I went for a spin in a friends VLT and vice versa today.

I actually quite liked the power delivery, gearing and turbo matching of a VLT running a 2.5" exhaust, FMIC & 13psi.

Turbo spool differences.. High gear 1500rpm full throttle mine will make 12psi pretty quick. The VLT didn't. It required around 2000rpm on board to get boost being made. On the road I noticed the VLT started pulling hard from around 3500rpm and actually went pretty well.

Taking the VLT man for a spin first thing he said was. "It doesn't have time to 'Use' the torque" I feel he hit the nail on the head.

The stock turbo made peak torque at 2000rpm. Giving the car a little stick its always up over 3500rpm, simply because of road speed.

Power drops off after 4950rpm and really there is no point reving past as the short gears have you selecting the gear at peak power then accelerating with power dropping rather than gaining like it should.

In other words, a stock rb20, 25 or even RB30et turbo is really a bad match for the RB30DET with the Skylines gearing.

Open up the hot side as to improve top end (over 5000rpm) VE and have the 3ltr reving to 6000-7000rpm and the gearing will be a good thing. Possibly a new gen VG30DET turbo?

As I am a full time student I make the money to 'waste' on the car during holidays. I may pick up a cheapy Vg30DET turbo, throw it on and see how it goes until I get the big mofo turbo on.

It was nice to be in a car that you can actually wind out the gears a little. Something I haven't felt for a long time.

The RB30DET with the stock turbo's on it really does feel like Diesel Powahhhh. lol

Very much like my parents 2003 Nissan Patrol 3.0TDI.

They have since traded it in for a Landcruiser V8 auto, which suprisingly goes damn hard. Very punchy off the line.

i still can't beleive you even bothered to get the 30DET tuned at all with an RB20 turbo, but i guess you just wanted it running ASAP which is understandable. as a comparison, a friend of mine had an RB30DET and he was using a TO4E with a big front wheel (can't remember exact specs) but get this: the rear used a 1.33 a/r. the turbo was off a big HP rotor, but the 30DET spooled it to 20psi by 4000rpm. boy did that thing have some stink in it.

in short, you can run quite a large turbo off these buggers and still get decent spool time. of course, being 3 litres, high compression and twin cam, you probably won't even notice that it's off-boost most of the time.....

in a few weeks i'll throw up some pics of my engine in this thread, you guys might be interested to see just how far i am going to reduce lag :P

3.7:1 are great with these motors.

Stacks of torque, any diff gearing lower then that (higher numerically) is really a waste, unless you can spin it to 8k.

3.7:1 allow 100km/h at around 6k or so in second gear on my brothers R31 with the 25/30DET.

Although i think the 3.45:1 in my 30ET VL are preety good as well, the 3.7:1 give a slight advantage down low, without sacrificing the top speed available from each gear.

Gearbox ratio's may be a little different in the R32/R33 so you would have to take that into consideration as well.

CUBES - Have you considered getting a second hand cheap turbo from a Rotary of some sort?

I'm pretty sure they have rather large exhaust wheels even on the stock cars.

I'm sure it won't be a direct bolt on but they are fairly cheap and might work out a better option than the VG30 way..

just a thought.. not sure if it's a good one though... hehehe

The VG30DET turbo is capable of 200rwkw.

Are the rotary turbo compressors capable of flowing this much air?

I had a mate with a 13B T in a little RX3 many years ago. 200rwkw was made with a highflowed turbo.

The exhaust side may be capable but is the compressor side?

Joel I think you'll find the VLT had the wide ratio ( ute pack !) gearbox option meaning shorter gearing 1-2-3 . Actually , got a copy of the Holden 3.0ET (Vol 6) manual that states MX7 ratios are 3.580 , 2.077 , 1.360 , 1.000 , 0.760 .

