Not sure what Nissan's stance is regarding Skylines and ethanol, but ethanol likes to eat certain rubbers. Those with completely upgraded fuel systems should be fine.

The only real issue with ethanol blended fuel is that it has a different density & therefore your AFR's change - making them leaner. I think the number is about 3 to 4 % from memory. So you have to be careful.

just bought a full tank of Peak98, and i have to say there is actually a performance gain(seat of pants feeling, no dyno or anything yet). Now my skyline is stock (cat back, air filter = stock) but my worry now is , is it performing better because my car is actually running slightly leaner??

When I was in SA, I used Mobil 98 a few times (noting peak say its a mobil product), and the car seemed to go better than BP most of the time

having said that, sometimes knock went up - well only once, cos after that, I stopped using the stuff.

I asked my brother (who is a petrochemical engineer, and process supervisor in an oil refinery, BP) - he told me that only BP crack their 98 at close to 98 ron - as they are the only ones that use the technology to do so (low sulphur, blah, blah, blah).

He also told me that others providing 98 ron must do so by means of an additive (some pure hydrocarbon, such as tolulene for example) which works well, but the downside is that it can 'go off' as the additives will evaporate over time, causing the RON to drop.

BP fuel on the other hand doesnt have the tendancy to degrade as rapidly over time, due to its manufacturing process.

He also suggested that the reason my car seemed to go better most times is in all likely hood they would bump the RON above 98 to compensate for its tendency to reduce slowly/slightly over time.

So bottom line, its good, just be wary of getting a 'bad batch' of fuel. May never happen, but if it does it could hurt.

I have always stuck with BP since (maybe due to my paranoia) and havent had issues of bad batch of fuel since.

For me its also about turn over of supply

I've used almost a tankful and knock levels on the pfc seem the same as on bp ultimate. I cant feel any power loss or gain.

Of peak98?

The fuel does smell weird though as I was filling up with it.

does it get you high faster :(

I don't think they'd ship the fuel from Singapore, if they do that then the price will be more expensive than BPs ultimate. I am also pretty sure that BP has the only refinery here, so peak or not all comes from BP and of course BP will not allow competitors to obtain fuel better than what they are selling.

BP for me!!

the independents get their fuel from OS (I believe most of it comes from Indonesia?)

Its a weird setup, where BP buys crude from OS - cos its poorer grade than the local crude, and therefore alot cheaper - but BP has a refinery that can use poorer grade crude

local oil companies sell their curde OS, cos its better quality, and more easily refined in countries with 'lesser' technology, and they sell it for a premium because its of higher grade (australia has one of the best crudes in the world)

then independent fuel companies buy it in

All major fuel companies buy their fuel from BP, but BP dont sell 98 to anyone else.

And for those thinking they are getting better fuel from BP, think again.

Fuel that is sold to other brand service stations is inspected and must be of high tolerance - the other companies put in their own 'secret' additives, then sell it to the public

Any fuel that is cracked with tolerances that are still 'within spec' but may be close to other companies tolerances is distributed to BP services stations.

Except 98 of course.

****Caveat: This was all accurate as of a couple of years ago, as explained to me by a BP employee****

Can we perhaps pull our resources together and create a list as to where these new "NON" BP locations are.

Could be a great for us to use.

Mods, perhaps if you could even sticky it for a few months until everyone gets to know where they all are. I know there out there but i havent come accross a 98RON seller yet that is non BP.

make the list as mention as we discover them, address or just suburb, company, fuel quality.

Just a thought that could be beneficial for a lot of other skyline members, including myself ;-)

    • Hi,  Just joined the forum so I could share my "fix" of this problem. Might be of use to someone. Had the same hunting at idle issue on my V36 with VQ35HR engine after swapping the engine because the original one got overheated.  While changing the engine I made the mistake of cleaning the throttle bodies and tried all the tricks i could find to do a throttle relearn with no luck. Gave in and took it to a shop and they couldn't sort it. Then took it to my local Nissan dealership and they couldn't get it to idle properly. They said I'd need to replace the throttle bodies and the ecu probably costing more than the car is worth. So I had the idea of replacing the carbon I cleaned out with a thin layer of super glue and it's back to normal idle now. Bit rough but saved the car from the wreckers 🤣
    • After my last update, I went ahead with cleaning and restoring the entire fuel system. This included removing the tank and cleaning it with the Beyond Balistics solution, power washing it multiple times, drying it thoroughly, rinsing with IPA, drying again with heat gun and compressed air. Also, cleaning out the lines, fuel rail, and replacing the fuel pump with an OEM-style one. During the cleaning process, I replaced several hoses - including the breather hose on the fuel tank, which turned out to be the cause of the earlier fuel leak. This is what the old fuel filter looked like: Fuel tank before cleaning: Dirty Fuel Tank.mp4   Fuel tank after cleaning (some staining remains): Clean Fuel Tank.mp4 Both the OEM 270cc and new DeatschWerks 550cc injectors were cleaned professionally by a shop. Before reassembling everything, I tested the fuel flow by running the pump output into a container at the fuel filter location - flow looked good. I then fitted the new fuel filter and reassembled the rest of the system. Fuel Flow Test.mp4 Test 1 - 550cc injectors Ran the new fuel pump with its supplied diagonal strainer (different from OEM’s flat strainer) and my 550cc injectors using the same resized-injector map I had successfully used before. At first, it idled roughly and stalled when I applied throttle. Checked the spark plugs and found that they were fouled with carbon (likely from the earlier overly rich running when the injectors were clogged). After cleaning the plugs, the car started fine. However, it would only idle for 30–60 seconds before stalling, and while driving it would feel like a “fuel cut” after a few seconds - though it wouldn’t fully stall. Test 2 – Strainer swap Suspecting the diagonal strainer might not be reaching the tank bottom, I swapped it for the original flat strainer and filled the tank with ~45L of fuel. The issue persisted exactly the same. Test 3 – OEM injectors To eliminate tuning variables, I reinstalled the OEM 270cc injectors and reverted to the original map. Cleaned the spark plugs again just in-case. The stalling and “fuel cut” still remained.   At this stage, I suspect an intermittent power or connection fault at the fuel pump hanger, caused during the cleaning process. This has led me to look into getting Frenchy’s fuel hanger and replacing the unit entirely. TL;DR: Cleaned and restored the fuel system (tank, lines, rail, pump). Tested 550cc injectors with the same resized-injector map as before, but the car stalls at idle and experiences what feels like “fuel cut” after a few seconds of driving. Swapped back to OEM injectors with original map to rule out tuning, but the issue persists. Now suspecting an intermittent power or connection fault at the fuel pump hanger, possibly cause by the cleaning process.
    • For race cars, this is one part where I find having the roll cage bar having gone through a hole in the floor better than the build it up on a ledge inside... The Merc I help on, the main hoop ends are marked on the car, and the jack is marked... Jack goes under a few inches and lifts one whole side of the car up... Removes that fight for long slim jacks for race car duties!   My biggest issue for the daily drivers I work on, is my jacks don't go high enough. The jacks start out on a few blocks, jack it up, then start a second jack under it on more blocks, and then I can get an axle stand under it. My axle stands are presently in use, and are nearly fully extended. The car is sitting with barely more than a cm of clearance to get the wheel off the studs! Sarah's Kluger is the same, as it has an ungodly amount of droop available in the suspension and a distinct lack of good jacking points!
    • Happy? Yep, my to do list is getting shorter and shorter. Either this light approaching is the end of the tunnel, or I'm about to be hit by a train... Ha ha ha   Also, Duncan isn't that far out of town that you need to make a multi day drive out of it. 😛
