Hi all,

the big service saga continues, but is drawing to a close, got the car booked in for saturday morning :(

anywho, i was told to do an engine flush or oil flush? just to get all the crap/build-up out because the oil hasn't been changed for a while.

Was wondering exactly what this means? What products people have used to do this?

I think my mate said he was going to use some Martini product. I'm skeptical as i can't find any Martini product made to 'clean' anything.

so yeah a little lost on what this whole process is. It sounds worthwhile as this is the first service it's had since it's landed in oz so i don't know what it's life was like before in Japan, and a good clean sounds like a good idea.

any dangers in doing this so called "flush"? apparently have to run the car for 30mins or something...

cheers,

daniel

I've had mixed reactions. some people reckon don't do it, or you'll release crap which can block oil galleries.

I personally used it in my skyline when I first got it. Motor was perfectly clean anyways. had always been run on synth oil after run in (I bought it off a jap guy I knew).

I've used it in my daily drive cars before too. No problems.

It's really up to you.

cool, thanks Chris.

are you referring to the same Martini product you've used to clean the car? Or just a some other engine/oil flush? Because i went to Martini's site, and couldn't find any "cleaning" product

I'm keen to hear why some people wouldn't recommend it, ie what the dangers actually are

Yeah, i'm putting in all full synthetics.

Mobil 1 0w40

Redline MT-90 for the gearbox

Redline Gear Oil 75w90 for the diff

Gone the best, except for the engine oil, you can go better than Mobil 1, but it's a good start. Next time when i don't have to do so much, i'll go up a rung on the engine oil. Get's pricey when doing everything :)

cheers,

daniel

DOnt worry, i spent over 1000 on my 100k service just last month.. So i know it all adds up!! But its worth it for your car..

I used best of the best as well. .from timing belt, to all oils etc etc..

I use ELF fully syth engine oil.. That stuff is top quailty!! (for the last 1.2 years)

For gearbox, and diff oils i used motul gear 3000 stuff..

I got a full engine flush done.. No dramas with my car!!

Been a month now..

how long has it been since you changed the oil? this isn't the car you imported like a year ago is it? and still not had an oil change? personally I would never put any of that crap in my engine. if you really want to make sure it's clean. change the oil, do 50kms, change it again.

cool. Do you remember what product was used to do the flush?

theres an old school way of doing it which is basically the same as what the products are based on now for the engine/oil flush... METHOLATED SPIRITS :)

the old school way is to empty your engine oil out... pour the kerosine in there.. run car for abouit 5mins or so, then flush out again... then pour like low quality oil in there (like a $20 bottle of stuff) run car again for 15mins... empty that... then pour your top knotch oil in there.. dura blend semi synthetic is good for standard internal motors.. its not too thin but everyone has mixed reactions to this just like MANWHORE said

sorry i should say this is the first oil change I'VE done... compliance place said they changed oils.

We checked about 3000km's in from compliance, oil "looked" 100% fine. it's been about 6000km's since then, so yes, i'm bad, it's over due.

Sorry, confusing ppl a bit, first change i've done. Should have mentioned compliance

as you can probably gather, from the time i've head it, i haven't driven it much. It's only been registered for about 10 months, MAJOR dramas with DOTARS, etc...

EDIT: hmm... not sure if i've got the balls to use metho in the car :) and no semi-synth

lol when you get your engine flush... have a wiff (not too much you'll get high :) )

its metho dude! thats what engine flush is with a few other little things in it.. and some other stuff dunno what...

The semi synthetic valvoline durablend... worked better in tests they done than the mobile 1 fully sikthetic... :)

cars yours... choice is yours... :)

R33HVN, correct me if I'm wrong, but I'd be putting kerosene in the engine oil. not straight kero, bout 1 litre with the rest topped up with a cheap oil... DO NOT REV the engine when it's in! run for about 10-20 minutes, then empty and fill up with good oil... did this on my 31 and it sure didn't hurt it.... wouldn't put metho into it though!

kero, diesel, turps, metho... home brew remedies people take your pick! I've also heard you can use diesel oil because it has a higher detergent content.

Personally, I wouldn't want to chance damaging my motor for the sake of $11. I burn more fuel than that on a good night out. On the plus side of commercial products, they are likely to be less aggressive (read: effective) and therefore the potential for causing damage is also lower. Maybe the placebo effect is all that really matters?

That said, at least diesel and kero come from the same place as motor oil. turps and metho are completely different chemicals and I feel sorry for anyone following flippant advice given on this forum.

I have never heard about such 'martini' branded product. Wouldn't trust that shit if it's not well known.

I have personally played golf with the owner of nulon numerous times and chat with him regularly. I beleive their products are top quality.

They have done tests using their nulon oil additive in the car, then driving it WITHOUT any oil at all in the sump interstate. If that isn't proof, then I don't know what is.

nulon make an engine oil flush. that is the one i've used - refer to my experience in post #2.

just got back from the service. Had a very good look in the engine (as much as you can after you take the oil cap off) no sludge, gunk. Used one of those bright portable light things, all good. Looked quite clean, mechanic actually said an engine flush wouldn't make it cleaner. And we were going to use a Nulon product, the 'Martini' is branded something else, but apparently made by martini. who knows.

