Hi there,

I've been doing abit of research into getting cames for the R34. Now from what I've seen there are two types of Poncams avaliable for the R34: type A (252/252) and type B (260/260).

Going by a few user comments it would seem because idle isn't drastically affected it would be wiser to go with the typeB 260 degree cams?

What I would really like to know is: is there anything else needed to fit these cams? Such as valve springs or adjustable cam gears?

And would I need to get a tune or require aftermarket engine management such as PFC in order for these to work/run properly? Is it possible to have the camshafts installed with stock ECU management?

Thanks,

Andy

a lot of this has been covered before, and i suspect abo bob / bassjunky / sydneykid could give you some info on r34 gtt cam specifics but it is somewhat pointless on a stock turbo'd neo 25t.

you would be mad to fit larger cams with stock ecu and stock everything else

Bass Junky lost power when he installed Tomei Type B cams with his std turbo. But when he upgraded to a hi-flow turbo he gained alot more, as the turbo was able to provide more air.

As Paul has stated above, you'd be MAD (and pointless) to install cams on a stock engine setup. Invest the money in a ecu, i found that to be my biggest bang for buck, before the turbo upgrade.

Thanks guys. Hmm I was just pretty sure that I read somewhere that sometimes cams are under-estimated and somtimes can be used before a turbo upgrade to bring out hidden potential.

If this is the case then I might leave cams off later in the list and spend the money towards a tune suspension goodies. :)

Oh and I do plan on getting a PFC sooner or later. Would prefer to have my fmic, turbo-back exhaust, fuel pump, fuel reg and boost controller fitted first though.

Cam gears don't help on NEO engines either.

No point in doing cams without a bigger turbo as mentioned above.

But in closer answer to your question:

You don't need anything extra like valve springs or whatever, they drop straight in.

I can also tell you that with no retune done I got 25rwkw extra from the type b poncams, it's now running very rich in the midrange and the detonation threshold has moved up about 2500rpm. All at the same boost.

Just dug up an old post before about exhaust cam gears so it looks look a cam gear is no help on the NEO engine abo bob. I know of one that had good results with a ex cam gear on a 33 gtst but am wondering if anyone else has had good results.

munna on an R33 totally worthwhile but do it when you do the timing belt. 10-15kw gains.

Satanic.

I promise that if you don't tell us how to get better results with our cams gears, that I will ban you and eat your first born.

I'm hungry.

Munna. There IS a gain to be had, depends on the dyno and the car and all those other things.

Do a search for something like "Cam* Gears dyno" and you will find a fair few throads about them.

Basically you retard the exhaust wheel by about 4 degrees and readjust base timing. It brings your torque curve over a little and gives up to about 10rwkw gain at the top.

Everyones experiences have been slightly different.

I just KNOW that from my experience to date (Satanic, I'm waiting for further information) that they have no effect on Neo engines.

Satanic.

Don't make me kill you and eat you.

    • There's restrictor pills in the stock boost control hoses. That's how they set the amount that was bled off and hence the "high" boost setting. The usual mod in the day was to remove it and send the "high" boost setting up to about 14 psi.
    • Thanks Duncan, that's the best info I've read. Furthermore after learning about the PCM programming side controlling the factory boost solenoid, the purpose of the solenoid is to "bleed" boost when pin 25 is earthed, thus allowing spring pressure in the wastegate actuator to overcome diaphragm boost pressure, thus closing or reducing the position of the wastegate flap creating more boost as the turbo is able to spin faster. It's pretty cool to see a designated Pill to do exactly this, would have liked to have seen it with a tiny filter over the end for those moments in vacuum.  The constant bleed pill has now been removed completely from the system and solenoid boost control has been restored once again.   Case closed 😂
    • The wideband reading is meaningless if it's not running. Why are you using shitty old sidefeeds on any engine, let alone a Neo? What manifold and fuel rail are you using to achieve that? Beyond that, can't help you with AEM stuff as I've never been their ECU/CAS combo.
    • Manual boost controllers (where a little of the boost was bled off) were quite common back in the day, because they were cheap and easy. Generally they had a manual adjustment screw rather than being fixed like yours. Down side is they always bleed boost, not just when you want them to so an electronic boost controller that uses a solenoid will have less lag.
    • Hello , im new here and i have A31 home build  RB25det neo stock eng / turbo  aem ems 2 blue connector  aem 3.5 map aem cas disk aem wideband connected to ecu  355 lph pump 550 nismo yellow injectors side feed aftermarket regulator  and won’t start with base aem tuner basic tune eventually flipped cas 180 degree so it triggers on correct stroke not in exhaust cycle  Now it won’t start Wideband reads 10 and 11 at lowest fuel setting  and will share calibrations soon for aem tuner i think something is wrong in aem tuner    please if you have any information, am very grateful
