Quite sure its a syncro problem, cant change from 2nd to first over 20km/h less i do some very specky double the clutcing and then only some times it doesn't grind. Guess i should confirm that, was wondering if any one else has had this problem and what it costs. This is for a mate of mine, the car is an r32 gtst.

Cheers

i was under the impression that 1st is only really used from a standstill?

ive got a 32 as well n it doesnt go into 1st unless im basically stopped, and wen it does on the odd occasion coz ive misjudged my speed, it takes a hell of a lot of effort to get it in there, n then it throws me forward out of my seat wen u let the clutch out coz the gear is too slow....

most cars dont shift to 1st unless they're basically stopped.

including, in my experience, r33, lancer, rav 4, ss ute, fpv. the clapped out barina did. lol. but thats another story.

considering i can take off in 2nd with no probs in my 33, why would you wanna shift down to 1st at 20kph anyway?

edit: speeling speling, spelling ><

lol, i dont think 1st has a synchro!

it sure as f**k won't if you keep trying to put it in 1st when you're moving faster than a crawling pace.

tell your mate to learn to drive. or if he's intent on abusing cars, get a hyundai.

OK, some interesting responses there, all of which i dont think are completely accurate. I have driven this particular car alot and never had a problem shifting into 1st ready to take that hair pin, now it dont go.....unless i basically grind it into oblivion. Not sure what cars you guys drive, but all cars i have ever driven, including my own, go into first from 2nd at speed at which 1st is capable of easily. Any way this particular car used to, now it don't. My guess a gear box re-build or new one, Cost??

its just a worn synchro, the vast majority of skylines are crunchy into at least a couple of gears, simple solution to the first question, just learn to double clutch perfectly into 1st from 2nd and u dont need synchro or a new gearbox, mine is the same.

I'm wondering if I should try this on the way home...!

I can't recall any manual car i've ever driven of happily shifting into 1st unless the needle doesn't register on the speedo!

So you can do it in your R32 GTR, and you could do it in your mates R32 GTST until it stopped working? I'm no "Dr Gearbox", but I think for money's sake you should probably stop doing it in your GTR incase it also magically stops doing it for ya. ;o)

sikSII, are you able to shift into 1st from 20kmph and above?

I have driven siksII's car many times and you can get any car into first if you really want to but as he said you have to double clutch.

If you don't double clutch the synchro is required. Do some research on what a synchro is and how it works and you will realise that everytime you go down gears if you don't single shuffle and match the revs the synchro is being worn.

This is really basic twitchy- it won't go into first when it used to at speed because you have worn the synchro really badly. You were just lucky to have a really good gearbox in the first place that would let you put it into first without double clutching.

Match the revs and double clutch and the synchro's don't get used.

Thanks Twitchy for starting the thread for me and the responses so far..

For those of you abusing me for needing 1st gear.. you guys obviously must live somewhere flat like Melbourne!! I drive in a hilly suburb where I turn off to my street on a 110-degree bend up a hill.. I'm at crawling pace when I go 2nd -> 1st as I make the turn.. definitely not abusing the gear box!

However all of a sudden yesterday it simply won't go in to 1st unless I'm almost complete stopped.. It's new to me but it seems other people have the same issue... Can anyone mechanical shed some light on this? Thanks! :)

You have a worn 1st gear synchro, my SSS pulsar does the same but only when its cold, you just need to bring the engine speed up to the same speed as the gearbox and she will slide in or you can spend big bucks fixing it.

A mate of mine had the same problem with his S15, he bought some nulon additive which claimed to fix this problem but i havent seen him since we put it in so i can't say if it works

go into the corner faster in 2nd

yep. now, i haven't seen said corner but you *may* need to drift it in order to keep the revs up and stop the engine from stalling, if you leave it in 2nd :P

if you need first, double clutch the downshift. clutch in, gearbox into neutral, clutch out, rev the engine, clutch in, gearbox into 1st, clutch out. takes some practice but you MUST have your foot off the clutch in neutral or you're just rev matching, not double clutching. rev matching won't save your synchros.

the reason why it's not going into 1st any more is because the synchro WAS healthy, now it is worn and it can't match the revs any longer -> crunch.

As Twitchy likes to say.. "it doesn't shit in its own nest" ... not on my street at least..

Thanks for the comments guys.. I'll see how it goes when I take it for a spin on the weekend..!

change the fluid to some redline stuff as ive heard it works well

gearbox's should be able to change from 2nd to 1st even moving, saying otherwise is rediculous. my rb and sr boxes both do. its a worn syncro so try the fluid trick then otherwise you may have to rebuild it

    • Forgot to include this but this is the mid section of my steering rack that looks like it has a thread/can be turned with that notch mentioned in the post:
    • Hey everyone, Wanted to pick some brains about this issue I'm having with rebuilding my 33 rack (PN is 49001-19U05). All of the tutorials/videos I've seen online are either R34 or S Chassis racks which seem to be pretty straightforward to disassemble but this process doesnt carry over to my rack. Few of the key differences that I've noted The pinion shaft on the other racks bolt on with 3 torx bolts: Whereas my rack bolts on with 2 allen head bolts: These changes are pretty inconsequential but the main difference is how you pull the actual rack out of the housing. The other skyline/s chassis racks can be taken out by tapping the rack out of the body with a socket and it just slides right out. I'm unable to do that with my rack because there's a hard stop at the end that doesn't let the seal/shaft be tapped out. Can also see a difference in the other end of the rack where mine has a notch that looks like you're able to use a big wrench to unthread 2 halves of the rack whereas the other racks are just kinda set in with a punch. My rack: Other racks: TLDR; Wanted to know if anyone has rebuilt this specific model of steering rack for the R33 and if there were any steps to getting it done easier or if I should just give this to a professional to get done. Sorry if this post is a bit messy, first one I've done.
    • I would just put EBC back on the "I would not use their stuff" pile and move on.
    • Can I suggest you try EBC directly again and link them to as many competitor catalogues as you can to show their listing is incorrect, eg https://dba.com.au/product/front-4000-series-hd-brake-rotor-dba42304/ If you have access to an R33 GTST VIN and your VIN, you could also use a Nissan Parts lookup like Amayama to show them the part number is different between 33 GTST and 34 GTT which may get their attention
    • So i got reply from EBC and they just this site where you can clearly see those 296mm fronts on R34 GTT. I send them photos and "quotes" that 296mm are not for 34 GTT and they are too small. But it will be very hard to return them cuz nobody here knows 100% and they just copy those EBC catalogue :-D https://ebcbrakesdirect.com/automotive/nissan/skyline-r34
