Hey all,

Im looking for an intercooler for my car at the moment. But I have been thinking, because I will be putting in a pod, would it be better off if i put in an r34 side mount intercooler? Would this fit the R33? And most importantly would this be legal (considering that I am going to have a pod filter running too)? Obviously the power gains wont be as good as a FMIC, but roughly what will I be looking at if my car was running an aftermarket turbo back exhaust, pod and the r34 side mount intercooler?

Thanks all for your advice :D

Edit - is there any other decent side mount intercoolers that are worth looking at (as well as legal)?

R34 intercooler is supposed to be a good mod for mild power increases as it's thicker than the R33 item.

As for legality, you'd run into more problems with the pod than the R34 IC - you can't pick it as different from stock. A pod will suck hot air in anyway, get a heat shield.

you're allowed 1 intake mod...so technically even with the R34 smic, you'd be breaking that rule...chances of getting caught for it however are slim to nil, as its a side mount, and they wont look for it...

as for power gains, there wont be any. an intercooler doesnt increase power, it allows you to increase the boost while keeping the intake temp down...

having said all that, if im not mistaken, R34 smic's are good for 200rwkw, so if thats the limit of you're power goal, it'll suit you fine.

Hmmm....is that right? Man, i been told the wrong information then! I was told to get the intercooler to get more power out of it....atleast thats what the guy who was trying to sell me an intercoolr told me.....lucky i didnt buy it! :D

In that case - how much power can the stock r33 cooler take? I am only looking for around 200rwkws - so my plans for mods (aside from teh exhaust that i already have) was to put a pod and a decent sidemount intercooler. I havent started looking at the ecu yet - but I think with those 3 mods it shoudl easily get up to 170/180rwkws right?

well the guy was either spinning shit, to make a sale/profit, or you misunderstood what he was saying...

a fmic is a supporting mod...in order to increase the boost, you need to improve the cooling side of things...

R34 side mount will be right for 200rwkw from what i've read...

the mods you listed (exhaust, pod and an upgraded cooler) you'd be looking at around 160rwkw, as the cooler wont increase power on its own, and the pod wont really add power either...

the cooler is there to allow you to increase the boost while not melting stuff :D

having said that, with the stock ECU, you can't really go past 10psi without an safc etc at the least...the stock ECU will go into spastic mode above 10psi, and you'll probably end up losing power ;)

id be interesed in the airtemp in and out when using the r34 smic @ 200rwkw

has anyone done any testing to find out what the values are? id be interested for curiosity purposes. i think one of the bottlenecks could be ducting to the smic in the stock lcoation.

also, for the cost of a fmic these days ($349 from more than 1 trader) is it worth getting an r34 smic?...say you decide one day you want to push past 200rwkw....you're going to have to replace it again anyway...

id be getting a fmic, and ditching the pod in exchange for the stock airbox and a hi-flow panel filter.

well id say you can answer it paul

my cars stock bar a 3" exhaust....

in general though, add a 3" from turbo back, a fmic, and an safc in order to override the fact that the ECU doesnt like going over 10psi, and you can expect 180-190rwkw...

might want to start thinking about supporting mods before going for that sort of power...simple things like an upgraded fuel pump to lessen the chance of your car going boom ...

with a pfc, dont expect much more max power, but better driveability and a more complete tune...

Jeez, thats a lot to do my friend! Maybe I shoudl wait till end of the year and have a good look at things, or just not modify anymore. I mean, my plan was to get max 200 rwkws. But I didnt know that other upgrades have to be done. Im now thinking whether or not its worth inputting money into a 10 year old car (as i said i might wait till end of the year till i finish my uni and all that before goin for the mods).

Hmmm.... you are starting to sound reasonable. Stop it at once !

But, really taking some time to think it through is worth alot of time and money in the long term. There are plenty of quite slow R33's out there mainly due to owners being 'bolt on boys'.

Hmmm...I hope you are not my brother! Cos thats almost exactly what he told me! hehe...yeah, i guess the only thing I want to fix are those stupid speakers!

Edit - the only thing i want to fix asap are the speakers - thats what i meant :P

Another one to consider but is on the pricey side is an ARC side mount.

Also I was wondering if you added a 34 cooler to a 33 how much more boost could you wind into it? Would 12psi be OK or would it suffer heat soak?

Chris

or an avo turbo front mount, using the original intercooler pipes, its dead easy to fit and no holes to cut!

ive got the usual bolt on crap

pfc

3" split dump exhaut

boost controller

fmic

fuel pump

heavy duty cluctch

for those saying the r34 smic is ok for drags, have you done testing to see what the in and out temp is on the core? ie: is it actually doing anything useful to 60deg temp air passing through it. i wouldn't expect a great deal of airflow to it, air usually takes the path of least resistance.

Dezz is on the money here.

