i know this is silly, but i took the vacume off the bov, so it wouldn't open, and i got teh flutter sound, but the car was soooo lagy and didn't want to boost past 5psi, the dam thing sucked. Is that what normally happens when you block on teh BOV.

mind you i have connected it back up, it was just being silly.???

My understanding on how a BOV works, is that the pressure helps holds the BOV shut. Hense, when there is no pressure working on the BOV at all, it is like you are introducing a big leak.

.............. is there any hope for these people.

can just see this scenerio

import car sales man: " i just need you to listen to this recording before you qualify to own a skyline".

tape recording can be heard........ vuuuuuuuuu tu tu tu tu tu

customer: "wow bru's da iz da shickest sound dis side of chapz ay....."

car sales man: "get out of my shop........"

ohh i see so if i just take of the hose to it, then the car will leak boost as the BOV has no way of being held shut, makes sence, learn something new everytime.

My question is, there are so many cars running arround with an BOV but still have flutter, can this be from an external gate, or the BOV being set to tight?

I have read many posts about the flutter, and was wondering, on the weekend was washing Jumbarie 16 and many of their drag cars had flutter, i presume that flutter was bad, but many people have that flutter sound.

Thats right, you need to pipe connected no matter what or you'll have a mad leak.

The way people block the stock BOV is putting a metal gasket between the return pipe and the BOV, that way the air gets trapped and has nowhere to go but back through the turbo (not good according to lots) and out the air filter.

can be certain that it wasnt the wastegate making that sound....

as for the cars at jambo making that noise..... big compressor + heavy spring on bov = some reversion

as for your normal run of the mill cars that still have a lil bit of reversion, as you said, bov is possible too tight

If you unplug the vacuum hose (and not plug up the hose) it wont really work because the standard bov's leak, they have a small hole in em underneath therefore introducing a vac leak so you'd really need to block it either with a plate in between the bov and the pipe its screwed onto or put something in between the hose connected to the bov and the return pipe going to the intake pipe. That works well with no leaks but if you don't have it tuned to compensate for the added fuel it throws in the car will start backfiring on ya cos of the AFM. Thats the only thing i don't like about AFM cars... its the shit you get when messing with vented/ blocked bov's.

I reckon 5 mates packed in the back yelling and screaming and throwing half full cans of beer randomly at cars, bikes , pedestrians and small dogs is a far better way of drawing attention to yourself.

Although if you already have that option get a few off duty barmy army members (they don't have much work on right now) to sing a loud and catchy song about how your mates car goes 'dose' from the back seat of the car, even from inside the boot?

gees, I have absolutely no clue what wastegate flutter is supposed to sound like.....all I know is that people with external wastegate goes like.........vrrrooooooooommmmmm WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

so could someone clue me in as in what the flutter is supposed to sound like?.....all the flutters I've heard is from fully sik bro's and their blocked off bov

mythbusters ahoy >_<

#1 there is no such thing as wastegate flutter

#2 flutter or chop chop (vl style tutututututu) is air pressure collisions in the pipework, as a result of compressor surge, as a result of running no bov

#3 a wastegate making a "vrrrooooooooommmmmm WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH" noise is a sreamer pipe setup, nothing to do with compressor surge, bovs, flutter etc.

#4 compressor surge occurs when pressure past the compressor wheel exceeds what the map dictates, so if you goes beyond that, the wheel surges violently

#5 when you block the bov, on gearchange the pressure collision causes the compressor wheel to surge, as we know #4 happens when pressure past the wheel goes beyond what the wheel can supply, so by blocking the bov, you induce compressor surge

Yep gotta agree there, to scare ppl....hmm 38mm external gate with a 10" pipe comming off it.....

vrrrooooooooommmmmm WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ppl running holding there ears....nothing like it

to be honest I find it pretty gay........not as gay as vl with their tutus........not my cup of tea

LOLL Its true its just for attention.... no better way to get noticed than dirving around with a tutututut noise comin from your car...

    • Thanks for that, I'll check it all out. I can always do the brakes last anyway if its a problem.  The 16's are super cool, if they do fit I'll cruise around with them for a bit.
    • Well, that's kinda the point. The calipers might interfere with the inside of the barrels 16" rims are only about 14" inside the barrels, which is ~350mm, and 334mm rotors only leave about 8mm outboard for the caliper before you get to 350, And.... that;s not gunna be enough. If the rims have a larger ID than that, you might sneak it in. I'd be putting a measuring stick inside the wheel and eyeballing the extra required for the caliper outboard of the rotor before committing to bolting it all on.
    • OK, so again it has been a bit of a break but it was around researching what had been done since I didn't have access to Neil's records and not everything is obvious without pulling stuff apart. Happily the guy who assembled the engine had kept reasonable records, so we now know the final spec is: Bottom end: Standard block and crank Ross 86.5mm forgies, 9:1 compression Spool forged rods Standard main bolts Oil pump Spool billet gears in standard housing Aeroflow extended and baffled sump Head Freshly rebuilt standard head with new 80lb valve springs Mild porting/port match Head oil feed restrictor VCT disabled Tighe 805C reground cams (255 duration, 8.93 lift)  Adjustable cam gears on inlet/exhaust Standard head bolts, gasket not confirmed but assumed MLS External 555cc Nismo injectors Z32 AFM Bosch 023 Intank fuel pump Garret 2871 (factory housings and manifold) Hypertune FFP plenum with standard throttle   Time to book in a trip to Unigroup
    • I forgot about my shiny new plates!
    • Well, apparently they do fit, however this wont be a problem if not because the car will be stationary while i do the suspension work. I was just going to use the 16's to roll the old girl around if I needed to. I just need to get the E90 back on the road first. Yes! I'm a believer! 🙌 So, I contacted them because the site kinda sucks and I was really confused about what I'd need. They put together a package for me and because I was spraying all the seat surfaces and not doing spot fixes I decided not to send them a headrest to colour match, I just used their colour on file (and it was spot on).  I got some heavy duty cleaner, 1L of colour, a small bottle of dye hardener and a small bottle of the dye top coat. I also got a spray gun as I needed a larger nozzle than the gun I had and it was only $40 extra. From memory the total was ~$450 ish. Its not cheap but the result is awesome. They did add repair bits and pieces to the quote originally and the cost came down significantly when I said I didn't need any repair products. I did it over a weekend. The only issues I had were my own; I forgot to mix the hardener into the dye two coats but I had enough dye for 2 more coats with the hardener. I also just used up all the dye because why not and i rushed the last coat which gave me some runs. Thankfully the runs are under the headrests. The gun pattern wasn't great, very round and would have been better if it was a line. It made it a little tricky to get consistent coverage and I think having done the extra coats probably helped conceal any coverage issues. I contacted them again a few months later so I could get our X5 done (who the f**k thought white leather was a good idea for a family car?!) and they said they had some training to do in Sydney and I could get a reduced rate on the leather fix in the X5 if I let them demo their product on our car. So I agreed. When I took Bec in the E39 to pick it up, I showed them the job I'd done in my car and they were all (students included) really impressed. Note that they said the runs I created could be fixed easily at the time with a brush or an air compressor gun. So, now with the two cars done I can absolutely recommend Colourlock.  I'll take pics of both interiors and create a new thread.
