it's not as simple as that... i wish it was... this is a big issue that's been discussed MANY times in the past... basically, the tuner is claiming the tune as his own personal "Intellectual Property" and therefore locking it so others can't access it (even though it would be completely useless to another person, even with a car with exactly the same mods as no 2 cars are the same)

the other side of the coin is you paid for his/her services, and effectively the right to own the tune as well.... so, as you can see, it opens up a whole can of worms as to who is in the right and who is in the wrong etc.

I have dealt with Rob quite a few times and found him to be very knowledgable. He is usually willing to help at the drop of a hat and I've never heard of any complaints about him before.

The old owners, however, were a different story. They had no idea. New owners are quite friendly.

The PowerFC doesn't have a locking facility from what I understand so it wouldn't matter anyway. I do know that if someone wanted to charge me $1000 for an unlock code, I would laugh at them in the face. I have had similar issues with Bob Romano with the Rotary so I just emailed Microtech and they sent me out a base map and the procedure to wipe the previous map. Cost me nothing. It just seems strange 101 would charge $1000 for something like this and in my opinion there has to be another side to the story.

Simple fact is that they do great work, they are extremely good at tuning cars and Rob is friendly and helpful. If you want to know more, ask them yourself.....ring Rob (Don't bother dealing with the guys that answer the phone).

I would be using matty spry from PITS on the gold coast over paul masterson/motec qld/stafford tune (all same) after my experience. weeks and $$$ @ motec. Bad experience with stafford tune, big drama. PITS diagnosed in 20secs over the phone, although others have had good experience with Stafford Tune.

Thats interesting if you have a chance could you pm me with your dramas i would like to know what happened as i have been going to Paul at Stafford tune for years.

OK

Moderation time...

I think i should copy and paste my responce when these threads come along...

Let me make a couple of points...

1. This is a forum with free speach so speak your mind.

2. Beware your words may offend others and in some cases could have legal potholes.

3. This is th emost important one... For every good story you hear about a work shop you hear a bad one...

As for this thread, im not going to close it as it provides the communication phee is entitled to have. Those who disagree with phee please feel free to speak your minds also.

Dont just pm me to close the thread cause their mates of yours or you had a good experience with this company... If you had a thread telling other of your bad experience how whould you like it if a moderator closed it...

My personall advice, I aways say live and learn. There is no point in banging your head against a wall. I have been ripped off by 2 company's in the past few years when it comes to my car, but at the end of the day I will simply not ever use them again...

Im glad you have shared your experience with 101...

Im also glad that others have shared their good experiences...

Yes guys we all know Matt is the god of tuning anything but for someone who lives in Darwin Matt is sorta useless...

Thank You

hmm all i did was ask :( had no idea this tread would turn into a workshop bash..

I agree with what col said. Everyone has their own experiences, so i guess bottom line for me is stick to the place i have been to before and know well even though they have caused me grief in the past, or take aleap of faith on a new workshop and be prepared that it might be going from the frypan to the fire.

The sad truth is that if you are happy with the service you receive, you will usually only tell 1-3 people. If you are unhappy with the service you receive, you will tell 10-15 people.

I think all of us need to take a step back every now and then and ask ourselves how we are acting as consumers or customers. I have had work done by people before that I was severely disappointed in, I don't go around bagging them out but I do tell anyone who asks what my experience was (which is what has been done with this thread).

It is impossible to please 100% of the people 100% of the time. You will always have disgruntled customers at some stage. And as far as I can see, only one person has anything bad to say from ACTUAL EXPERIENCE.

I can't speak for their coffee making skills, however.

You want coffee Dan... Go to the coffee club...

I can vouch for the quality of their work and have only had good experiences with them...

Particually the Aspley & Cannon Hill shops... They serve their latte's at the correct 65 degres...

I am not here to change anyones mind about 101. Noone here knows who I am so I doubt anyone would pay much attention if I started being abusive about them, however this thread was started asking opinions on 101. I was PM'ed about this thread asking if I wanted to have my say heard. I haven't said they do a shit job entirely, I have said from my experience, they could have done a LOT better and from what I experienced with them, I don't recommend them.

