Hi guys,

Just wondering whether a secondhand T3 VL turbo for $500 is worth the upgrade on my R33 GTST Series 2? As its supposed to bolt straight on, since R33's have T3 flanges but T28 turbos...

Anyone know any stats on these turbos? Is it a worthwhile mod to get more hp than stock turbo?

cheers

I would think the RB25 Turbo would be a better bet over a vg30 turbo due to the newer tech and better efficiency.

?!?

I noticed with the VG30BB it wasn't really that much better but around 1000rpm laggier compared to the standard RB20DET Terd. Overall it was slower on the road and still dropped boost.

Apparently the R33 & R34 turbo's don't drop boost.

Thats roughly the same as a RB25DET Turbo though.

Even if it were to make 300kw the RB25DET will spool earlier and make around the same power.

It may end up being slower with a RB30ET Turbo compared to the RB25DET turbo making similiar power due to the vl turbo being laggier.

im not too sure about 300rwkw with a stndrd t3.

i have around 215rwkw , still using the t3 though it has been hifloe'd , not using t4 internals but.

i think with tuning capabilities of a skyline compared to the vl , the t3 would go nicely on it.

matched with correct exhaust and cooler blah blah blah.

with a hiflo t3 ur garaunteed to make more power.

they are oil and water cooler , steel wheels but not bb.

How are they lag wise?

A standard RB25DET Turbo will make 210rwkw on a RB25DET.

I wouldn't really bother with the VL as it will probably lag a little more than the standard unit and on the street it will be slower.

OVL-747 origionally 382 GZV - 4 Door R33 said 300kw which is at the flywheel then slip sliped in the rwkw which is around 400kw at the flywheel.

T3 will get you around the 200-220 rwkw mark in a hi-flowed form. And they are NOT ceramic stock.

They run out of efficiency though thats why people hi-flow them and it works realy well.

anymore than that and that's where you get the much loved t3/4 combo's and they produce some serious power.

good for 11-10 sec passes.

There are a million different combo's with housings/wheels that people have played with.

lag wise tough... i've got a t04E and i get FULL boost at 4500 but it makes boost from 3500 (yes mega lag) but that's totally unmodified. Also to mention i got the 'R' extractors

It would suit a 3ltr perfect but i'm gonna play with bits eventually to get it to around 4000-4200.

depending on price... And if you exisiting one is a little tired and you get a blown T3 and the Hi-flow it (which basically makes it liek new)

You live in Altona... so there will be LOTS of blown/new ones and very cheap LOL

Dunno how they go holding boost till 7000rpm though as VL's don't rev that high... but then the produce more exhaust... ?!?!?!

But definately get a good boost controller. I had a Calais Trubo a while back. It had a t3 hi-flo. Went like the stink :)

It kept spiking all the time thoguh as it just had a bleed valve so it was all over the place and boost didn't hold properly.

With a good one there would be nice results.

But maybe hi-flo your exisiting one ?

I seeing a few do that now... few threads about it now too lately.

Basically BATMBL the T3 from a VL isn't an upgrade.

Make 200+rwkw on the standard turbo first then upgrade to a larger turbo after then. The T3 from a VL is older technology hence it wont be as efficient at your desired boost levels and it will make boost later.

For example:

The VG30BB Turbo, it has a larger exhaust housing however it has a smaller compressor than the RB25DET Turbo. It also drops boost where as the RB25DET Item doesn't.

It isn't an upgrade.. Save your money and spend the $500 towards engine management.

joel - lag wise it is very good , well on my car at least.

putting it on a smaller capacity engine then yeah id say itd increase lag a bit.

what size ex housings are on the 25det?

as you said save his cash and put it towards engine management , thatll get him more hp too , so either way he is a winner

    • Seat of the pants assessment of the new intake: The car is way less "doughy" when hitting the loud pedal, especially off idle when stopped or in traffic, I did use a cheapo lazer thermal thingo to measure the temp around where the pod filter got its air, it was between 55 - 60°C, in saying this the car was shut off and not moving, so the OEM intake pipe was not supplying any fresh air to where the pod was when the car was at least moving A weird bonus was induction noise on the throttle in the cabin increased a bit,  I was worried that I was actually going to lose some of that induction noise I love so much, outside though, when I got the daughter to do a WOT drive by pass for me, the induction noise has increased alot when on the throttle, not quite ITB doort, but well up there I'm extremely happy with the results and have been exploring the country roads in the region  As for house mods: 1.New front fence is up and is awesome, it really upgraded how the joint looks from the street, and the added security is nice 2. Electricians have replace some interior lights, and with more lighting in the garage, a few new motion detecting lights out the front above the garage, front room, and at the front door, which I have already found heaps helpful coming and going, also now has fancy pants CCTV all round the house The only hold point for power though is the solar and batteries due to supply issues, although this will happen over the next few weeks 3. I have done a heap of landscaping out the front and I'm almost ready to do a new small retaining wall with some nice blocks to replace the brick and cemented in rocks around the raised garden beds cemented in river stone "was the fashion at the time" the house was built. I currently have a pallet of retaining wall blocks and 2 bulka bags of 20mm blue metal to replace the wood chip that is in the raised garden beds around the house 4. I now have 3 big raised garden beds for out the back to grow some vegetables, about 70cm high, 200cm long and 100cm wide 5. My 2 compost bins are already pretty full with brown, green and kitchen waste from the landscaping I'vedone so far, but they will probably take a few months to break down, so anything else that gets chopped, trimmed, and kitchen waste will just start filling the base of the raised garden beds to about 30cm before I start throwing 40cm of good compost, and stuff, for the vegetables to grow in, I'll need a few ton of compost and soil, but the local supplier can sent me bulka bags of the stuff Basically the logs, wood chips and a few strategically placed rocks for drainage, will give the beds some good organic materials down low to break down over time, and they will hold moisture during the warmer months to save the water in my big arse water tank if we don't get alot of rain So, all in all, the car and house mods are going well, and I'm really enjoying being retired, I sleep in too 0700 and slowly plod around inside until I feel like actually doing anything, and only work in the yard for as long as want, which has actually been alot over the last few weeks,  although when you look at it, it seems that not a huge amount of work has been done,  until I look at the before I started the work pics Happy days and good times indeed
    • hahaha yeah. Plan is to get side skirts and probably just rear pods. But going to do them one-by-one. I've got a set that I really like from RHDJapen, but that one isn't shipped to AU. So need to find someone who can get it for me
