Depends.

Expect the car too have had some accident damage, but really, if there is no chassis or alingement damage then who cares.

- Obviously you'd care if your after a show car.

If the chassis is fair then most everything else is replacable. You just need too factor in the cost (and labour if you can't do it yourself) too bring the car upto standard.

Personally, if you after a car your going thrash, do track days in, then I'd be looking for a bargin high kay car and bargin the owner down too a cost where you can afford repairs.....

Basically 98% of them are wound back. A 1989 GTR with 40,000 less k's than my 1999 GTT? I don't think so.

You buy on a condition based appraisal. That's why with imports it's worth having them checked out by a workshop that does work on these types of cars regularly. If it costs you $1000 in workshop inspections before you find one and then you end up NOT rebuilding the engine, you have saved yourself at least $6000.

Low km GTRs exist. Granted mine is a 1997 model but it only has 32k on it. :( Knowning who owned it since 1999 helps verify that though.

If you are unsure check seats, steering wheel, handbrake, pedals etc for wear. It's pretty obvious when a car has done a lot of kms. Low km cars from Japan are around, I imported a 1985 RX7 with only 45k on it, was practically brand new under build up from being unused. You just have to be careful and know where to look.

The one in the trader for $18.5k with 128k on it looks nice, tidy and honest.

or demand 6-8 grand off the price......if they don't agree.....walk away....

once you get the car take it apart and rebuild it with that 6-8grand.....sit back and relax and never have to worry about broken engine again.....:(

I have heard that if the plenum chamber is not flaked and missing paint that it is a good sign that the motor has not seen high kilometres. Would anybody have any other views or experiences?

Yeah I have seen a few that have been resprayed. They have often been done badly so is easy to pick (can see where different layers of paint begin and end).

what other components would you repair ?

A lot of other things that are perishable and wear out over time... Time isn't kind to all sorts of parts to cars. Can happen with kms on them or not.

I wouldnt buy a 32 from Japan in todays day.

Its just too risky and can end up costing you a lot more.

Buy something thats already here, that you can have inspected by a local expert. You stand a better chance of getting a good car that isnt clapped out that way

one of the 1988 cefiro's we imported came with 12000kms or so on it. It also came with a log book that had been filled in at the same Nissan dealership every 6 months (hehe was odd, their seal changed as the Nissan logo evolved). It even came with the factory lace doileys and original purchase reciepts etc in the owner's name.

Was such a bizzare car... we didn't believe it so we had a mechanic go check the car while it sat in japan, and found that it actually was hardly ever driven... So the rare ones do exist.

Not necessarily, the paint flakes off as its not bonded well to the plenum from the factory. Simple heating and cooling causes it to seperate, regardless of the km's its done.

Basically as the guys above stated, go by the condition of the car, don't believe the kms. If the car is in Japan, get it inspected first, if its local, then take it for a test drive from a cold start. Take the car to a mechanic who works on GTR's to have it inspected.

I have a car lined up with a knock in the bottom end and the mechanic selling it says I have a choice of a low km engine or a reconditioned unit from Japan . He will install engine and repair minor rust spots .Its got 17inch aftermarket rims ,adj coilover suspension. Does this sound like a better option than a Jap car?

    • I don't think the shuffle can damage the turbos. It only happens at low shaft speeds and loads. It's just annoying (to some people - others are tickled by the effect) and it quite possibly reduces spool performance a little bit.
    • Oh dear. The panel beating needs to be done before the filler work. Do you have a photo of the dent before you started? Hard enough to not flex and only hit the high spots?  What do you mean it was just temporary?

    • I appreciate the detailed explanation, think I understand now. I spent the better part of last night reading what I could about shuffle and potential solutions. I had replaced the OEM twin turbo pipe with an alternate Y pipe that is separated further away from the turbo. The current one is from HKS and I had a previous pipe that was separated even further away, both have shuffle. I had heard that a divider can be welded in to the OEM pipe to remove turbulence, and figure that aftermarket pipes that are more separated would achieve the same thing. From what I read, most people with -10 turbos get shuffle due to their size, though it's a bit less common with -5s on a standard RB26. I think Nismoid mentioned somewhere it's because OEM recirculation piping is common in Australia with -5 cars. It seems that the recommendation tends to vary between a few options, which I've ordered in what I think is most feasible for me:  1. Retune the MAP or boost controller to try to eliminate shuffle 2. Install OEM recirculation piping 3. Something called a 'balance pipe' welded onto the exhaust manifolds. I don't know if kits for this are available, seems like pure fabrication work 4. simply go single turbo My current layout is as follows: Garrett 2860 -5s HKS Racing Suction intake MAF delete pipes HKS racing chamber intake piping hard intercooler piping,  ARC intercooler HKS SSQV BOV and pipe Haltech 2500 elite ECU and boost solenoid/controller HPI dump pipes OEM exhaust manifolds HKS VCAM step 1 and supporting head modifications Built 2.6 bottom end All OEM recirculation piping was removed, relevant areas sealed off I'll keep an eye out for any alternative solutions but can get started with this.  Only other question is, does shuffle harm the turbo (or anything else)? It seems like some people say your turbo shafts will explode because of the opposing forces after a while and others say they just live with it and adjust their pedal foot accordingly.
