Hey guys & girls

I have just about had enough of my office job after 3 years of the same boring thing. I have always had an a keen interest in cars both old school V8's and the more modern turner cars...go the sklines... :laugh:

I have limited general knowledge so i would like to find a job that allows me to learn as i work, was thinking some kind of apprenticeship or tafe course if there is something someone could suggest that would be great

So if any one can has any ideas im all ears

hmm.

screw the pre-vocational. i didnt do it. straight to toyota, 18months ther. quit straight into my diploma of accounting.. have i made the wrong choice?

how old are u? under 25 can still land an apprenticeship easially.

in the QLD section a workshop was looking for a sales rep. start ther. ull learn more from word of mouth and doin stuff urself than in a class. thats how i see it. GL.

Hey mate, im 21 so hoping an apprenticeship should be easy to get.

What kind of trade should i be looking at? general mechanical (is the something more specific to highend cars?), welding/facricating, spray painting, not sure what to go with, what would be a good starting base to work from?

i you want a trade to learn everything...knowledge about all general mechanics, fabrication. Do a Fitter and turner apprentiship. I just finished mine. Best thing i did. Car's are basic in comparison. The things you learn are related to all mechanical things. learning Tuning and high performance stuff is a matter of spending the time with the right person.

also, you have the ability to fabricate your own things the way you want them. very handy knowledge.

Im doing an apprenticeship, never get bored with it or anything. 9 months in i think and i have 2 regrets. Not dropping out earlier and not studying a tafe course so i could chop a year off my apprenticeship. i spose if your under the age of 35 most places will still hire you. I love my apprenticeship and cant wait to be a tradesman :no:

Edit:Ryanrb25 is right, if i wasnt so far into my trade and didnt like it i would do fitting and turning. You can do so much with it.

Quite a few people have suggested a fitter and turner apprenticeship, i think it something im goin to make some enquires about

Has anyone had any dealings with All Trades Qld?

Would people recommend or warn away from them?

yea i agree with doing a course in mech. engineering... or be a mechanic at the right shop....

some fitting and turning would be operation of machinery for work, machining parts, and writing the programs for the machining.... not directly related to what you want to do, but you would gain great fabrication knowledge etc.

tuning is then just a course at microtech or similar/plus being LUCKY enough to be employed at the right place.

fitter and turner apprenticeship (or toolmaker) FTW.

The skills I have learned will be useful rebuilding my GTR, so I will be able to save alot of money doing just about everything myslelf.

wait till u turn 22 to get a apprentiship then u are old enough to get matture age apprentiship wage

1st yr mature wage is 70% of tradesman wage

just beaware if u go for a cert 3 in auto (mechanic) the wages are shit (as mechanics are the lowest paid trade)

fitter and turners get paid shit loads more

ive been in the mechanic trade 4 13yrs and it has its good and bad points

general servicing is very boring

performance and fabrication work (which i do) is the best part as u see the fruits of your labour come to life

Thats just plain stupid. Get it over and done with if your like 18 but it would be worth it if your like 21 or something lol :mellow:

what the stupid why become a 1st yr apperntice as a mechanic at 21 and be on the std app rate (around $200pw) or wait till hes 22 (as hes 21 at the moment) and get paid around a extra $150pw

i did a 1 month trial as a tool maker which is kinda higher ranked fitter and turner kinda thing, turned it down cause who knows why... thinkin back now id be on my 3rd year working with flowjets, literaly making any parts i want

who's cut??

me cut...

but im looking into spray-painting soon, your work is something you and everyone that see's it can admire which i think would be satisfying.. sooner you start sooner you finish, and the older you get the more money you need to live and app dont pay too great when you start.. so start straight away

      just an update to this, poor man pays twice  Tried sanding down the pulleys but it didnt do the trick. Chucked another second hand alternator in the na car which I got for free off my mate and its fixed the squelling. Must have been unlucky with the bearings.    As for my turbo car, I managed to pick up a cwc rb alternator conversion bracket + LS alternator for 250 off marketplace, looked to be in really good nick. Installed it , started the car and its not charging the battery.... ( Im not good with auto elec stuff so im not sure if this was all I needed to do but I verified such by using a multimeter on the battery when the engine was running and I was only getting 12.2v )   I had to modify the earth strap for the new LS alternator , factory earth strap was a 10mm bolt which did not fit the bolt on the LS alternator which was double the size so I cut it off , went to repco bought some ring terminals that fit, crimped it onto the old earth strap and bolted it up to the alternator , started the car and same issue. Ran like shit and was reading 12.2 at the battery.  For a "plug and play" advertised kit thats not very plug and play but alas.  My question is , am I missing something ? Ive been reading that some people recommend upgrading the stock 80 amp alternator fuse to a 140 amp but I dont see how that would stop the alternator charging especially at idle not under load.  Regardless ive pulled it out and am going to get it bench tested by an auto elec tomorrow but it would be handy to know if ive missed something silly or have done something wrong.

      My wild guess is that you have popped off an intake pipe....check all of the hoses between the turbo and the throttle for splits or loose clamps.

      To provide more specific help, more information is needed. What Android screen? What is its wiring diagram? Does the car's wiring have power at any required BAT and ACC wires, and is the loom's earth good?

      So, now all you need to do is connect the 2 or 3x 12v feeds into the unit to permanent 12v, ACC 12V and IGN 12V that you can find in the spot behind the stereo, and the earth, and then it will switch on with the car.
