I am in the market for a new turbo for my RB25 ERC33, I had reason to ring GCG and while talking to their Sales Manager, Mark Landell, he mentioned that they can provide me with the internal wastegate Garrett GT3071R with a custom T3 turbine set up [they come out with a T28 std]. He reckoned this set up is a easy install bolt on equivalent of the HKS 2835proS.

Now I’m not knocking GCG, they have an enviable reputation and I've only got good things to say about they myself, and Mark is very likely a good man and knows his stuff. But he was a bit reserved when it came to talking up this turbo’s performance and likely power output. He reckoned 250rwkw was a good starting point and that maybe a bit more. This sort of threw me because the HKS 2835proS has figures quoted more like 300rwkw. And I’m already making 240rwkw with the turbo I’ve got, so I really want to upgrade, not move sideways.

I just wanted to see what everyone thought? I know discopotato has written some stuff on the 3071 external wastegate and is keen on an internal version, but is what GCG offering just such an animal, or is it something else/less.

The turbo GCG are selling has a 0.50 compressor cover, a 56 compressor wheel trim, and an 84 exhaust wheel trim and is rated at 450hp, but because it is new on the market, they really had no installed real time power output figure.

a 450hp wont throw you to 300rwkw.

Thats what I thought, but its like they are saying no it won't/yes it will. On one hand they put out a 450hp figure, and on the other they say it is the direct equivalent of the 2835proS? Ambivalent messages methinks!!!

putting the larger comp wheen into the stock turbo is a bad idea

GCG did this in thier "stage 2" hi-flow and ended up stopping it because of the surge issues etc.

You'll have to step up a frame to the GT30 series with the GT40 wheels if you want more than the GCG provides.

trident, if you are unsure whether it will outperform a HKS 2835 pro s (remembering that both the GT3071 & HKS 2835 pro s use a 71mm compressor) and then the only way to be sure would be to go the 76mm compressor.

if GCG are talking about the GT3071WG disco is going to try to talk you out of it as it has the cropped turbine, if it is new then it may be one of the new internally gated garrett housings.

ask about GT3076 that should give you a little more headroom or splash out on a HKS3037 (the HKS version of the 3076)

check atpturbo.com as they can supply a genuine GT30 internally gated turbine housing that you can mate to whatever combo takes your fancy.

Yes, I've looked at the Gt3076, I reckon it would be a better bet. If I got it with a T3 and a good exhaust turbine combo it would be close as.

If you read the first post, I state that the GT3071R is an internal. I really don't want to go to external, I believe that I can get everything I want out of a good internal wastegate.

And just to set the record straight don't want 300rwkw, but I want my turbo to be capable of it if I ever do want to. I am really only looking at around 270-280, the motor is untouched except for cams.

trident i read your first post and understand you want a internal gate. if you go thru the garrett catalogue they offered a GT3071WG with a cropped 56mm turbine, it is an internally gated turbo.

however it doesn't use a genuine GT30 turbine housing.

hopefully the one GCG are quoting is one of the new 'genuine' GT30 housings with 60mm turbine (not 56mm) and internal gate.

if it isn't you could order one from ATP and buy the rest locally.

No, they are offering a GT3071R with a custom turbine ie they replace the T28 with a T3, it is internally wastegated. It is a very new offering and not listed on their catalogue, I asked why I couldn't see it on their site as well and that was the reply. But overall I think it will be too small for me anyway, so have gone off the idea. going to have a yarn to Slide first and see what he can do..........[its only money, haven't touched 2009's wages yet..lol]

Yes I'd want to know the turbine dimensions not just its trim .

Just on the "cropped" GT30 turbine in the 2835 and 3071R-WG , its the GT28 exhaust housings that turn it all to shite not the turbine . The 2835 Pro S turbos use that turbine as well and they are not too bad but remember they use a GT30 based exhaust housing .

Before Garrett released their new GT30 and GT35 IW housings I was told GCG had been using some other T3 flanged IW housing but I not sure what type .

If it were me I'd be insisting on the real GT3071R with the full sized GT30 60mm 84 trim turbine . Garret now makes a propper GT30 IW T3 flanged exhaust housing and I would use nothing less on any GT30 turbine based turbo . Have a look at ATP's site at the REAL GT3071R , they don't mention "real" but its the one without the "WG" tacked on the end of it . The site shows a selection of exhaust housings so they can obviously sell it with the good IW GT30 housing .

Going off Garretts current numbering system a GT3071R is a GT30 turbine with a 71mm Major OD compressor . The GT3076R is same deal with a 76mm compressor instead . So 30 + 71m or 30 + 76mm - 3071 or 3076 .

Personal opinion but the GT30 turbine is struggling with the 56 trim 76mm wheel so response is compromised slightly . The 52 trim 76mm wheel works well but is only marketed by HKS I believe , called GT3037 52T .

The GT3071R is supposed to be a production version of Garretts competition only TR30R using their off (their) shelf wheels . In theory its good for 440 Hp but at high boost pressures .

