great thinking the car will need a tune and may be the timing played with performance wont be that bad either. stick with the stock computer cause the rb25de has different size injectors. if it need a new computer then swap it for the non turbo computer and non turbo injectors but also remember to keep the turbo computer and injectors. this is a good way to counter the new laws and gives you a good base to work with ie better brakes etc. and when eligable you should be able to bolt the turbo back up

Hey I know this may be a silly suggestion, but wouldn't it be easier for you to just offer some one a turbo upgrade ( i.e. some one with a N/A r33.. ) and just use their parts.. so all you would be effectively paying for is the labour..then when u need to change back do the same thing.. ( after compliance then rego at regency?) I dunno.. maybe some one out there with a N/A feels like a bit of boosting action!!!

Even if it's for a few months only :cheers: Anyways.. congrats on the buy to ur girlfriend!! It's always good to see chicks driving nice rides, and the rides actually belonging to them and not their boyfriends.. haha

I know this conversion sounds crazy but im actually contemplating it myself. I have a really nice r33gtst lined up with excellent body work, light weight racing wheels after market suspension, inside is immaculate... basically I REALLY want this car. However I cant drive it on my P's obviously. still have 2 years left. So i'm interested to know how you went with this conversion? I know its a bit old but its exactly what i need to know about?? I really want the bigger brakes and stuff like that. Anyone know where I can get this conversion done? Also, how much would an rb30de cost fitted roughly? If that was going to be the easy way out...

from what i have found in my investigations about the RTA and the law reguarding skyline GTST's is that its not totally illegal to drive one. basically i was talking to one ex highschool teachers (i kept in touch with my puta teacher cuz he's crazy and brews his own beer!) and mentioned i was hoping to get a GTST but being on my p's its "illegal". he said that the govt cant exactly stop some one from driving a turbo car if its the only one thay have access too. so i investigated this further and found out that you can get exemptions. lukily for me my job relies on my car, but one of the only decent reasons is work. so i applied and yeah. its all good.

sorry but your wrong, in NSW i have tryed to get exemtions...there are only a very limited ways of getting aound this law.. and the fact that you have no access to any other car besides a turbo or v8 is simply not an excuse.. i tryed this already.. they say if your job needs the car, you can get exemtions during work hours, this mostly relates to turbo diesals.. ie pickup trucks , so on, country driving.. i find it really hard to imagine the RTA giving exeptions to anyone to drive a turbo skyline?? what does your job involve? getting places really fast ??.. theres no actual use for a highperformance turbo car in the work force, so ud have to come up with a pretty damm good excuse why u need it..

yeah, i called a guy at RTA and asked about this. basically with out telling the entire story is that, turbocharged deisels and turbo 4 cylinders are allready expempt, and that my work doesnt provide a car (the ppl i work for a really really cheap.) my excuse (which i was told is a valid one) is that; a) its a family car B) my family takes care of my grand parents and its too small for them to get into (covers why cant use the old car) C) i gotta get to work and that i cant keep relying on friends and family giving me lifts. that is what i have been told on several occasion by RTA people. i found all this out by reading the application forms and calling the RTA. so technically its not for getting to work really "fast" as you so eloquently put it but being the only car thats accesible. the RTA arent so totally unreasonable. besides if they deny it you can allways take them to court. :laugh:

man ive read over these forms about 5 million times.. i gave the guy every excuse i could come up with.. he basicly told me you can try, but u have non in bucklys chance of getting it.. unless its a turbo diesal and you do some sort of trade which requires that car.. i said the our VZ ss is the only car in our family, its needed to get to a from work etc.. they said no chance.. cant use that excuse, unless maybe your a mechanic, who actually may need to move cars during work hours, which may be a v8 or turbo.. so basicly unless your a mechanic, and you want to be able to drive your turbo line in hours other than work hours, i cant see many ways around this.. our government are retards who dont understand the fact that a car is a weapon, used properly its fine, but a turbo or v8 is just a more refined more powerful weapon, with added safety features.. making us drive shitbox corollas, designed to take grandmar to do her shoping is like giving us an old shitty gun with no safety, just easier to blow your hand of.. lol hope u like my little comparison.. just pisses me off. we need more advanded driving courses not more bullshit bans

yeah, i know how ya feel jus thinking about it pisses me of. and to top it all off i had to sit in the rta office for 1 and half hours while the recon they were printing on the licsence. imo the whole world is against pplaters!

