is getting very hot and is prone to melting due to the unburnt fuel being burnt in the exhaust.

Yeah, the exhaust temp flashes. It flashes even when i turn the key to 'On'. Havent been able to start the car yet so i dont think it would be flashing if the exhaust is hot :D I will check the AFM though and the sparkies as well. Does anyone actually think it could be the spark plugs?

Got some of the fault codes from "The Sky Is The Limit" pdf. tells you how to check codes with ECU by turning this screw on the side. theres all this other handy stuff for the Skyline too. sounds pretty straightforward. Ive heard of another method where you can bridge these two terminals in the plug for the Nissan Consult module using a paper clip or bit of wire. Has anyone done either of these methods?

Okay, apparently the ECU's LED will mirror the dash light. Putting the key in the ignition the lights were flashing on the ECU and the dash already. I turned the screw clockwise then counterclockwise but they still mirror each other, so i assume its already in mode 2 to check diagnostics. I think what im getting is either "11" or "22". Im pretty sure 22 isnt a code at all :P . i have a feeling that i aint doin it right. I read the GTR manual and it seems gobbledygook to me. Has anyone actually done this manually without using a Consult?

Thanks mate, but im all the way north. Northern Territory :P ! i think i might buy myself the consult cable too. Too hard tryin to read the flashing LED on the ECU and dash, cant decipher whether its flashin one code or another, then it seems like its not flashing too quick or slow lol :P

old thread now this one is, but car still aint runnin. Have no cash being a poor ass uni student. It starts up but when i put my foot down it splutters and misses and still blows fuel smoke. I replaced the PTU/igniter but still running like the proverbial. a freind came round with tools and checked the spark plugs, and they were coated in soot, that being obvious as its blowing smoke.

What should i actually be looking at? The CAS, AFM's, something to do with ignition, paris hilton?

Ive tried checkin the fault codes but it seriously isnt working. i turn the screw on the ECU clockwise and leave for 2-3 seconds, then turn back to normal position but nothing. i bridge the two terminals (CHK and IGN) for the Consult plug but still nothin. The fuel system has already been checked. all good in that department.

when it drives it sounds as if its runnning on a few cylinders, then as it warms up it gets worse and there is barely any power. i also have to keep the revs up in case it stalls.

I have no idea what im lookin for now. any info or same experiences will help!!

well first up chuck in some new copper spark plugs even a student can afford them :)

ddi you find anyone up norht that has a consult cable? do you know Ron, maybe he has one? the consult kits are available as a group buy for about $25 + some soldering so try that next it will tell you what is goung wrong if it is electrical

poor GTRs dont like surviving on uni wages any more than a uni student does

in regard to what needs checking: its all above, weve told you. we cant do much more unless you get a reading of the fault codes or use some intuition and take apart the piping, pull out the AFM's and get them tested. An auto electrician can test stuff like coil power packs , AFMs etc if you dont have the right tools

if you cant afford the call out then it may be best to bite the bullet and sell the car. shes got a big belly and likes to eat your cash :)

Hey mate. I had a similar problem to you last week. If its pouring out black smoke out the back then it could be the vacuum. I was racing one night and my car popped. it wouldnt idle, it wouldnt stay, i had to keep my foot on the throttle to keep it alive. Sounded like a race car.... roooof rooof rooof. I thought i had screwed my engine or dropped a cylinder. After hours of thinking (Actually days) i came to the conclusion that it was my vacuum. That means, intercooler piping, BOVS or standard release valves, vacuum hoses to the turbos, anything to do with putting air into your car.

You also mentioned that you can hear a loud tapping, I heard the same thing. that was fixed as soon as I fixed my vacuum problem.

Anyways what i found out was that my inlet side on the Intercooler piping had come off, yes come off. This was making my gtr sound like a race car.

What i would suggest is to look into your pipes and BOV's and see if they are normal. BOV's pistons can seize due to age and cause bad vacuum. Piping can come off due to age.

If its your BOV's try to find stockies and use them, if its your piping, you might get away with just replacing the worm clamps to new ones and tightening up.

Good luck. ill keep checking this to see if you get anywhere.

