Well, I am not a guru but I can tell you straight up a 2JZGTE can handle 600+hp in factory form. An RB26/30 is a purpose built engine and will handle as much as the parts you can afford to put in it.

One of my mates has a mk.4 2jz supra, came from japan pushing 300rwhp and ran a best ET of 12.7 (with slicks).

Another mate has an RB25/30DETT, made 310rwhp @ 10psi but never saw the strip like that. Now makes 494rwhp @ 21psi.

The RB engine at a similar power output felt a bit harsher than the 2JZ but that was probably just turbo combination and the fact that he was only running a rev limit of 5500rpm at that time as it was leaning out.. full boost by 4000rpm and hit the limiter at 5500rpm! Now, I never drove this car with the RB30, only when it had an RB20.

I did however drive the supra around the time the owner ran a 12.7, it felt a hell of a lot smoother and with the sequential turbos starting to boost ~2000rpm, the power delivery felt very linear.

The supra was pretty much factory and the engine came in that car, the RB on the other hand is in a VH commodore.. so it's kinda hard to tell :)

300rwhp without sequential turbo's but using only a stock rb25det turbo the rb30det's make all their boost ~2000rpm. So not really a good comparison.

At what power level (not US dyno power levels but here in AUS) do the 2jz's start bending rods?

I've on occasions visited the supraforums and laughed quite hard how they seem to think rb25/26's and 30's melt pistons. lmao.. Poor tuning melts/breaks pistons. :)

My general feeling is the 2JZ is a slightly stronger motor than the RB30. RB30DET's have reasonable bottom ends, they manage to hold close to 400rwkw providing the tune is good. I have no idea what the 2jz is capable of on an AUS dyno.

as bubba said, factory form 600+ hp as opposed to purpose built rb30det. i have some massive respect for the 2jz. I would even compare a 1jz to a rb26det, as many people do these days.

You dont need a "purpose built" rb30 to make huge power, just look at what Rob from R.I.P.S here in N.Z has done with rb30's, just to name a few, his r32 gts4, rb30det with 100% standard internals and stock r32 rb25de head made 447rwkw and ran a 10.21 @ 134mph and was proven to be very reliable, another r32 gts4 that he built made 400rwkw+ reliably with completly stock internals and also has run numerous 10sec passes. And im sure there a lots more rb30's with stock internals making more power than both of those cars.

the guys how did my engine conversion had a 2jz in his 180sx, there was a write up on it in HPI.. had 430rwkw stock internals only had injectors and manifold turbo combo.. was a total beat ran a 10.54 i beleave

i really love both engines so id be happy to own either one

but if i had to bite the bullet id prob hit up the 2jz

Heavier VL's with their RB30 SOHC's run 10.5's with bolt ons and a shade over 300rwkw. :S

Whats actually wrong with the head?

Small ports/valves?

The port angles/size appear to look ok to me?

Apparently each port has a slightly different design which makes them a nightmare to work on when porting

yea all i was getting at was the fact that the rb30det is basically a purpose built thing and not an origional thing. where as 2j is a factory motor doin the same thing.

1JZ head designed by Yamaha. 2JZ by Toyota......says it all really.

Thats why 1.5 JZ (1JZ head, 2JZ block) would be the best combo for power making!

that's very interesting, i would imagine yamaha would have designed the head for revvvving!

also i believe all forced induction toyotas came with forgies....including 3sgte 4agze etc etc.

    • Dredgggggeeee time; I have recently finally started driving the car. It sat for so long that the fuel tank gave birth to rust sludge and blocked my lift pump sock and one of my walbro 460's and left grime, rust chunks and muck all through the surge tank and system. I decided to commit and pull the trigger on an oem r32 gtr fuel tank and Frenchys twin 460 / sender / surge tank hanger combo and all new larger lines and fittings etc, also boost doc heater hose kit / new heater core and a heap of other bits and shits like wideband sensor installed in the dump and Syltech iacv + lines and all wired and added to current tune. now having lightly driven it a couple times without issue, I can happily report on the hta3076 in its current tune. still no boost control switched on, 20psi gate springs, car makes 22psi at 3200rpm in 6th gear with 30-50% TPS from cruise at 100kmh. Going by the old graph, this means it should be making 300-325whp at the same numbers above. Very very responsive setup under true road driving loads. all that's left for the build is body loom + PDM, finish the remote aircon setup, install carbon fibre parts and go for full tune and 30psi. the 315 rear tyres are now performing like they're 195's, wheel spin in any gear at almost any rpm, whereas my previous setup hooked up in 3rd no issue, albeit Nt01's back then / RB25 5spd vs (new) old date r888r's Z34 6spd now, + obviously all the support upgrades I listed in the quoted post above. car sits at 1-3psi on cruise at 100kmh, expectations totally exceeded and I'm beyond stoked with all this so far. • I've also been eyeing their rear axles for my car. I purchased seat mounts from them about 7 years ago and they were hot garbage so I've been a little wary about purchasing them. With that being said, please buy them and get back to us haha.
    • Can a moderator please move this into the right category.. I've accidently put this into racing build thread 🤦🏽‍♂️
    • Being a manual, we very quickly ordered new R34 gearbox (From Nissan) and remaining parts from Kudos motorsports. Would highly recommend the team there. Ultra helpful and quick to share advice and upgrades. We are in the middle of taking the Auto out (Genuine 94,000/kms) and putting the Manual in this weekend. Part 2 of the build will include likely a Plazaman Intercooler and Plenium, Hks Exhaust with Tomei Dump (ordered).