By response I mean boost threshold as well as the transient response of the turbos rotating group .

is this the turbo that your refering too?? or similar. i have just purchased one with the .63 nissan housing on it but am yet to have it bolted up to see how it goes. it should be alright however for the moment im a lil sceptical about the 500hp rating on the turbo and obviously not gonna make that power on the .63 housing. having said that the reason i went for this turbo was that it was easy enough later off down the track to bolt on a .82 ex gate gt30 housing (funds wernt permitting when i purchased this turbo to eg gate setup.) and try for bigger power.

this is the turbo i have, its identical same antisurge comp cover and all, just the .63 nissan housing.

    • Who did you have do the installation? I actually know someone who is VERY familiar with the AVS gear. The main point of contact though would be your installer.   Where are you based in NZ?
    • Look, realistically, those are some fairly chunky connectors and wires so it is a reasonably fair bet that that loom was involved in the redirection of the fuel pump and/or ECU/ignition power for the immobiliser. It's also fair to be that the new immobiliser is essentially the same thing as the old one, and so it probably needs the same stuff done to make it do what it has to do. Given that you are talking about a car that no-one else here is familiar with (I mean your exact car) and an alarm that I've never heard of before and so probably not many others are familiar with, and that some wire monkey has been messing with it out of our sight, it seems reasonable that the wire monkey should be fixing this.
    • Wheel alignment immediately. Not "when I get around to it". And further to what Duncan said - you cannot just put camber arms on and shorten them. You will introduce bump steer far in excess of what the car had with stock arms. You need adjustable tension arms and they need to be shortened also. The simplest approach is to shorten them the same % as the stock ones. This will not be correct or optimal, but it will be better than any other guess. The correct way to set the lengths of both arms is to use a properly built/set up bump steer gauge and trial and error the adjustments until you hit the camber you need and want and have minimum bump steer in the range of motion that the wheel is expected to travel. And what Duncan said about toe is also very true. And you cannot change the camber arm without also affecting toe. So when you have adjustable arms on the back of a Skyline, the car either needs to go to a talented wheel aligner (not your local tyre shop dropout), or you need to be able to do this stuff yourself at home. Guess which approach I have taken? I have built my own gear for camber, toe and bump steer measurement and I do all this on the flattest bit of concrete I have, with some shims under the tyres on one side to level the car.
    • Thought I would get some advice from others on this situation.    Relevant info: R33 GTS25t Link G4x ECU Walbro 255LPH w/ OEM FP Relay (No relay mod) Scenario: I accidentally messed up my old AVS S5 (rev.1) at the start of the year and the cars been immobilised. Also the siren BBU has completely failed; so I decided to upgrade it.  I got a newer AVS S5 (rev.2?) installed on Friday. The guy removed the old one and its immobilisers. Tried to start it; the car cranks but doesnt start.  The new one was installed and all the alarm functions seem to be working as they should; still wouldn't start Went to bed; got up on Friday morning and decided to have a look into the no start problem. Found the car completely dead.  Charged the battery; plugged it back in and found the brake lights were stuck on.  Unplugging the brake pedal switch the lights turn off. Plug it back in and theyre stuck on again. I tested the switch (continuity test and resistance); all looks good (0-1kohm).  On talking to AVS; found its because of the rubber stopper on the brake pedal; sure enough the middle of it is missing so have ordered a new one. One of those wear items; which was confusing what was going on However when I try unplugging the STOP Light fuses (under the dash and under the hood) the brake light still stays on. Should those fuses not cut the brake light circuit?  I then checked the ECU; FP Speed Error.  Testing the pump again; I can hear the relay clicking every time I switch it to ON. I unplugged the pump and put the multimeter across the plug. No continuity; im seeing 0.6V (ECU signal?) and when it switches the relay I think its like 20mA or 200mA). Not seeing 12.4V / 7-9A. As far as I know; the Fuel Pump was wired through one of the immobiliser relays on the old alarm.  He pulled some thick gauged harness out with the old alarm wiring; which looks to me like it was to bridge connections into the immobilisers? Before it got immobilised it was running just fine.  Im at a loss to why the FP is getting no voltage; I thought maybe the FP was faulty (even though I havent even done 50km on the new pump) but no voltage at the harness plug.  Questions: Could it be he didnt reconnect the fuel pump when testing it after the old alarm removal (before installing the new alarm)?  Is this a case of bridging to the brake lights instead of the fuel pump circuit? It's a bit beyond me as I dont do a lot with electrical; so have tried my best to diagnose what I think seems to make sense.  Seeking advice if theres for sure an issue with the alarm install to get him back here; or if I do infact, need an auto electrician to diagnose it. 
    • Then, shorten them by 1cm, drop the car back down and have a visual look (or even better, use a spirit level across the wheel to see if you have less camber than before. You still want something like 1.5 for road use. Alternatively, if you have adjustable rear ride height (I assume you do if you have extreme camber wear), raise the suspension back to standard height until you can get it all aligned properly. Finally, keep in mind that wear on the inside of the tyre can be for incorrect toe, not just camber
