Hi guys

A few of the NSW members have asked me to see if it is feasable to run a hillclimb style course through a section of Old Pacific Highway (Old pac, or Old road), now i know this sounds like a huge task, but i understand the East Coast Targa ran a section of their event through there, which is great for clubs looking to do this in the future, as its been approved once before so hopefully should be easy to get approved again

So, does anyone have an info they can share to help me make this thing work?

Such as contacts, old East Coast info etc? Or if anyone knows who i should speak to in order to get it approved again, that would be great aswel !

This event would be open to other clubs not only SAU if it can be organized and approved

Thanks everyone :P

Good stuff for looking to give it a go. But, before looking to closely into it i suggest you get a copy of the CAMS manual and look into the car modifications required to be able to run a car. I doubt there would be more then 3 or 4 NSW members with cars that fit the regulations.

Also, the amount of road closures required, the number of volunteers needed, and of course you will need CAMS officials to help out with their time as Cheif Stewards etc etc.

Nothing is impossible, but i think you will find its improbable.

Perhaps speak to someone form the MG Car Club in Newcastle, they do a Hill Climb every year on what i understand is a public road. But the road doesnt see anywhere near the traffic of the Old Pacific Highway.

But good luck with it. Perhaps it may be easier to look at running at the hill climb they run at Bathurst every year

Thanks for the kind words :D

Yeah ive been asked by some of the members to see if it can be done, so i thought i would see if it could be

As far as your CAMS points go, yes it wont be easy, and it need be, the event could be sub let to another club to make it easier

Cheers

Be aware as it's a public road it won't fall under the hill climb regulations (Speed Events - Section 10 in the CAMS manual) but instead will be under the Road Rally events which is Section 11 - which is a total bitch.

Good luck but you are in for a lot if you want to go ahead with it.

Steve - I'll bring the CAMS Manual with me on Monday and we can start from there.

yeah if you could that would be great :D Ive misplaced mine.....

i have bunch of old emails with some contact details from the east coast targa folk, if thats useful...

May be, thanks for the offer, i will let you know >_<

Cheers for the headsup, but the reason i figured it "could" work, is that the huntly hillclimb is also a public road - and 8 climbs happen there every year, same goes for Mt Panorama (but of course they're used to it up there) :)

they already run 2 Hillclimb events a year on the Old Pacific HWY at Bulahdelah, including a round of the NSW Hillclimp Championship.

Noosa Historic Hillclimb also runs on a Public road, and there are many "Street Sprints" in SEQ, also Speed Events. King Edward Park Hillclimb also springs to mind as being on a public road.

sorry, didn't sound like you knew there were already Hillclimbs running on the Old Pacific HWY just north of Sydney. Why not just enter one of those events that are already up and running?

absolutely. We only have the Mt Cotton Hillclimb up here. Apart from that, there is a annual event at Noosa, but its run by the Historic Racing Car Club, and its hard to get in these days. I've run it in the past and its a great piece of road.

By comparison, NSW have a very good variety of Hillclimb venues. I'll be trying to get into the KEP event this Oct, it's one of the iconic hillclimbs

I bumped into one of the guys from the club that runs the Bulladelah hillclimb last year on the way back from the Bathurst Speed Weekend, when I had to stop at Karuah for a puncture repair on the trailer. He said they always run a couple of events a year there - that's where I got my info which is obviously out of date now. Shame its down to a single event...

hrd-hr30 the Tamworth hillclimb is coming up soon too :spank:

I'd love to see SAU run a hillclimb on the old pac, good luck. In the meantime the bulladelah old pac hillclimb is probably the fastest one on the NSW calendar already (I'm sure Neil could confirm he has done more of them than anyone else on here)

do you know what the track at Tamworth is like? I haven't heard much about it. Any more details, like the date or club?

and if SAU NSW do run a hillclimb on the old highway, I'll be there!

tamworth hillclimb details are here:

I haven't spoken to anyone who has done it directly, but at least it is closer to QLD than most of the hillclimb events >_<

thanks Duncan. July 8-9 is a bit close, and I've decided to park the car for a while until I've got the camber sorted out and fixed a few general maintenance items like rear subframe bushes and a split cv boot. Money I would have spent on entry fees will go into the car for the next few months. Unless someone buys my HR30 coupe, then I'll be back in business!

I normally do one interstate event towards the end of the year. Its become a bit of a tradition. I've got some mates in NSW that run at Bathurst Speed Weekend, so that's normally where I end up. And having done it in my old IPRA 2L Datsun 1200, I was dying to take the GTR there when i got that last year. It was actually my first event in the car :) I want to try some of the other famous hillclimb venues around the place - like King Edward Park.

