Damn, that seems like such a little thing but I swear it's exactly the kind of little thing that would give me the shits after weeks of use.

Ditto :)

Do you have the same prob with the justjap one Richard?

yeah, it probably extends the wheel towards you (and away from the idicator stalk) about 80mm all up. doesn't really bother me. But it means you will have to take your hand off the wheel to indicate.

I got one mainly for the fact that it brings the wheel closer and I don't have to have my legs crouched under the steering wheel column to get a decent reach.

The horn has contact switches on the both parts of the lock kit.

I can't notice any play in the wheel although the quality doesn't seem to be 100% as it is a little rough in the finishes, but nothing structually

wrong with it. Check them out on ebay, they are made bt D1 spec and I got mine for about $70 (from just jap on ebay)

do these have provision for the horn button wiring?

Yes. It's a complicated system of brass fittings and contact points.... lol

Seriously it's just like an 'extention' of the same thing they use on aftermarket horn buttons.

I've sat in a car with one of these before. I can reach the indicator stalk fine, but I have crazy long fingers.

TRUE

Get the misses to hold it :P

Ha ha, yeah that's what handbags are for! But if you were at someone's place you could always take it inside. If you were at a shopping centre you could probably hide it underneath the carpet in the boot that covers the spare wheel. It's a bit of an extra hassle though.

I bought a chargespeed quick release system which has a ball type lock and its very tight...there is almost no play what so ever. I did however buy a D1 version initially but i returned it for the chargespeed as it had quite a bit of play and moved around way to much for my liking... just my 2 cents.

look, there is nothing majorly wrong with the just jap ones. think about it. a 'proper' splined one costs around $350. a just jap one costs under $100. So it's a bit unreasonable to expect it to be perfect. With the ball lock there will always be a tiny bit of play. other than that they are fine. the fact they move the wheel 10cm back is a given, every brand does that. like I said I have 3 (but I've also bought another one for a mate). 2 of the 3 have seen track use, and 1 of the 3 has been used for probably 200laps at 5 race meets + practice days in 12 months. it's not as tight as it was, but it hasn't let us down in any way either. and it means I can get into the seat without having to swan dive through the opening in the roll cage.

key points:

* yes you will need an aftermarket wheel AND boss kit (so if you want to keep factory wheel, or have an airbag wheel, it's not for you)

* yes it spaces the steering wheel further towards you (so most likely you will need to take your hand off the wheel slightly to use indicators)

* yes it's most likely illegal for street use (but so is probably 3/4 of your aftermarket parts)

* yes if you can afford it one with a spline system is better (but more than 3 times the price)

* BUT, if it's what you want the just jap ones cannot be beaten for value for money. I would not have bought 3 more after the first one if they were sh1t.

here endeth the lesson!

I was under the impression it was legal to remove an airbag wheel if the airbag was optional in the first place?

Im sure i read that on boostcruising forums one day....

no. If a car was factory fitted with an air-bag wheel, it cannot be replaced with a non-airbag wheel.

  • 2 months later...

I spoke to the RTA on this, and if the airbag was an option or if the car continues to comply with ADRs (for padding and size etc) after the removal it is legal in NSW, i have a GTR and they said it is legal for me to remove the wheel in it and swap it for a non airbag one

  • 4 weeks later...

if your car was delivered from factory (option or standard equipment) you cannot replace it with a non air bag wheel. i have a series 1 r33. while airbag was an option my car was not ever fitted with one. i can fit a tennis racket if i like.

as long as its the right diameter and all that lol

    • Don't even try to run it on the stock ECU if you're going to have the boost controller bring boost above ~10 psi. I've already told you that. If you use the Nistune ECU, you will need to CAREFULLY read the available documentation for Neo tuning, and read some threads on the Nistune forums, to discover the various things you have to do to prevent the ECU from going bananas when the boost is too high. The is a table associated with th boost sensor that must be modified to prevent it from shitting the bed. This is just one of the things that you will need to do to the tune in Nistune, because the Neo turbo ECU will be expecting to see a number of things (such as the TCS) that are not there, and you have to block the DTCs on those. It is totally not surprising to me that you are having the problems that you are, but the solutions to these problems have been known for >15 years. So just get it done.
    • Hi. Sry iam not a mechanic and iam not at the car atm so i dont know 100% but they told they measure those and even try to change those. AFM they have two. Coils are new a they have my old one too. Plugs too. ECU...we have 25 NEO stock and Nistune 25 NEO.   But i dont know if any one those could be the problem and why/if/what can cause this, Only thing they did not check is fuel...but that walbro 255 is new(like 1,5 years)... That fuel pressure gauge idk...but i let them know Any suggestions?   EDIT: how can they know if it is like you say he ECU pull power when it reaches a specific boost level that is too high? Tha car has boost controler
    • Can you clarify what you mean by boost cut, do you mean it misfires both when under load (driving) and when stationary and out of gear? Or does the ECU pull power when it reaches a specific boost level that is too high (boost control issue)? Does it occur at idle with no throttle? When you say "the ECU is OK", what ECU is it and why do you think it is OK? Have you used the NEO ECU, and if so do you have a MAP sensor attached? Same for the AFM, why do you think it is OK? Do you have any way to put a fuel pressure gauge on it (even just a mechanical one between the fuel filter and fuel rail)?
