Hey People's,

I've recently sold my 180sx and in the market for a R34, have a few lined up to have a look at.

I searched the forum to do some research on common problems etc. but was unable to find anything helpful.

Just want to know what to look out for when getting one of these cars, I'm also a mechanic so I know how to check over cars, but just common problems that I should keep an eye out for.

Thanks for ya help.

Cheers

Josh

I did read through that, I'm a mechanic so i'm obviously going to check the things listed there.

But is there anything in particular that goes wrong with a r34?

I.E What is a safe boost level for the turbo's and injectors,

Are the lifters and injectors normally noisy?

etc.

Thanks for your help though

Cheers

Josh

you can have mine for 25,000 i'm in SA.

Are the turbo's aren't much good over 10psi or so.

The lifters don't really make any noise not like a gtr.

Coil packs seem to go around th 60,000 mark.

some small things like that.

Far out... is that what my problem could be?

http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/in...=116103&hl=

I did an ECU reset and it hasn't come on since then, however that was just 2 days ago. I just got a new 3" full exhaust and when I gun it it has this MASSIVE hesitation/stutter at around 5000rpm. The exhaust pops a little bit more than I think it should as well...

Excuse my lack of knowledge, but is the coil the thing that gives electrical power to the spark plugs? How much does it cost to replace these? And who would you get to do this? A Nissan dealer?

Any good way to confirm that this is the problem?

My R34 has only done 31,000kms (I do believe they are genuine - I paid big for this and have service history) but is a 1999.

Yeah the coilpacks are part of the system that delivers the charge to the spark plugs.

The cost to replace them with genuine items is over $1,000. What just about everyone does is replace them with similar coils called 'Splitfires' which are actually better, and cheaper. If you look around you can get them for $850 or even slightly less these days.

Yep seems like many 34 owners have the same problems with their coil packs. Apart from that dont think theres much things to worry about hance they arent that old compared to 32s which needs more attention.

I think thats a fairly common problem with RB twin cams. the coil packs get so hot under that cover. I had about 3 fail on my HR31 (obviously cos its old), and also when it had a late R32 engine in it.

The coil packs are as simple as changing the spark plugs. So anyone who has done that before can show you. I would, but I dont think you`re in my neighbourhood.

Are they really $1000? I remember for the RB20DET in my HR31 they were around $160, new. Are they a different unit?

Also, I have a question re: buying an R34. What options came from the factory? Cruise control, sunroof, dashboard gauges, etc.

Thanks.

Get onto perfectrun they do splitfire packs for very good prices, normally around $550 delivered.

Another problem with the auto's is the shift solenoids in the gearbox, these can start to breakdown...not as common as bloody coilpacks though! Also not very obvious until you find the car locking in 3rd gear a lot, until one day it never comes out!

    • What do you mean?  In between the two I shared?  They're the same boost   This will be insane.   A mate has a GTSt with a 9:1 RB30/25 with Tomei 256 cams and a Borg S362SX-E that is already a beast from the basement but has a stock 5 speed and will probably get a ZF8 one day.  After the G35 900 RB26 setup I'd be lying if the topic of "Wtf would a divided G35 be like on this thing?" idea hadn't come up - you'd definitely want a wide boost control range setup with it, as even with the less responsive and potent S361 we're having to ramp boost in from very low levels in the early gears.
    • ZF8 is faster, wider ratio spread, better in every way. I do not dispute this. But I have brain damage and I want the feeling of shifting gears. To me the extra work is fun, but I daily an automatic and in the US like 90+% of cars are automatic so a manual transmission is an "exotic" experience. If I want an automatic I've driven an F80 M3 with DCT more than a few times and it's incredibly capable but it's emotionally vacant to me.
    • Different folks for different folks I guess - for me, the 6MT > ZF8 claim is wild.  If I had a manual Skyline I'd be saving up fix that with a ZF8.  I went for a M135i, has the N55 which resolves a lot of the issues the N54 has, it already has the ZF8, is barely heavier than an R34 GTt, full boost before 2000rpm while also being real-word-faster than my old 280kw @ hubs R33 GTS25t and doing absolutely everything better.  There's nothing I'd change on it to be more like my old Skyline, tbh... it doesn't sound the same but it's got it's own awesome sound - definitely not worse.   To be fair I can't argue with most of those points.  I guess i was pointing it out as a comparison for a Skyline GTR and it's much closer all around there, like the weight difference between an M240i and an R34 GT-R isn't that much etc.   As above, I ended up getting an M135i which is in the 1400kg range - the M140 and M240is that you can get up till 2018 are B58, ZF8, RWD and in the 1400kg range which is a bit of fun... but doesn't fit the tyre etc of the Supra.  They are a run drive, though- maybe no an A90 Supra but a huge upgrade over a Skyline "sporty chassis" wise.
    • Im loving this thread. I have a g35/900 t4 split 1.00 ar going on my rb30/25 with 9:1 and 264 cams. its drive by wire and with vct i think it should spool nicely. I have the 8speed gearbox on the floor ready to go on so full boost changes will be a thing if the tyres can deal with it. it should always be on boost
    • The trouble for me is the automatic takes away so much from it. And the E92 has hydraulic power steering. Even after putting in an LSD you're looking at re-mapping the xDrive to be more like a Skyline which is just a lot of effort for something that is supposed to be easier and cheaper. I consider the E92 335i 6MT to basically be the obviously superior car to something like an R34 GTT. Half the price out here, the N54 makes so much more power so easily, is a far more refined car, etc. You do have to deal with the nightmare of the N54's foibles vs the B58 which is comparatively miles better and if a turbo does fail it's only one of them vs two and a lot less pipe spaghetti.  996 or 997 Turbo has the AWD system mapped like a Skyline. Basically always RWD unless engaging the front axle makes sense. A coworker let me drive his 997.2 Turbo 6MT and it's absolutely tremendous. I don't think I'd want more power in a street car.