Yeah the speedweekend is an excellent meet, 2 days at bathurst...mmmmm...

be aware I think this year the speedweekend is also the national hillclimb champs so entries will fill up pretty quick.....don't delay ;)

  • 2 weeks later...

The Dutton Rally guys must be close to putting a similar event together as they have already sent out teasers to past entrants--- I believe it will run up to the "Pie in the sky" ie towards MT White from the Brooklyn Bridge end.

Ive done East Coast targa 4 times the last 3 years included stages on the Pac Highway The easiest one to organise is their old "prologue "stage from Brooklyn Bridge south up towards Cowan as few properties get in the way and its a fast stage. Quinn did it in 2.25 mins I did 2.42 for 7th fastest in a Datto Other stages to the North [almost to Kariong] will be more difficult as per previous comments. If you are still interested I have contacts for ex East Coast organisers -- local Police Commander is/was a Rev Head that helps a lot

    • Cheers. Skyline is back on the menu, can’t get rid of it. It’s like a child you don’t want, or herpes
    • I got back to Japan in January and was keen to get back on track as quickly as possible. Europe is god-awful for track accessibility (by comparison), so I picked up a first-gen GT86 in December just to have something I could jump into right away. The Skyline came over in a container this time and landed in early January. It was a bit battered after Europe, though—I refused to do anything beyond essential upkeep while it was over there. The clutch master cylinder gave out, and so did the power steering. I didn’t even bother changing the oil; it was the same stuff that went in just before I left Japan the first time. Naughty. Power steering parts would’ve cost double with shipping and taxes, so knowing I’d be heading back to Japan, I just postponed it and powered through the arm workout. It took a solid three months to get the car back on the road. Registration was a nightmare this time around. There were a bunch of BS fees to navigate, and sourcing parts was a headache. I needed stock seats for shaken, mistakenly blew 34k JPY on some ENR34 seats—which, of course, didn’t fit—then ended up having the car’s technical sheet amended to register it as a two-seater with the Brides. Then there’s the GT86. Amazing car. Does everything I want it to do. Parts are cheap, easy to find, and I don’t care what anyone says—it’s super rewarding to drive. I’ve done a few basic mods: diff ratio, coilovers, discs, pads, seat, etc. It already had a new exhaust manifold and the 180kph limiter removed, so I assume it’s running some kind of map. I’ve just been thrashing it at the track non-stop—mostly Fuji Speedway now, since I need something with higher speed after all that autobahn time. The wheels on the R34 always pissed me off—too big, and it was a nightmare getting tires to fit properly under the arches. So I threw in the towel and bought something that fits better. Looks way cleaner too (at least to me)—less hotboy, less attention-seeking. Still an R34, though. Now for future plans. There are a few things still outstanding with the car. First up, the rear subframe needs an overhaul—that’s priority one. Next, I need to figure out an engine rebuild plan. No timeline yet, but I want to keep it economical—not cutting corners, just not throwing tens of thousands at a mechanic I can barely communicate with. And finally, paint. Plus a bit of tidying up here and there.
    • Nope, needed to clearance under the bar a little with a heat gun, a 1/2" extension as the "clearancer", and big hammer, I was aware of this from the onset, they fit a 2.0 with this intake no problems, but, the 2.5 is around 15mm taller than a 2.0, so "clearancing" was required  It "just" touched when test fitting, now, I have about 10mm of clearance  You cannot see where it was done, and so far, there's no contact when giving it the beans Happy days
    • It's been a while since I've updated this thread. The last year (and some) has been very hectic. In the second-half of 2024 I took the R34 on a trip through Germany, Italy, France and Switzerland - it was f*cking great. I got a little annoyed with the attention the car was getting around Europe and really didn't drive it that much. I could barely work on the car since I was living in an inner-city apartment (with underground parking). During the trip, the car lost power steering in France - split hose - and I ended up driving around 4,000kms with no power steering.  There were a few Nurburgring trips here and there, but in total the R34 amassed just shy of 7,000kms on European roads. Long story short, I broke up with the reason I was transferred to Europe for and requested to be moved back to Japan. The E90, loved it. It was a sunk cost of around EUR 10,000 and I sold it to a friend for EUR 1,500 just to get rid of it quickly. Trust me, moving countries f*cking sucks and I could not be bothered to be as methodical as I was the first time around.
