Is anyone going to the drags tomorrow night? .... If it's not pissing with rain I am gonna run my baby .... who's coming to watch? 0414 904 451 if u wanna hook up - I will be going down at about 6pm (due to a prior engagement).

what did you people who entered run??

thats if the rain didnt interfere with the night. i sorta cannt remember much about last night, ie whether it was wet or dry, hot or cold, cannt even remember gettin home as a matter of fact.

It was a mixed bag night ....

Got there 6:15pm .... MattR wasn't allowed to run his R32 cos it had different rear tyre types/brands.

Lined up for about half an hour in the scrutineering line .... scrutineer informs me I have to empty my coolant overflow tank so as to avoid overflow on the track (fair enough).

Proceed to try to siphon coolant out (ewwww that stuff tastes like CRAP) ... siphon hose not long enough. Have a look at removing the container - obstructed by air pod and heat shield. Try a few different things then after about an hour finally removed all the bits and emptied the damn thing. Reassembled.

Lined up in a huge drag line of about 30 cars .... see Whatshisname Matt and Brute Henry - nice to see some friendly faces.

Finally get to the front of the line when they decide to wheel out about a dozen road bikes for drags before me .... wait another 15 minutes or so.

Finally get out to the track in a short line and some commodore drops his oil half way down the track - another half hour wait.

So .... finally I get up to the line - do a nice burnout in 1st then 2nd gear - all ready to go and shitting my pants (which I had been all afternoon fyi).

I am lined up next to some insano-looking Torana with a big hornet scoop and supercharger - and no exhaust (=noisy).

Rev to 3,000rpm (normal street revs) for a 1st run (taking it easy). As expected it bogged down but didn't get a too bad start. Went through each gear and think I got into 6th for some reason - missed 5th to 6th change quite badly .... then I'm pretty sure I started slowing down just before the finish - it was pitch black and I couldn't see the finish line - in hindsight I shoulda just kept going but damn it was dark! (and shoulda kept it in 5th).

Anyhow, I didn't care cos it was my 1st ever run down the strip. Results as follows:

Not too bad but not too good either - I know there is plenty more left in her than that!

2nd run line up for about an hour .... just get near the front of the line and another commodore drops its lunch - another 15 minute wait.

Get out on the line - this time I'm up against some monster old statesman with a thumping V8 again no exhaust.

Do a bigger burnout this time to get more heat into my tyres .... clutch feels a tiny bit funny changing into 2nd for the burnout.

This time I launch at 5,000rpm so as to not bog down - I get a good launch but change into 2nd and the revs rise massively quickly yet I'm not going any faster .... this continues in every gear :) .... clutch is slipping wickedly - the revs rise but I'm not going very fast at all. After the run I stop down the back straight and do a couple of launches and it now seems ok??

Get back out the back to line up again - clutch absolutely stinks for about half an hour of lining up so I call it quits lest I break it completely. Timeslip is as follows :P

All in all a fun but disappointing night .... my clutch still reeks today even on short drives - new clutch for me :(

Oh well I'll be out there next time and have a decent run (I hope) - at least now I know how it all works and have made my mistakes!

At least my reaction times weren't too bad and my 60' times were ok(ish) - but I know I can do heaps better than them though so there's plenty for me to think about!

Seems like a lot of waiting around :)

But sounds like it was a good experience for you :( I know I'd be packin my pants if I was doin it :P

Yeah I had a blast and will definitely do it again! .... I would like to get my intercooler on first (if and when I get one) so I can boost it up a bit more .... I only have a vid of the second (crappy) run at http://briefcase.yahoo.com/bc/andnus2002/l...+1-3-03&.view=l if ya want to have a look .... will post some more videos soon including a couple of Matt's (Whatsisname) runs and one of Keirs at 9.69 ... these files are about 5Mb each so they suck for 56kers, but its all I can do until I learn some serious video compression!

Yeah I had a bit of a disappointing night too :P The power is there for a 12 no prob's, 115.8mph TS shows that. A best of 13.0 @ 113mph was a piss off, 12.99 would've made me much happier :D Oh well that's drag racing for you :P

1st run - Drove off the line @ 3000rpm & bogged - 13.0 @ 113 (2.238)

2nd run - 4500rpm dumped clutch. Sat there spinning, had to back off to get traction - 13.6 @ 115.8 (2.667) *Note to self* - DON'T GO AROUND THE WATER. ALWAYS DO A SMALL BURNOUT AT LEAST!

