Rotary Times

I don't know about the fastest one, but the general advantage of a rotary is that it has "rotors" instead of pistons. These rotors move in a rotary kind of direction as opposed to a piston which moves up and down. Pistons accelerate then stop dead then accelerate again and stop dead again etc etc. At the top and bottom of each stroke the piston comes to a complete stop. Rotaries do away with this loss of momentum.

Better drag cars not. If they could make torque like they revved they would own it but unless they are in a lightweight sardine can they are faaarked.

And while we are on the subject, Why is it that every rotary I ever see has either just been rebuilt or needs rebuilding. :D

I know there are rotaries in Australia that run in the 7's over the quarter mile (from engines making 1000+ hp), so the fastest would probably run high sixes maybe? Advantage of Rotaries is they're physically smaller and lighter, with fewer moving parts, and generally make more power, than a piston engine of equivalent displacement.

I wouldn't, however, suggest that rotaries are more suited to drag racing than piston engines. The fastest piston engined quarter miles are in the sub-4.5 second range (from engines making 8000+hp). Piston engines have had more development over history and are therefore more suited than rotaries for most applications, whether it be drift, drag, economy, towing, etc. There's simply more time, more money and more experience being put into piston engine development than rotary engine development. A rotary will never be the most economical, most powerful, or most reliable choice for an engine. When rotaries have more than one manufacturer doing the development, maybe we'll see increased competitiveness.

When it comes down to it, people like rotary engines because they're DIFFERENT, not because they're the ideal engine choice.

There are Normally aspirated tintops in the states running six's. Last time I looked anderson was running as low as 6.7's at just over 200 mph on tunnel rammed holleys. The factory hotrods (prostockers) arent that light either. The donk and lenco tranny alone would weigh what some of the wankel powered cars weigh.

I believe Abel Ibara's rx8 is the fastest rotary in the world having run 6.794 @ 209.94 mph

Aussies are 6.967 @ 199.17 mph, that's the pac mx6.

But that doesn't mean anything because their's 2jz powered monsters running 6.6's in the states and even in aus the 2jzgte Camry has run a 6.889 @ 203.62.

To be honest, I wouldn't say rotaries are better or worse than piston motors because you have to compare so many things. I'd rate a 13bt equal to an sr20det and the 20bt would be the equivalent of a 1jz.

Rotaries make plenty of torque when you add a little boost to them, little known fact, when the 20b turbo cosmo was released, it was the torqiest motor ever released in japan, the car wasn't lightweight either and it still managed to have decent performance.

i'm prety sure your wrong, the americans broke 6's a while ago and still hold the record at around 6.7, but i think that car was moving between USA and AUS or they built a similar one or something.

oh and Rocco's RX7 was running high 8's with a rotor, he then f*cked it off for a 2jz, hes reset his personal best almost straight away i believe (8.5 last time i checked), and the motor was a stock non turbo bottome end, with a big ass turbo and methanol! god i love toyota.... :laugh:

P.S.

minor correction in regards to rotarys and piston engine design.

rotaries dont actually continually rotate, well some of it does aka the main shaft but then the crank always spins in a piston engine. rotary engines actually have a stop/start action also they just take less time between hits and essentially have 1 phase firing in 3 phases all the time on a single rotor unless twin or triple in which case more phases closer together, very similar to piston engines.

Older rotaries required MORE rebuilding then newer rotaries "so i have heard" but i know stuff all about newer rotaries even though I would love a series 6+ turbo rx7..... buit

wouldnt trade a 400r for one but meh..>!!

im not quite sure why everyone keeps saying they're so unreliable...there are 2 guys at my works with a rx3 and rx4 and both claim its been about 160000ks without a rebuild now

so that brings me to my next question why have the gtrs not broken 6 secs?

With a bit of thought, you'll notice that none of the GTRs are tube framed or tubbed - and are 4WD.... they have more weight, more drivetrain loss, and less tire on the track. Heat Treatments (fastest GTR in the world with a 7.57) have a tube frame drag chassis in the build which will weigh heaps less, have way more traction and generally be a better base for going outright fast. The running gear from the GTR will be going in that..

i think thats kind of the point, they've done 'only' 160k and its something to mention as an achivement :D alot of it depends on how you treat it to, personally, if i had a rotor, i'd just have to hit 10,00rpm.... daily. if i had a rotor, it would never last as long as the ones youve mentioned

too many variables with drag cars.

if u look at the pro rwd category in sport compact racing worldwide, pistons r the clear leader with titan running 6.41@220 in their 2J scion, theyre just making too much power for any rotary engine to catch.

at the end of the day, nothing beats v8 twin turbo :D no1s yet to catch MRMAD in australia :laugh: and thats only a 3/4 chassis car!

I would dream of a triple rotor 20B ,with a turbo larger than life mounted on my push bike.

This will more than likely produce a 5second quarter mile time if I could hold on to the handle bar. :D

This is why they are so fast..1).Able to spool up at low revs(Due to their triangular design,exhaust waste-gate) and 2)get really high revs. due to engine balance....they are pure and have no faults.(Just workshops that charge like a wounded bull)

Fuel consumption however is high

Why do you want to know...these cars are not cars(Like my push bike)....they are show pieces,promoting workshops and crazy people.

Give us something really nice...to discuss..like.....Who's car can run 10's flat...and do they use it everyday?