lol, my bad, didnt even take a look eh; nah its hard to sell a turbo 33, not worried about the laws, got my license before, but yea, now im after the conversion, so, if it is indeed under a grand, worth doing IMO, cause turbo's seem to go for less, outrageous it seems, but thats life.

hey eatkao iv actually done the conversion myself twice.......

had a r32 which had a rb25det s1 in it and had to do it due to P's

did all the work myself piss easy basically just pulled the turbo off and blocked all the water lines and oil lines

then made up a adaptor that went from the manifold to the exaust where the turbo usually is just 2 flanges and some bits of steel plate filling in between them (im a welder by trade, but anyone could do it).

also had to work out a system for the air intake just used a intercooling pipe that i had with a pod on the end of it that went to the afm then into the motor.

car ran alright abit ritch (inside pipe black) and was heavy on fuel (might of had to do something with my foot :blink:)

but ran fine seemed to go better after a couple of days of driving it around tuned itself in or something.

crashed that one.....

got a gts4 now with a rb20 and did the same to it a couple of weeks ago

and its also running fine, just abit slow... turbo back in 4 months :)

Heres come actual constructive information. (Please note, i stopped reading the pointless posts half way through this thread.)

I have been told that the car will have to be tuned afterwards and may need a new computer which the mechanic has.

The car will run -near- perfect untuned. Think about it, when you are driving your car off boost (vacuum) it is -exactly- like driving the motor as Non-Turb.

The ECU reads how much air is coming through the air flow metre, and injects fuel accordingly. It doesnt matter that you have bigger injectors, and low compression. It will run fine.

It WOULD need a retune if you installed lower CC non turbo injectors.

Comparitively, it will not produce as much torque as a higher compression Non Turbo motor. But you say she isnt after power.

wouldn't the turbo engine have lower comp than the non-turbo.

will the computer work very well like that?

You will have a low comp engine, larger injectors, turbo ecu and it won't run well at all. why are u doing this to yourself?

    • Just trying to get my head around this. At 5psi of boost, you turn on your wmi pump, and then you're using a 3000cc injector, to allow flow upto the actual engine, where you have your 6x200cc injectors and a 500cc injector. If the above is correct, what advantage are you obtaining by having the 3000cc injector blocking flow, is this just incase a line breaks between that injector and the motor you can stop flow immediately? Or are the 6x200cc and 500cc less injectors and just spray nozzle?
    • Welcome! New member myself, but I had an R33 back in 2002. Best advice I could give, based on my experience: if you're running the factory turbo, be very conservative with boost. I made the mistake of just fiddling around with the boost controller and cranking the boost for fun, and the end result was my intake pipes popping off frequently from the constant deluge of oil that was being blown into the recirc by the stressed-out turbo, which itself was siphoning oil from the engine and farting it out both sides of its centre bearing (or something to that effect). If I could do it all again, I would have gotten a new turbo and had a tune dialled in professionally and then just left it alone! Funny you mention the metal shavings in the gearbox, as I had the same thing - the probe plug (magnetic drain plug, essentially) would come out caked with shavings. At least it was doing its job. Not sure if that's just sacrificial wear and part of the deal, or if my gearbox was shagged, but I wasn't abusing it. Enjoy the R33 - they're a dying breed, and if they weren't $35k+ on CarSales in Queensland, I might have picked up one of those again, instead of the 370GT I own now (though I'm loving the 370GT, that big 3.7L V6 just hits different).
    • Howdy folks. I owned an R33 back in 2002, which was thoroughly beyond my capacity (financially speaking) to maintain/insure, so we parted ways in 2004. Fast forward 21 years (to literally yesterday, in fact) and I'm now the proud owner of a 2007 V36 370GT. I'm happily surprised by how much power the VQ37VHR makes, compared to the RB25DET, considering the latter is turbocharged. I had planned to add a turbo at some point but I'm on the fence about whether I'll even need it (though I do love the sudden onset of extra torque). Any other 370GT owners around the traps, I'd love to hear about your experiences with this car (good and bad).

    • I NEVER think about using a scissor jack unless there is absolutely no other alternative. f**king things are dangerous, annoying and stupid.
