Hey all,

I am looking at the option to install Tomei intake and exhaust camshafts in my R33 myself.

I have been searching for any details on how to do it on the website, but am unable to find any details.

I assume some of you have installed cams and could give some pointers.

How hard is it? does the head need to be removed? Is there a how to install thread?

ok... asuming you know your way around an engine..

the only advise i have is once you have the cam sitting in the journals tention the bearing caps down really slowly and in an evan staggerd way.

(dont do one cap up all the way as the cam WILL snap!!!)

hand start all the caps before you slowly tension up each one abit at a time..

paying atention to the caps that sit near the valve buckets which the lobes are trying to open...if that makes any sence..

(should only be 2 at a time)

the tension on the caps is 10nm. (just niped up) same with the 4 pully bolts there done up to 15nm max.

Pull rocker covers off. You'll have to take off the top pipe going across the engine. You'll also have to undo the throttle body to get at one bolt underneath it, once undone just slide it out of the road.

Unplug the CAS plug, remove the CAS. (make sure u mark on the CAS itself and the timing cover where it is currently sitting)

Remove the timing belt cover.

Remove exhaust cam. Be very careful you dont pull it out too far as the belt will come off the teeth on the bottom pulley. Support this up by using some rope and securing it to the bonnet, this will keep it from dropping down.

Start undoing the bearing caps from the centre out. Start with the centre one, then do one to the front of the engine, and then the back, and so on til all of them are out. (make sure u know which ones sat where)

Remove existing camshaft, and place new camshaft in.

Refit all the bearing caps from the centre out (i snapped a cam once doing the caps up from the back)

Then refit the exhaust camshaft.

Then move to the inlet side and repeat these exact steps.

Then refit the rocker covers and double check EVERYTHING to insure you havnt forgotten anything. (you should be able to reuse the rubber seals for the covers, if they havnt gone all dry and hard.)

You need to find the workshop manual for your engine. There's a whole lot of extra stuff other than

removing bolts, inserting new camshaft, doing bolts back up again. My manual was $500ish from

importdriver.com.au but you _may_ be able to find a .pdf floating around the Internet somewhere.

If it's an RB26, the manual on pp EN-71 - EN-76 describes the camshaft removal/install procedure. You

of course need to _get_ to the cams first, via removing a whole bunch of other things :P

ACCORDING TO NISSAN:

REMOVAL (for RB26)

EN-71 has a diagram showing the cam bracket removal order. Mark the cam brackets to indicate

position and direction. Then remove the cam bracket bolts by loosening them gradually in several stages

(the do-up recommendation is 1.5 turns at a time, so I'd use this for removal) in REVERSE OF THE SEQUENCE

shown below.

FRONT 1 5 9 13 11 7 3

2 6 10 14 12 8 4

(whole bunch of other stuff snipped, read it in the manual).

So according to the manual, to undo, you start in the centre and work your way out a little at a time,

to do up you start at the ends and work your way inwards 1.5turns at a time.

I had always assumed it was clock wise from inside to out, but to be honest when you think about it, the lobes that are trying to open valves are under the most strain when you are tightening it all up. Makes a lot of sense to me to worry about those caps rather than a set order.

Which valves would be trying to open with number 1 at TDC on the firing stroke anyway?

I have always been more worried about the timing belt slipping to be honest :cheers:

Before removing anything put the crank pulley to TDC . After you remove the rocker covers make sure that the cam gears are linning up with their marks while the crank pulley is still on TDC. If you are going to re-use the timming belt you dont need to take the bottom cover off. Put 2 marks on the belt, one on each camgear mark . Take the camgears off and somehow hold the belt tight on the crank gear to make sure it doesn't jump any teeth . When you re-install the cams and the gears, the marks will make it easier to put the belt in. Check to make sure all the timming marks are linning up still.

The brackets should be undone from the outside towards the centre. So start from the front bracket next the rear then back to number 2 and so on, Make sure you only undo the 6mm bolts a little at the time so you dont snap a camshaft . Instalation is in reverse order, again in several steps and tighten to 12 nm .