Reading your above post, you haven't had any problems with the workshop you have been going to, so why move somewhere else. IMO don't try to fix something that isn't broken? :P

well my current workshop i do have problems with scheduling of work that i've had done in the past (eg: had car booked in for things, brought car in on day of booking only to be turned away because they were 'busy' with other jobs, a 2 day job turned into a week that sort of thing) and also location (i'm on the far southside of brisbane but my workshop is on the northside.

In terms of the work they have done on my car i cannot personally fault it, it might be a bit pricey in comparison to other places but thats about it, (although other members of this forum have certainly had their problems), and i guess that is the main thing in the end - so long as the job is done right..

hey every1, its not about making money its the whole principal. ppl do not disclose they'r tuning ability and therefore passwords. send the computer 2 motec get it unlocked and and tune it again and see if it comes out half as good on the same settings, boost and a/f ratio etc. if its not the same as it was then u hav ur answer, i know ben (the previous owner of this vehicle) and that can was making 390hp on 1.1bar of boost running a flat 12:1 air fuel ratio. if thats not tuning then i dont know wat all u experts know on here. half u guys dont know wtf ur going on about, we got idiots talking about countries with heaps of oil, the fact of the matter is, u can get the password along with the tuning intelligence if u pay but no u decide to go bag every1 and all ur little mates join in. think wat u will but some of the fasters cars on the street and andra record holders came out of 101 and the work is 100% quality. u pay for wat u get, pay bananas get monkey. u want results go to 101.

Too true Varun. I know if I'd spent countless hours tuning a car to perfection, I wouldn't want some half-wit picking it apart and messing with everything. It is a completely simple matter to send the ECU back to MOTEC or whoever and have it unlocked. The other matter is one of policy, if you are going to put a warranty on your engines and tuning then you would make it your company policy to password protect your investment. You would also make it policy to not give out that password to anyone for any reason. I mean, after all, how does the tuner know the person on the other end of the PHONE is genuine and not just scamming some stupid story so he can mess with the tune. Policy is there for a reason and if you start breaking it for one person, soon you'll be breaking it for all people.

I bought a m4 pro, which was locked, called motec and had it unlock in 5 min, it was only going to be a problem if i wanted to use the same map, but if your tunner knows what he is doing, he would want to do a new map, i could list 20 workshop that all lock maps, its nothing new.

Anyway used 101 a few times, never had any problems, they do have alot of cars doing good time down the quarter now too, so its just not dyno hp

Edited by zuboo

because clearly good quarters says alot. Anyone can go fast at drags...just need lots of money.

About the whole principal...you want someone who now owns the car to pay you some obscene amount of money so they can get it retuned to a more then likely better state. Especially if they have modified the car further? What makes you so good? Or what makes you think your so good?

    • Nah that is not actually a lot. Just painting my GTR frontend and the little bits to make sideskirts/nismo flare pieces work correctly/fit on the sedan/mount up correctly came to about $7000. Is it a lot? Sure. None of this is economical. Economy would be shelling the car and buying a 2010 Corolla to commute in. The perspective of all of this is different.
    • I have the re003s’ on my 06 XT Forester Turbo and I highly rate them for street wet and dry
    • I don't see any issues here. I've been saying all along this is a big job, the price reflects that.  When the car comes back perfect I'm sure it will feel like money well spent.
    • Remember, take original quote. Double it. Then add a bit more. It's how any project goes.
    • So, I started this repair and got as far as "fixing" the holes with some fibreglass. God all those years working on boats came back quickly. I decided I'd reach out to some rust guys just to see what they would say about it. I came across a guy about 40 mins away and went to see him. He said the windscreen needs to come out, that there might be some more bits around the windscreen and he'd quote them at the time. But his quote was $300 to remove and replace windscreen and $3k for the damage he can see. He said he could respray the roof for $1200 and the bonnet for another $800 (somebody has previously rattle canned it, its horrendous). This is $5300 + any small additional bits. It's a lot, I get that and the name of one of my fave youtube channels 'Not Economically Viable' comes to mind.  I'm not being financially rational, but I've taken him up on the quote. He's opening a new shop in November with more room, so we're waiting for that. I'll leave the currently missing headliner out until then. I'm looking forward to it being fixed and having the paint looking nice again (lots of clear coat issues on the roof too). / flame suit on.