    • Update 3: Hi all It's been a while. Quite a lot of things happened in the meantime, among other things the car is (almost) back together and ready to be started again. Things that I fixed or changed: Full turbo removal, fitting back the OEM turbo oil hardlines. Had to do quite a bit of research and parts shopping to get every last piece that I need and make it work with the GT2860 turbos, but it does work and is not hard to do. Proves that the previous owner(s) just did not want to. While I was there I set the preload for the wastegates to 0,9bar to hopefully make it easier for the tuner to hit the 370hp I need for the legal inspections that will follow later on. Boost can always go up if necessary. Fitted a AN10 line from the catch can to the intake hose to make the catchcan and hopefully the cam covers a slight vacuum to have less restrictive oil returns from the head and not have mud build up as harshly in the lines and catch can. Removed the entire front interior just shy of the dashboard itself to clean up some of the absolutely horrendous wiring, (hopefully) fix the bumpy tacho and put in LED bulbs while I was there. Also put in bulbs where there was none before, like the airbag one. I also used that chance to remove the LED rpm gauge on the steering column, which was also wired in absolute horror show fashion. Moved the 4in1 Prosport gauge from sitting in front of the OEM oil pressure gauge to the center console vents, I used a 3D printed vent piece to hold that gauge there. The HKB steering wheel boss was likely on incorrectly as I sometimes noticed the indicator reset being uneven for left vs. right. In the meantime also installed an airbag delete resistor, as one should. Installed Cube Speed premium short shifter. Feels pretty nice, hope it'll work great too when I actually get to drive. Also put on a fancy Dragon Ball shift knob, cause why not. My buddy was kind enough to weld the rust hole in the back, it was basically rusted through in the lowermost corner of the passenger side trunk area where the wheel arch, trunk panel and rear quarter all meet. Obviously there is still a lot of crustiness in various areas but as long as it's not rusted out I'll just treat and isolate the corrosion and pretend it's not there. Also had to put down a new ground wire for the rear subframe as the original one was BARELY there. Probably a bit controversial depending on who you ask about this... but I ended up just covering the crack in the side of the engine block, the one above the oil feed, with JB Weld. I used a generous amount and roughed up the whole area with a Dremel before, so I hope this will hold the coolant where it should be for the foreseeable future. Did a cam cover gasket job as the half moons were a bit leaky, and there too one could see the people who worked on this car before me were absolute tools. The same half moons were probably used like 3 times without even cleaning the old RTV off. Dremeled out the inside of the flange where the turbine housing mates onto the exhaust manifolds so the diameter matches, as the OEM exhaust manifolds are even narrower than the turbine housings as we all know. Even if this doesn't do much, I had them out anyways, so can't harm. Ideally one would port-match both the turbo and the manifold to the gasket size but I really didn't feel up to disassembling the turbine housings. Wrapped turbo outlet dumps in heat wrap band. Will do the frontpipe again as well as now the oil leak which promted me to tear apart half the engine in the first place is hopefully fixed. Fitted an ATI super damper to get rid of the worn old harmonic balancer. Surely one of the easiest and most worth to do mods. But torquing that ARP bolt to spec was a bitch without being able to lock the flywheel. Did some minor adjustments in the ECU tables to change some things I didn't like, like the launch control that was ALWAYS active. Treated rusty spots and surface corrosion on places I could get to and on many spots under the car, not pretty or ideal but good enough for now. Removed the N1 rear spats and the carbon surrounding for the tailpipe to put them back on with new adhesive as the old one was lifting in many spots, not pretty. Took out the passenger rear lamp housing... what do you know. Amateur work screwed me again here as they were glued in hard and removing it took a lot of force, so I broke one of the housing bolts off. And when removing the adhesive from the chassis the paint came right off too. Thankfully all the damaged area won't be visible later, but whoever did the very limited bodywork on this car needs to have their limbs chopped off piece by piece.   Quite a list if I do say so myself, but a lot of time was spent just discovering new shit that is wrong with the car and finding a solution or parts to fix it. My last problem that I now have the headache of dealing with is that the exhaust studs on the turbo outlets are M10x1.25 threaded, but the previous owner already put on regular M10 nuts so the threads are... weird. I only found this out the hard way. So now I will just try if I can in any way fit the front pipe regardless, if not I'll have to redo the studs with the turbos installed. Lesson learned for the future: Redo ALL studs you put your hands on, especially if they are old and the previous owners were inept maniacs. Thanks for reading if you did, will update when the engine runs again. Hope nothing breaks or leaks and I can do a test drive.
    • No those pads are DBA too  but they have colors too. I look at the and imo the green "street" are the best.
    • I’m not sure what happened I told them about sonic tunes free OTS tune and the next the I know .. I was booted..   To funny
    • Yea - I mean I've seen my fuel pump which is decades old and uh, while I'm not saying this with real knowledge... but I sure get the ick at using anything in the fuel system that produced the state of that pump. Many years ago I went through multiple pumps (and strainers) before I dropped the tank to clean it out with extreme violence. I'm talking the car would do maybe 50km before coming to a halt, which resulted in me cleaning out the filter with some brake cleaner and going on my way. None of my stuff ever looked like what came out of your fuel tank. I don't think I'd be happy with it unless every single component was replaced (or at least checked/cleaned/confirmed to be clean here).
    • I'm not going to recommend an EBC pad. I don't like them. Just about anything else would suit me better. I've been using Intima pads for a while now.
