I dont understand, if its primarily a track car, why are you painting it? A light coat of paint on the front will be fine, if paint was that bad for heat exchange, radiators wouldn't have been painted for all those years, XR6's and gtr's have black painted coolers from the factory, and it takes 10 years for the paint to flake off, just give it a bit of etch primer on the end tanks.

Ok, so lets say i Anodise the FMIC...

Question: Would there be any ill effects by painting the IC piping black? Cause the stock piping are painted black...

Cheers

Ok guys, ill post up the results next week with pics after all is done...

Anodising FMIC in Matt Black - $105

Painting Piping with Hightemp Paint + Brass nipple fitting - $50

The only reason I am painting the piping is due to the chrome plating.. cant be anodised

Total = $155

Keep an eye out for the results...

have to say it looks good against the silver duco...nice one.

I cbf doing all of this so installed some mesh infront of the FMIC and painted that black which has a similar effect of dulling down the look.

khungjeng, could post us a pic of your mesh setup?

just wanting to see how it looks.

Thanks

Yea ill be getting my FMIC kit Anodised matt black.. its going to set me back approx $150 however the benifits are:

- Increase surface area = Better cooling

- Matt black = radiate heat better

- Will give a "stealth" look

- Anodising will strengthen the fins and core

Can't wait to get it all done.. ill make sure to post up before/after pics as well as installation pics

From Garrett website:

"It is not uncommon at all for an intercooler and endtanks to be anodized black to keep attention away from the car and help it maintain a sleeper appearance. A very light coat of paint on the core and endtanks is also another option, usually much cheaper and easier than anodizing, with a negligible performance loss. "

Save a bit of cash and just paint it...

Not sure if one should take advice from Garrett when it comes to intercoolers.

They have some very poorly designed end tanks.

But realistically a light cost of paint is going to do no worse than one that doesn't clean/flush their intercooler yearly.

its been covered a few times in the 5 pages of this post...paint it sure...but with the right stuff that wont stop any heat transfer.

Personally i cant see how paint on the endtanks and piping can cause ANY heat soak especially when the air is travelling to thise speeds. However i can see how cooling will be reduced by having paint on the core thats why i have decided to anodise the FMIC...

Cheers

    • HFM BM57 has a "bad" knee point, IIRC. It's not the same thing as the later R chassis MC.
    • The ATTESSA is functionally identical to R34; there were a bunch of JDM models that continued ATTESSA including Fuga/Q70, Skyline/Q50, Cima etc as an option. All with Auto only and I think mostly for snow regions. AFAIK there were no AWD VR30DDTT sold in Australia - it is on my to do list to check regs for racing a LHD car in Targa/ATR/AASA/CAMS events because if I can get the auto to work it would be interesting to run a 4wd car The Ecuteck TCM tuning is the same model as their ECU tuning, they already have it for R35 and Dose's favourite, BMW. You buy "points" to allow your computer to be tuned, buy either a bluetooth (phone app) or bluetooth+USB+Key (phone and PC) dongle, and pay for a tune that will be locked to your tuner ( ). You can also access the tuning software yourself but 1. it is mega expensive and 2. these computers have a billion parameters that intersect, so how could you ever spend enough time on it to get a decent result.
    • Or, is it a case of what it is like owning an R series Skyline? NFI what the previous owner has done or fiddled with... Ha ha ha After reading through this thread, I went on a bit of a research about the Q50/Q60. Now I'm quite intrigued by them! Is the AWD in them more like a WRX where it's always AWD, or is it more like the ATTESSA in the GTRs? By the sound of this TCU tuning, this sounds like a case of someone has made some real software for it, and you just need the right piece of hardware, and then you license that specific vehicle/TCU. Or is this a case of the software will be really expensive so only a few tuners have it, and you still have to pay a license per vehicle?
    • By popular demand.. it was a coil. Got my hands on 1 new OEM coil, replaced with the one that made the less noise difference when I unplugged it while the car was running and started the car up. No stutter and the engine light was gone. I guess I’ll buy the other 5 they have lol
    • No, code 21 is very straightforward. It can only be the things described in that diagnostic flow. In fact it has no way of knowing that the spark plug resistance is out of spec.