3rd run - 4500rpm trying to slip clutch & feed power on. Clutch slips badly in 1st (hit limiter!) continues to slips into 2nd - 13.7 @ 111 (2.519)

4th & final run - 3000rpm drive off line again (was expecting clutch to slip so took it easy) bogged "again" - 13.1 @ 112.8 (2.275)

Things to remember for next meet:

4500rpm (possibly higher?) clutch dump works best

I need some w/spin off the line to build boost

Shift gears @ 6800-7000rpm not 7200-7300rpm (my limiter is @ 7350rpm)

Always do a burnout, nothing huge just a quick one (save the clutch)

Matt, not a bad result, plenty of people out there would be happy with a flat 13. Shame you couldnt hook up well, thats a pretty good TS!

why do you think you should go 4500 off the line? you got better 60' at 3000?.

Just curious, I have never attempted the 1/4 myself:)

Thanks mate. I'd be happy with a flat 13 if I was only getting 106mph in street trim, but with 113-115mph I "should" be going much quicker. A nice twin plate clutch would be good but don't have the $$$ atm :P

I think a 4500rpm launch will give me a better 60' foot time IF (& it's a big if) the car hooks up with a small amount of w/spin. 3000rpm only gave me better 60's this meet as the 2 passes I did @ 4500rpm were hampered by clutch issues & too much w/spin (due to cold tyres - no burnout!) I've run a best 60' of 2.153 with my old tyres launching @ 3000rpm. They had a lot less grip & spun a touch easier, whereas the RE540S's need more rev's to prevent the car bogging down.

If I'd have got a 2.1XX on any of the passes I did I'd have run a 12! Damn it!

Sounds like everyone learnt something, even if no one met their expectations

it also sounds like everyone is having clutch problems - not good!

I guess at least there is a month to sort out the problems until next time.

On another note, I saw a White R32 GTST with a Power FC being tuned at Morpowa on the weekend, I think the guy has posted a few things on the forums, but I can't remember his name? Interesting though, as I thought that they never made one for a 32 GTST?

Matt, that makes me feel better after my first attempt. The mph should be good for a mid 12 at least. What pressure were you running in the 540s tyres. I has mine set a 10psi when i ran with some but they were 225/50/16 so 17's will need a bit more.

Are they going to be running a meet at the start of every month now? If so i should have all my problems fixed by then, although i think once i get traction my clutch will fry itself as well.

A mate got a quote from direct clutch in Qld for his Gtr and a twin plate was only about $1600 trade, with a flywheel, they are supposed to be a very good clutch just a bit noisier than nornal multi plate clutches. but way cheaper.

What was wrong with MattR's tyres, that they were diff than the front or diff on each side.

They were different at the rear on each side .... you have to have identical rear tyres or they won't let you run!

I have heard they are trying to have one every month .... we REALLY need to get more guys out .... it is great fun and I want to run against some of you - rather than some beefed up bloody drag V8 running slicks and no exhaust whatsoever!!!

It was nice to see, however that a 5.8L VT HSV with slicks ran a paltry 13.9sec run a few runs after me :) - puts my (very bad start and backed off before the end) 14.18 into perspective! :D

Matt my car run best of 12.7 @ 107 mph and i can tell u traction is everything. Clutches will suffer but to get good Drag Racing times u need a good 60 ft time no ifs no buts. It is where a car shows its best performance and rapid ET drops. Autos with high stalls r the go but with manual big revs and Sticky tyres r the go. Although this can lead to breakages. As u can see my car doesnt have the top end of Forced Induction motors but ET is faster. Gearing in diffs is also a factor. From memory my best 60 ft was around 1.78 seconds. Just go to show that 125 rwkw and gearing makes i BIG difference if u can Hook Up. Just ask Munro how important 60ft times r to your ET :]

Any way glad u had fun. Im sure the mechanic will be glad to see u as well hehe.