Make sure all the cambrackets go back where they came from and in the same direction too. Use new can seals and depending on condition i would use new rocker cover gaskets too .

Take care when installing the CAS to make sure the half pins line up. I would mark the CAS before removing and put it back in the same spot then check timming with a light .

If you havent replaced the timming belt its a good idea to do that and while you are at it tensioner, iddler and water pump.

Thanks all for your reply's... they will help heaps with the install. Is there anyone out there who could copy the relevant pages from the manual (should not infringe the copyright laws to do a couple of pages).

Any idea of how many hours to allow to install?

    • Even more fun, leave all the ADAS stuff plugged in, but in different locations, hopefully avoid any codes!   And honestly, all these new cars with their weird electronics. Pull all the electronics out Duncan, and just shove an aftermarket ECU and if needed a trans controller in, along with a PDM. Make it run basic but race car styled!
    • To follow up a question from earlier too since I had the front bar off again (fking!) This is what is between the bumper and the drivers side wheel And this is the navigator side, only one thing but its a biggy! So basically....no putting coolers in the wheel arches without a lot of moving other stuff. Assuming I move to properly race prepping this car I'll take that job on and see how the computers respond to removing a whole bunch of ADAS modules
    • So I prepped the car for another track day on Wednesday (will be interesting to see coolant temps post flushing out and the larger reservoir, with a forecast of 3-14 being 20o cooler than last time I took it out). Couple of things to mention; since I am just driving the car and not taking a support vehicle, I took the rear seats out and just loaded the back up Team Trackday style. Look at all that space! To cover off removing the rear seat....it is weird (note the hybrid is probably different because it wouldn't have folding rear seats) Basically, you remove the lower seat base, very similar to a r series but it is a clip that pulls forward to release the base rather than it being bolted down. Easy Then, you need to remove the side section of the rear seat on each side. There is a 14mm head nut at the bottom of the side piece, the it slides upwards off a hook at the top to release; you also need to unhook the seatbelt from the loop at the top. Then the centre piece is weird. You need to release/fold the seats forward with the tab in the boot on each side From there, there are 2,x12mm headed bolts holding the rear of each seat to the folding bracket, under the trim between the rear seat and the boot (4x christmas tree clips there, they suck). The seat is out but you can see where the bolts attach to the bracket
    • As discussed in the previous post, the bushes in the 110 needed replacing. I took this opportunity to replace the castor bushes, the front lower control arm, lower the car and get the alignment dialled in with new tyres. I took it down to Alignment Motorsports on the GC to get this work done and also get more out of the Shockworks as I felt like I wasn't getting the full use out of them.  To cut a very long story short, it ended up being the case the passenger side castor arm wouldn't accept the brand new bush as the sleeve had worn badly enough to the point you could push the new bush in by hand and completely through. Trying a pair of TRD bushes didn't fix the issue either (I had originally gone with Hardrace bushes). We needed to urgently source another castor arm, and thankfully this was sourced and the guys at the shop worked on my car until 7pm on a Saturday to get everything done. The car rides a lot nicer now with the suspension dialled in properly. Lowered the car a little as well to suit the lower profile front tyres, and just bring the car down generally. Eternally thankful for the guys down at the shop to get the car sorted, we both pulled big favours from our contacts to get it done on the Saturday.  Also plugged in the new Stedi foglights into the S15, and even from a quick test in the garage I'm keen to see how they look out on the road. I had some concerns about the length of the LED body and whether it'd fit in the foglight housing but it's fine.  I've got a small window coming up next month where I'll likely get a little paint work done on the 110 to remove the rear wing, add a boot wing and roof wing, get the side skirt fixed up and colour match the little panel on the tail lights so that I can install some badges that I've kept in storage. I'm also tempted to put in a new pair of headlights on the 110.  Until then, here's some more pictures from Easter this year. 
    • I would put a fuel pressure gauge between the filter and the fuel rail, see if it's maintaining good fuel pressure at idle going up to the point when it stalls. Do you see any strange behavior in commanded fuel leading up to the point when it stalls? You might have to start going through the service manual and doing a long list of sensor tests if it's not the fuel system for whatever reason.