So yeah, i was going to do what Beer Baron said, drop the oil after maybe 2,500km's... but the engine looked quite clean. Compliance had changed all the filters, oil/fuel/air, so they weren't that old. No metal fillings or anything around the gearbox screw...

so yeah, all-in-all, happy with the no sludge, etc. Prob just do a change at the next 5,000km.

I've heard exactly the same thing about Slick 50, and we all know that stuff is horse shit.

That said, Nulon seem pretty respectable and I'd buy their stuff over several other brands. Used their oil flush on the Pulsar with no ill-effects. Used their lifter-free on the R31 and it changed the engine note for a while, but maybe that was because it had cleaned a bunch of varnish and crap out of it. AFAIK that engine's still running strong and it's now on its 3rd lead-foot owner ;)

I've taken off my cam cover on my car. Engine's got about 60 000ks on it (genuine). It's pretty clean.

I've also taken the cam cover off on my subaru wagon (daily driver). about 160 000ks, hardly serviced, always ran on shit oil (when mum used to own it). It is also clean under the suprisingly. Everything is just a bit more brown. But there isn't really any 'sludge' to be seen anywhere.

I'm not making any conclussions - just sharing my observation.

    • Hi, is the HKS  Tower Bar still available ? negotiable ? 🤔
    • From there, it is really just test and assemble. Plug the adapter cables from the unit into the back of the screen, then the other side to the car harness. Don't forget all the other plugs too! Run the cables behind the unit and screw it back into place (4 screws) and you should now have 3 cables to run from the top screen to the android unit. I ran them along the DS of the other AV units in the gap between their backets and the console, and used some corrugated tubing on the sharp edges of the bracket so the wires were safe. Plug the centre console and lower screen in temporarily and turn the car to ACC, the AV should fire up as normal. Hold the back button for 3 sec and Android should appear on the top screen. You need to set the input to Aux for audio (more on that later). I put the unit under the AC duct in the centre console, with the wifi antenna on top of the AC duct near the shifter, the bluetooth antenna on the AC duct under the centre console The GPS unit on top of the DS to AC duct; they all seem to work OK there are are out of the way. Neat cable routing is a pain. For the drive recorder I mounted it near the rear view mirror and run the cable in the headlining, across the a pillar and then down the inside of the a pillar seal to the DS lower dash. From there it goes across and to one USB input for the unit. The second USB input is attached to the ECUtec OBD dongle and the 3rd goes to the USB bulkhead connected I added in the centre console. This is how the centre console looks "tidied" up Note I didn't install the provided speaker, didn't use the 2.5mm IPod in line or the piggyback loom for the Ipod or change any DIP switches; they seem to only be required if you need to use the Ipod input rather than the AUX input. That's it, install done, I'll follow up with a separate post on how the unit works, but in summary it retains all factory functions and inputs (so I still use my phone to the car for calls), reverse still works like factory etc.
    • Place the new daughterboard in the case and mount it using the 3 small black rivets provided, and reconnect the 3 factory ribbon cables to the new board Then, use the 3 piggyback cables from the daughterboard into the factory board on top (there are stand offs in the case to keep them apart. and remember to reconnect the antenna and rear cover fan wires. 1 screw to hold the motherboard in place. Before closing the case, make a hole in the sticker covering a hole in the case and run the cable for the android unit into the plug there. The video forgot this step, so did I, so will you probably. Then redo the 4 screws on back, 2 each top and bottom, 3 each side and put the 2 brackets back on.....all ready to go and not that tricky really.
    • Onto the android unit. You need to remove the top screen because there is a daughterboard to put inside the case. Each side vent pops out from clips; start at the bottom and carefully remove upwards (use a trim remover tool to avoid breaking anything). Then the lower screen and controls come out, 4 screws, a couple of clips (including 3 flimsy ones at the top) and 3 plugs on the rear. Then the upper screen, 4 screws and a bunch of plugs and she is out. From there, remove the mounting brackets (2 screws each), 4 screws on the rear, 2 screws top and bottom and 3 screws holding in the small plates on each side. When you remove the back cover (tight fit), watch out for the power cable for the fan, I removed it so I could put the back aside. The mainboard is held in by 1 screw in the middle, 1 aerial at the top and 3 ribbon cables. If you've ever done any laptop stuff the ribbon cables are OK to work with, just pop up the retainer and they slide out. If you are not familiar just grab a 12 year old from an iphone factory, they will know how it works The case should now look like this:
    • Switching the console was tricky. First there were 6 screws to remove, and also the little adapter loom and its screws had to come out. Also don't forget to remove the 2 screws holding the central locking receiver. Then there are 4 clips on either side....these were very tight in this case and needed careful persuading with a long flat screw driver....some force required but not enough to break them...this was probably the fiddliest part of the whole job. In my case I needed both the wiring loom and the central locking receiver module to swap across to the new one. That was it for the console, so "assembly is the reverse of disassembly"