BTW Andy im gonna save up for some tyres methinks. Might give u some runs in the near future. Not cheap but worth the fun in the long run. Besides i wanna show Matt some old school 6 cly action hehe. Nar it will be fun anyway. I got rid of the butterfly syndrome long ago. Comp meets with in excess of 20,000 ppl get rid of butterflys quick , trust me. After that tis all smooth sailing.

Nightcrawler whats wrong with no exhausts, before i went out last time we decided that if they v8s can do it so can i, so we made a nice 3.5'' side pipe just for the fun of it.

But its a bit off a gamble who you run against, some cars look fast but are not and others you just cant tell i would rather chase a faster car down though as last time i never lost a race and it was no challenge.

Clint - no exhaust on a Skyline would sound wicked! .... yes you are right about the sleepers .... there were some that sounded wicked and looked good but were slow; and others that looked like a POS but went like hell!

There were a LOT of cars running under 12 seconds Saturday (in fact most), so you would've had a challenge! In fact there were a lot of cars in the 9s!

For those that have downloaded on of the videos of Matt (off my Yahoo site) .... you will notice on one run that he was racing the 'Motor Shop' TC Cortina (that got the front wheel off the ground in that run) that on another run did a 9.65 .... non-turbo, non-injected (so I am told) 250 crossflow motor .... now that's power!

    • What 1.5 way? There's no such thing really as a 1.5 way, just different ways of explaining 2 ways with different ramp rates. HOWEVER. In any driving in a straight line your 1.5 or 2 or 1.7 way should have no clunking at all. With the clutch fully depressed the diff should be silent (unless it's welded but I'm assuming it's not). Something aint right here.
    • Clutch is a spec brand, new clutch system,( PP, flywheel, friction disc, etc. pull type) installed 100 miles ago, with no problems.
    • looking for some help and maybe some insight on others experience with a new LSD. R34 GT ran and drove beautifully, but always alot of grip loss due to the open R200 rear end, so I just installed a new 1.5 LSD way into the stock open R200 for a ER34. Simple. Everything seemed right. I test drove for the first time this weekend. as I started to back out the garage the first time slowly with tires straight it sounded and felt like I had a loose or half disconnected drive shaft...that was clucking around loose and shaking entire vehicle, and making it feel like the trans clutch was spontaneously slipping then grabbing very roughly while just letting out pedal slowly. I backed it out went to pull forward with the same noise, shake and slip grab feeling with hesitation, I turned the tires to back out more and then pulled ahead some same thing but worst because of added wheel resistance (which that I expected) puzzled … pulling it back in checking everything over and finding nothing wrong, I tried it the next day. same thing, couldn’t believe how it shook everything again making a terrible noise and making it feel like the trans clutch was slipping and grabbing, but I got it out of garage into the driveway, got it straight, drove forward and then reveres a few times in a straight line everything shaking , causing what felt like clutch slip and grab every time, sounded like right behind front driver tire and I could feel it in the floor board with my feet,... worst right when beginning to let clutch pedal out to engage slightly, shuttering and sounding terrible along the way…I managed to slowly get down the road, babying it the whole way, once I was rolling (out of 1st) seemed to be better and between shifts, then clutch felt closer to normal…not slip/ grab etc., but back down to any stop, straight road or turning, same thing. Made no difference if all tires were straight or if I was turning. All other gauge read out correct. with in 2 miles as planned I reached the empty parking lot and performed the break in procedure that came with lsd, essentially to drive in a figure 8 a bunch.  Did this, binding chattering, and shaking the car the whole way. I drove it back home seemed somewhat normal once I was in straight line and past 10 mph or so, and I know it will “bind” on corners and cause some tires squeal when turning especially from a stop, but when I begin to move it still causes what feels like the trans clutch to slip and jerk badly as well as shaking the entire car, and sounds terrible, that I didn’t expect. I used the fluid they supplied with LSD kit and did the breaking, planning to change fluid as they suggest after breaking, but wondering will it get smoother or less aggressive with use? maybe a 1.5 is just too aggressive for normal road driving?   I have a LSD that I put in my 71 cuda when I restored it, with amazing smooth , quite yet effective results. Different style LSD but that ones a joy to drive. maybe expecting too much from this R200?
