A week ago on saturday night i was driving towards the city on southern cross drive. I saw a commodore flying up to me way faster than 80 and then overtook me and stopped in front of me at the traffic lights. As it initially passed me i assumed it was an undercover car as it was that blue colour like all of them, it had the steel wheels etc. Then when it pulled up in front i saw it had a red p-plate on the rear window so assumed it was just another p plater hoon trying to get a response from me.

Later that night as i was turning onto george st, i saw the same car again front on, it had a p plate on the front window as well, and there were COPS INSIDE! it was kind of funny as i was staring at them with eyes wide open and they were staring back as in 'hey its them again!' lol.

Anyway are police allowed to do that? Anyone seen it before? I wanted to take a picture but thought they might get annoyed!

so.... were they hot coppers?

so.... were they hot coppers?

lol well one was a lady and too far away so couldnt see.

Although the other day i was having a look into the car next to me, the girl was hot, but then they pulled me over :) it was undercover cops again (no p plates this time)

I guess it was kind of exciting being questioned by a hot cop :P:):(

In SA as cops do their training they have a couple of levels driver training.

The final bit (they get this well before they graduate police school) allows them to go any speed they like while on duty in proportion with how urgent the callout is.

So if there is somthing serious going on they can be going as fast as is safe, but they would have a hard time justifying doing 130km in a 60km zone to catch a jaywalker.

At a driver education day that was put on by the local police for my school (year 11 - most have their L's and going for P's)..

I asked the Senior Sargent about this question.

He said "any person with a gold license can drive around with provisional plates as it doesn't apply to them".

Sorta wish I recorded it.

a few mates of mine have seen 2 coppers in a RX-3 hooning around at the runs.

Bloke in a WRX lines up, copper runs with him and then slows down, turns on sirens and bang

WRX impounded hehe

its wat i heard from a mate

so not sure if its 100% true

but freaky if it is

What I want to see is an Undercover police in a skyline!

I think I had a dream one nite about that

The coppers used to have a Black R34 GTR, with custom plates (cant remember them)....and i think they kept it in Ultimo (location might be incorect) do a search through the forum....i thin it would have been late 2003/early 2004 that that was floating round

and I have a mate that used to b a "p-plate" copper (hes off his p-plates) and i thikn he said that the p-platers can drive if they have a Seargent(?) next to them...there was a condition placed on it, and they have to display plates, just like te rest of us. might also be the situation i the copper has *shock horror* lost their licence, and come backn on p-plates. i might be wrong, but thats what i thought

Edited by ultimatepowder

Maybe the copper driving around was simply on his P-Plates... it is clearly stated that even a police officer needs to display his P-plates when driving any vehicle if he is in fact on them.

Sounds stupid but true....

Other than that; isn't it illegal to have P-Plates displayed when you're not on them?

Ironic?

been booked on james ruse rd @ rosehill on a tuesday night heading towards castle hill

Ford Falcon - Red - With P Plates

Extremely suprised when i saw the lights flash.....so these days i treat every falcon i see like a cop car....until i have a good look at it.

Other than that; isn't it illegal to have P-Plates displayed when you're not on them?

nah wat i was told by the rta a few yrs ago was if they were displayed while a full licenced was behind the wheel they had to abide by the speedlimit set my the p plate laws. L plates were excepted from the rules.

achomohol limits were as per full licence

thank god for that! We'd get all sorts of smart asses trying to get out of their crimes!!!

Isn't inducement a crime? Last time I checked if I incited people to comitting crimes, I'd get chucked in jail anyway.

At any rate, if a copper in an RX-3 hits the runs and launches against the WRX, then technically even if its not entrapment the copper is still guilty of street racing.

I honestly would not stop if I had a p-plater behind me with flashing lights, its just way too risky. They can quite happily follow me back to the nearest police station but I aint stopping.

Just like about a month ago I seen an undercover copper in a toyota tarago pull over a car on the M4 Westbound, like hell im stopping for a tarago with some flashing lights on their dashboard.

It really wouldn't be that hard to hijack a car these days. Throw some flashing lights in my car and find another nice looking car, turn on the lights, pull over the car and me and a mate get out with a baseball bat, flatten the driver and steal the persons car. So why the heck should I take that risk with a undercover p-plater?

    • Its a 2002 vr-x four VQ25DET, silver. Coil overs, lowered, polished alloys and sport exhaust. Bit of a project, was sitting in a shed for a while but runs and drives great.
    • I wasn’t able to replicate the sound anymore. It was a one time sound so maybe it was just coincidence but it was like small pebbles being dropped in a coke can.   should I try cleaning the MAF? It could be it’s functioning but dirty? I don’t know.
    • Update 4: Hi all. The car drives again! Haven't driven for long, only to store it in the garage again, but the test drive was successful. The coolant and oil leaks seem to be fixed for now. Temps on the engine were also very good, while moving I never even saw 80C water during the approx. 30 minute drive. Ate up all the coolant in the reservoir though so will have to fill that even more when I go to the car next time. One thing that pisses me off is that the RPM gauge is still f**ked, I even resoldered the board twice and used copper paste on the silly screws that are used as connections. Next time I take it out I'll take apart the board and fit new components, I'll see if I can get a replacement IC for it.  I have an appointment set for 22nd of September for the engine tune to 370hp. Alignment also still needs to be done. My hope is that I can get all the legal stuff over with by the end of this season. Anyone of you have advice regarding intercoolers? Currently there is an APEXI core fitted, one of those weird hybrid ones, 600x270x76. I don't think it's bad but it's not new and now I still have the chance to change it now to legally include it in the paperwork. Only issue is that the only options that would arrive in time are a HKS Type R intercooler or generic Ebay spec intercoolers comparable to a JustJap one. Ideally I'd order a Plazmaman but it takes over a month to receive which would mean making the car legal has to wait until next season. Would love to hear some input on this. Same story for my injectors, the previous owner was a nunce and put ID 1050x on the engine. They work but are obviously not ideal at "normal" power levels. But I don't see a reason to change them unless the tuner says it's necessary. I read online before buying a different exhaust that the top secret style rear diffusers won't fit due to the size of the rear resonators. My buddy and I made it work by slightly "adjusting the shape" of the mounting bracket and making some spacers out of 3d print for the mounting bolts. Fits like a charm. Just putting this here in case someone has this problem. Even the hefty HKS Silent Hi Power rear can fits without hitting anything.