When used with the 38/11 (3.454) final drive the overall ratios are 12.367 , 7.175 , 4.698 , 3.454 , 2.625 . From memory the R32 GTST Manual uses a 4.36 final drive and the gearbox a 3.321 1st gear ratio making for 14.479 overall , 2nd 8.288 , 3rd 5.703 , 4th 4.36 , 5th 3.309 .

My master plan was to have the VLT's 1st gear ratio (overall) but with the closer ratio gearbox . So divide 12.367 by 3.321 which gives 3.724 as my ideal final drive ratio . I've yet to dabble in the later type short nose R200 differentials and have not heard of any with taller ratios than 4.0xx . The later Nissans were using larger diameter rims ie 16+ whereas the earlier types ie R30/31 , S12 , 280Z , Z31 were on 14's and 15's . I'm sure a look at tyre rolling diametres and available differentials should get me in the ball park for an R32 . I'll probably need to look into up a ratio (4.1 ?) and up a tyre profile to 60 series . The only GTST I see on a regular basis wears either 225/55's or 205/55's on the std 6.5x16 rims , can you tell me what is standard .

GTR standard diff ratio is 4.11

GTS4 came with a 4.3.

I think you will find the rolling diameters on all these cars to very similar as the older cars have a taler sidewall on the tyre to compensate for a smaller rim. Tyres only come in a few select overall rolling diameter usually 570mm, 600mm, and 620mm... these are the common passenger car rolling diameter for example a 215/65/14 is the same rolling diameter as a 265/35/18. SO i dont think tyre size plays any key roll in the discussion of final drive ratios especially if people are just using a common tyre.

On another note a friend just finished a VL turbo I had some things to do with. The build was forged internal with a standard 25det head, custom plenum with 90mm throttle body, gt35/40 turbo with a .92 rear a/r all powered by a mcrotech. The car spools to 15psi ie run it by 3600RPM and made 476rwhp on only 14.5psi. With a 3.45 diff ratio and standard VL gear box the car is an animal all the way up to and including 3rd gear. I was very impressed with the power output considering the low boost and also the fact the head is untouched. I will try to find a dyno print out in the next week.

What kind of revs in 5th are we looking at on highways, 110, 120,130, and 140 ks etc.. ? (rb25det box, r32 16" rims n tyres)

exactly the same boost level as what i'm going to be running, but i'll be using a larger turbo. amazing power out of the 35/40 at just 15psi, i didn't know they could push such numbers at so little boost!

The point I'm trying to make is I probably can't get a 3.7 to 1 ratio short nose differential to suit an R32 GTST so a 4.1 with a larger diametre tyre may go close .  

About that  .92ARR housing , is that a propper GT35 housing ?

