Wondering if anyone knows if this is normal, I've tested the voltage outputs from my CAS and have found something that may be a problem.

The signal from the 1degree output is around 2.4 volts and sits quite steady at idle. But the 120degree signal seems very erratic, jumping between 0.9 to 1.6volts at idle.

Is this normal, or is my CAS U/S?

Well with a bit of research I found the CAS test section in the stagea service manual

It says the 120 degree signal should be between 1.3v to 1.4v at idle, and I imagine it should be a reasonably steady reading aswell.

So it's looking as though mine is playing up.

Please sit down before reading this part.

A new item is worth $1042 from Nissan, what a joke that is.

Oh if anyone is kind enough, maybe they could test the voltage on their CAS so I can compare with mine.

I can supply ECU pin numbers, wire colours etc if needed.

I wanna know 100% for sure.

Let's just hope mine isn't playing up as well. I've been getting quite bad fuel consumption lately, and I've yet to pinpoint the problem due to my g/f's car being out of action. I'll let you know when she won't be using the car and you can go around and pull mine apart

Cheers mate, only have to get to the ecu plug, to take a voltage reading.

DATS interesting Brendan. Now my shoulder is getting better I am going to try and solve my P. poor fuel consumption, so this could be an area to check.

It is quite interesting, I'm finding, I've realised it's much easier to find a problem with the right gear and a full service manual.

Talking about the right gear, i'm lucky enough to be able to borrow the ocilliscope from work, so I'll diagnose this sucker once and for all.

Ok, I've tested the output with the ocilliscope, and it looks fine compared to the service manual. Back to the drawing board.

One thing I noticed yesterday before I started it the voltage from the MAF was 0.9 volts, manual says 0.2 volts.

Didn't test it until after it was started today, and the voltage looked fine. Will have to test again tomorrow before startup.

This is really getting annoying.

Wont need to now, thanks for the offer though mate, much appreciated.

Working afternoon shift aswell, till 11pm, so wouldn't be able to make it.

I'm reasonably satisfied that the CAS is ok now, I'm looking at the MAF sensor now, will hopefully have an answer tomorrow.

I've been searching the forum, and it seems as though the issue i'm having is very common. And no one seems to have a definate answer.

So I'll keep prodding away, and will hopefully find something.

The CAS produces a pulsing signal when the engine is running, the 1 degree is stable because it is more frequent, hence the multimeter reading doesn't vary much. The 120 degree signal is less frequent hence the multimeter reading does vary.

As far as I know you can't check CAS operation with a multimeter at idle. The 120 degree signal should stabilse as the rpm rises. So maybe try it at higher rpm, that's where you should/might get the Nissan manual voltages.

;) Cheers

hmm I had a CAS fail years ago on my r33, it was a real pain to track down, one of the most intermittent missfires I've ever seen.

Ended up paying around 400 for a second hand one - I almost had a heart attack at the nissan price....

Do you have a consult cable? You can get a reading off most of your sensors and make sure they are acting OK while you are driving

  • 1 month later...

guys and gals

didnt want to create a new thread to ask the question .. so found some talk of consult ports in here

can anyone send me / describe the consult port on a 2000 Stagea?

I have a consult cable that I used on my old pulsar and wondering if the pin outs etc are the same?

I have calumsult and nissan datascan etc. IT would be great if the consult cable can be used on the stagea too.

( ps I dont actually HAVE the car yet hence why I cant just try it out. Thanks guys.

my 99 s1 (late model) stagea has a 14pin consult connector

    • My thought is if you were just moving it forward and the upstream geometry remained the same, then no difference at all. But because the current one has the filter direct into the AFM inlet, you effectively have the best chance of a completely symmetric air flow profile upstream, and in, the AFM, whilst the aftermarket inlet thingo has a (small, to be sure) bend between the filter and the AFM. That would bias the flow to the outside of the bend (downstream of the bend) which might well reduce the size of the signal seen by the AFM, for the same total flow rate. Having said that: If you're proposing to make your inlet look like a hybrid of your existing one and the aftermarket one, such that there is no bend where the filter is clamped on... then I say it will be just fine. If there is going to be such a bend, then, if you can align the insertion of the AFM blade such that it is at right angles to the plane of the bend, then there is a better than even chance that the centreline velocity where the blade is will remain more or less the same, and the velocity will just be a little faster to the outside of that, and just a little slower to the inside. **This is not professional investment advice and you should consult a suitably qualified ouija board, tea leaves or the intestines of a goat for more accurate prognostication.
    • Hi Tao, Thanks for your reply.  It's been a while and I managed to get the valve stem seals replaced with the head on the car.  Unfortunately this didn't solve my issue, the car still smokes a lot after idling (to be honest during idle you can see a bit of blue smoke from the exhaust), same after deceleration. I will try disconnecting the valve cover breathers, do I leave the PCV valve in? By engine oil drain pipe, do you mean the turbo oil drain?
    • What about if you just give it direct 12v and earth?
    • Hi guys . Can someone help me  I bought an Android screen for my Nissan fuga but it won't turn on
    • My guesstimate, with no real numbers to back it up, is it won't effect it greatly at all.its not a huge change in position, and I can't see the air flow changing from in turbulence that much based on distance, and what's in front of it. Johnny and Brad may have some more numbers to share from experience though.