If you plan to keep the stock turbo the R34 intercooler is your best option for 3 resons

- price

- ease of installation

- thottle responce

If you plan to upgrade your turbo down the track you may wont to go for something bigger

    • I have been being VERY quiet about what you're alluding to, as it is something that ticks me off... The number of cars from factory that run coil overs is HUGE! Most of them these days do... The other part that annoys me, is people saying "Well all the incabin adjustable suspension is illegal by blah blah blah"... If that's the case, then why can I buy a car brand new that can do it if, FULL STOP in cabin adjustable suspension is illegal...   Also, I could just chuck some aftermarket shocks in my car, throw the stock springs on, after my blue slip, dump my super low springs back in. Same shock and spring style setup... Hell, they could also be the same colour springs etc.     I'm voting, BlueSlipper didn't want to touch the above car for some reason. Whether it be some sort of bias against the car, the owner, them maybe having previously done dodgy shit and now they're being super careful in case they get slapped in the face by the Gumbyment again... Find a new blueslip place.   And can confirm as you had said, yes there are holy bibles of vehicle heights, and all sorts of other suspension stuff. Heck your run of the mill mechanic, and tyre shop has access to all of that stuff. It's how they do wheel alignments...
    • Funny story Heading to Sydney this morning on the HWY there was some slow traffic, so I gave it the beans and midway through my overtaking "power run" I lost all power It seems that I missed a hose clamp,  and the MAF and filter went WiFi To make this more problematic, the little tool kit that lives in the boot, is sitting in the sun room at Goulburn......LOL Luckily for me I found a bit of steel on the side of the road that could be used like a rusty and bent flat head screw driver to tighten it up enough that it got me into Sydney, it is now all tight like a tiger with the aid of a 8mm socket Note to self: Use my brain and double check stuff, and always keep that little tool kit in the car for when I have a brain fart
    • Oh, and as for everyone with their fuel economy changes, I switch between E10 and 98 in the company car. Even do when I had personal cars that could run on E10. You know what changed my fuel economy in any noticeable way? How I drove, and where I drove. Otherwise, say on full tanks of just back and forth from work only (So same trips, same sort of traffic), couldn't notice a difference that I can correlate to the type of fuel in use. In the current vehicle, that's over 42L of USABLE fuel. While 98 is all "more energy dense", it also has higher knock resistance as it takes more energy to get it to ignite too. The longer hydrocarbons, typically more tightly bound. So running the same ignition map, can also produce less power, if there isn't enough time to get it all burnt through properly, as yep, the flame propagation speed is different from lower octane fuel to higher (Higher has a lower flame propagation, due to the more tightly bound and harder to self ignite funs. This is also typically where, a vehicle that is designed purely to run on 91 (Whether it be E10 or normal 91) usually sees absolutely no real world difference in fuel economy for the normal man, woman, or dog.
    • We've got some servos around me that have 91 with E10, 91 (no E10), 95, and 98. At those stations the change from 91 E10 to 91, is typically around 8c/L.   But lets not get started on the price of fuel in Oz. It's ridiculous. All the service stations around me, bar one, the price of fuel has been over the $2 mark per litre for the cheapest, 98 being around $2.45. That one service station is a CostCo, fuel from it comes from the same refineries, and makes no pitstops, it runs great, including the 98. In fact, I've had no issues on CostCo fuel, but plenty of issues at other stations!. The CostCo fuel, was $1.65 roughly this week for 94 with E10. $1.88 for 98. Servos directly across from it, $2.10 for 91 E10, and $2.48 for 98. The part I had to laugh at? If I drive multiple HOURS away from Brisbane, say out near Nanango, or Kingaroy, or even out to Goondiwindi, the price of their fuel, is the same as what it is at the CostCo... Oh, and that BP servo at Goondiwindi is HUGE and goes through epic turnover of fuel, so it's not sitting there for weeks going to shit. And what blows me away, my mate is one of the people who drives the Fuel Tanker all around QLD, delivering to all those places. At the same company his previous role was doing the "local haul" deliveries... Same truck, same driver, same pickup point it all comes from. So you tell me, how the hell it is 60c/L CHEAPER for fuel, when nearly all else is equal, except they require a B-Double to drive half a day out of Brisbane, and half a day back, every second day, compared to the delivery that can be under 30 minutes drive from the fuel pickup point... Not to mention, go five blocks down the road, and Ampol to Ampol will vary 30c/L... And I've had this conversation with my mate... The way it's priced, is just typical, pure and utter rubbish... He also does runs from Brisbane, to all over QLD, down to Newcastle, Sydney, Nowra, Melbourne, Geelong, and even out to parts of the NT depending on the companies needs. His main stuff is all the longer distance away from home for a few days at a time, then when he's back, he loves to just pickup extra shifts wherever he can in whichever truck, hence all the weird different places.   Oh, as for getting E10 into all the fuels in Australia... It was very quickly highlighted, that we don't have enough biomass available to use to make E10 sustainably like they require, and it would dramatically cut into our, and the worlds food chain supply...   I vote we all just start running on liquid methane gas... Plenty of that just getting tapped off at tips from underground decay... (Note, this is pure just stupid commenting. I could very easily highlight the reasons its not a good idea especially on scale...)
    • Am I correct in assuming that the R35's are getting the classic skyline haircut off the odometer?  Quick search on carsales, there are 33 08 and 09 GTR's for sale, only 2 of them have more then 100,000km's on them (116,075 and 110,000 respectively).  And somehow there are about 25 for sale with around 60,000kms? Looks like the classic skyline haircut to me =/