    • Update 3: Hi all It's been a while. Quite a lot of things happened in the meantime, among other things the car is (almost) back together and ready to be started again. Things that I fixed or changed: Full turbo removal, fitting back the OEM turbo oil hardlines. Had to do quite a bit of research and parts shopping to get every last piece that I need and make it work with the GT2860 turbos, but it does work and is not hard to do. Proves that the previous owner(s) just did not want to. While I was there I set the preload for the wastegates to 0,9bar to hopefully make it easier for the tuner to hit the 370hp I need for the legal inspections that will follow later on. Boost can always go up if necessary. Fitted a AN10 line from the catch can to the intake hose to make the catchcan and hopefully the cam covers a slight vacuum to have less restrictive oil returns from the head and not have mud build up as harshly in the lines and catch can. Removed the entire front interior just shy of the dashboard itself to clean up some of the absolutely horrendous wiring, (hopefully) fix the bumpy tacho and put in LED bulbs while I was there. Also put in bulbs where there was none before, like the airbag one. I also used that chance to remove the LED rpm gauge on the steering column, which was also wired in absolute horror show fashion. Moved the 4in1 Prosport gauge from sitting in front of the OEM oil pressure gauge to the center console vents, I used a 3D printed vent piece to hold that gauge there. The HKB steering wheel boss was likely on incorrectly as I sometimes noticed the indicator reset being uneven for left vs. right. In the meantime also installed an airbag delete resistor, as one should. Installed Cube Speed premium short shifter. Feels pretty nice, hope it'll work great too when I actually get to drive. Also put on a fancy Dragon Ball shift knob, cause why not. My buddy was kind enough to weld the rust hole in the back, it was basically rusted through in the lowermost corner of the passenger side trunk area where the wheel arch, trunk panel and rear quarter all meet. Obviously there is still a lot of crustiness in various areas but as long as it's not rusted out I'll just treat and isolate the corrosion and pretend it's not there. Also had to put down a new ground wire for the rear subframe as the original one was BARELY there. Probably a bit controversial depending on who you ask about this... but I ended up just covering the crack in the side of the engine block, the one above the oil feed, with JB Weld. I used a generous amount and roughed up the whole area with a Dremel before, so I hope this will hold the coolant where it should be for the foreseeable future. Did a cam cover gasket job as the half moons were a bit leaky, and there too one could see the people who worked on this car before me were absolute tools. The same half moons were probably used like 3 times without even cleaning the old RTV off. Dremeled out the inside of the flange where the turbine housing mates onto the exhaust manifolds so the diameter matches, as the OEM exhaust manifolds are even narrower than the turbine housings as we all know. Even if this doesn't do much, I had them out anyways, so can't harm. Ideally one would port-match both the turbo and the manifold to the gasket size but I really didn't feel up to disassembling the turbine housings. Wrapped turbo outlet dumps in heat wrap band. Will do the frontpipe again as well as now the oil leak which promted me to tear apart half the engine in the first place is hopefully fixed. Fitted an ATI super damper to get rid of the worn old harmonic balancer. Surely one of the easiest and most worth to do mods. But torquing that ARP bolt to spec was a bitch without being able to lock the flywheel. Did some minor adjustments in the ECU tables to change some things I didn't like, like the launch control that was ALWAYS active. Treated rusty spots and surface corrosion on places I could get to and on many spots under the car, not pretty or ideal but good enough for now. Removed the N1 rear spats and the carbon surrounding for the tailpipe to put them back on with new adhesive as the old one was lifting in many spots, not pretty. Took out the passenger rear lamp housing... what do you know. Amateur work screwed me again here as they were glued in hard and removing it took a lot of force, so I broke one of the housing bolts off. And when removing the adhesive from the chassis the paint came right off too. Thankfully all the damaged area won't be visible later, but whoever did the very limited bodywork on this car needs to have their limbs chopped off piece by piece.   Quite a list if I do say so myself, but a lot of time was spent just discovering new shit that is wrong with the car and finding a solution or parts to fix it. My last problem that I now have the headache of dealing with is that the exhaust studs on the turbo outlets are M10x1.25 threaded, but the previous owner already put on regular M10 nuts so the threads are... weird. I only found this out the hard way. So now I will just try if I can in any way fit the front pipe regardless, if not I'll have to redo the studs with the turbos installed. Lesson learned for the future: Redo ALL studs you put your hands on, especially if they are old and the previous owners were inept maniacs. Thanks for reading if you did, will update when the engine runs again. Hope nothing breaks or leaks and I can do a test drive.

    • Yea - I mean I've seen my fuel pump which is decades old and uh, while I'm not saying this with real knowledge... but I sure get the ick at using anything in the fuel system that produced the state of that pump. Many years ago I went through multiple pumps (and strainers) before I dropped the tank to clean it out with extreme violence. I'm talking the car would do maybe 50km before coming to a halt, which resulted in me cleaning out the filter with some brake cleaner and going on my way. None of my stuff ever looked like what came out of your fuel tank. I don't think I'd be happy with it unless every single component was replaced (or at least checked/cleaned/confirmed to be clean here).
    • I'm not going to recommend an EBC pad. I don't like them. Just about anything else would suit me better. I've been using Intima pads for a while now.
