I'll comment on my personal experience with both since I've had it. I own a (was stock) modified R33 and my brother owns a TT Soarer running 14psi and that's it. No zorst, no pod, just boost.

Stock for stock, the auto Soarer is faster than the manual R33 in a straight line by far.

Modified, my 240rwkw has a far superior top end to the Soarer but with stock turbos on 14psi his car really pulls hard off the line. The power of the Soarer with boost and nothing else is far superior to what you'd achieve with an RB25.

1jz > RB25 easily

But...

Skyline > Soarer (in my opinion) as they're lighter, nimbler, look better, far easier to come across in a manual. I chose the Skyline when I had the choice. He chose the Soarer and regrets it because it's so heavy.

An R33 with a 1jz would be the absolute best of both worlds :P

Skyline parts are cheaper and more mechanics know them. More develpoment in tuning them.

not necessarily. A decent replacement rb25det ur lookin at at least 3K, you can get a 1jz for almost half that!! (supply demand i guess, plenty of blowing up rb's to cater for i guess).

And as someone said i chose the r33 cos it was lighter and easier to find in a manual, and was a better overall package. I found one manual soarer for sale in qld at the time and it was 30 grand..

Would seriously consider a 1jz swap if my rb crapped out...

I guess if you can find a low end model that doesnt have all the extra crap, manual turbo, and played with the suspsension I think the soarer would kick arse. Toyotas from what I have seen anyway are much better cars than most nissans.

But the way I see it is, one is a sports car (skyline) the other is a GT car (soarer) but with money you could change that with both of them.

In terms of the engine, the 1j is just better. Cant compair them I dont think.

Tuners know them too, parts are ok. Yes there are less of them, so less parts, but they dont break so I would think demand would be less.

w00t .. jzx90 and jzx100 chasers are far better looking than a r33 sedan imo... definatley no camrys. I'd say they look like a bmw or something euro..

I used to have a mx83 cressida which is the same shape as the jzx80 chaser/cresta/mark 2. They weigh about 1400kgs, the later models (x90 and x100's ) are pushing 1500kgs depending on what options. Faster than a soarer, i remember hpi said the manual chaser was hard to get off the line and the auto ended up being faster across the quarter mile.

oh and unfortunatley the chasers are pretty rare. Not all of them over here have a 1jz, some a diesel versions with shoddy interior and live axle rear ends :O

x90 should set you back around 20 grandish? x100's seem to be about 24-28, a bit more for a manual if you're lucky to find one.top1.jpg

too camry like and still well in to the $20K region

and more auto's than in the soarers....

I can see your point.

But supras are wider and lower generally and im fairly sure they have a shorter wheel base. A well set up supra handles better than a 33 id imagine.

But I see your point, it would be in the same category for sure

These can be had for under 20k now... The problem is finding a manual one. Have seen a couple of drift examples and they can look pretty damn good when done properly.

JZX100's seem to be dropping in price too.

The main downer with x90's and x100's is the interior... And x81's for that matter

MY 1JZGTE has done 184000k's on a factory internals, factory cams, factory intake manifold, with just big turbo injectors and ecu i am making 500rwhp through and auto and have done for 2 years, it doesnt blow smoke the catch can has never had a drop of oil in it and im running tens in a big heavy cressida.

show me an rb 25 that has done that.

toyotas are cheaper for parts, a complete engine only costs $500 rb 25s as far as i know cost like $1500. i havent seen a rb25 auto or manual make the power i am with simple bolt ons.

why not?? big power engine in a medium sized coupe

ok, well you said that an "r33 with a 1jz" is "essentially a supra"... its not.

its actually essentially an r33 with a 1jz.

presuming we're talking about a 94/95 supra (in line with the discussion), it never came with a 1jz (came with either 2jz-gte twin turbo or 2jz-ge NA)

    • The wiring diagram for the R33 RB25 is freely available, and is essentially the same same as most other RBs (just with differences as to which pin # does which job). To get the ECU to power up, you just need to provide power to the ECCS relay, and have the other power feeds that come in from the top left of the wiring diagram (wrt the ECU) that give perma power to the fuel pump relay, the ECU itself, etc etc, all connected. When you put power on all these it will just come to life. It's pretty clear from the diagram what needs to happen. Just follow the lines from the 12V + supply stuff in the top left over towards the ECU. I've even posted snips of such diagrams (not for vanilla 25, I think for Neo and 26) to various threads here in the last few months, talking about what it takes to get the fuel pump and FPCM up and going. Search these up and they will help get you started on doing the same with the vanilla 25 diagram. Hell, for all I know, I've done the same with that one in years past and have forgotten.
    • Yep...so unless someone posts up the answer you will need to probe from the ECU connector to the dash plug with a multi meter in continuity mode to trace the wires.  Note the ECU has multiple - and + (and across different key settings - Battery, IGN and Start) and most likely the power is fed from the connector(s) that is normally near the left hand headlight.
    • Thanks Duncan, I am actually just trying to get the Rb turning and running with the RB25DET S2 original loom itself  I am just trying to get it going outside the body and not thinking about the S15 or trying to match anything to the S15 loom at all I am only trying to see if anyone has done this and what pin they found to be the ignition trigger and ECU+/- on the dash connector, that's about it. Thanks
    • Hi Guys, Does anyone know any aftermarket part numbers for a starter motor to suit the VQ25DET? I can find lots of alternative part number for the VQ35DE, which I assume would fit, but there is a lot of conflicting information out there. Thanks..
    • I don't understand how this hasn't boiled down to - Upgrade the turbo when you have everything required. ECU, injectors, fuel pump, turbo, etc. Do it all at once.  If you don't have everything required, just enjoy the car as it is and keep saving up your pennies.
